Medium cranberry color. Cranberry on the nose. Unexpectedly sweet with wild strawberry notes. A little funk in the sweetish finish.

Plum and sweet to start. Tobacco and spice are in there as well. This is a reminder that I don’t love most syrahs, and is not a reflection on quality as my dad was quite taken with this one.

2022 Margerum Cinsault Margerum Estate Vineyards

I like cinsault and have yet to taste a bad example.

This wine reminds me of grenache due to its glycerin-rich red fruit. It’s very floral, and it has some murky, earthy complexity too. I know I have outlier tastes, but I would prefer this wine to be leaner (juicier, less glycerin-rich), so it doesn’t score that highly for me.

Pale light straw in color. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of grapefruit, lemons/limes & stone fruits with overtones of floral notes of honeysuckle, minerals, wet stones & a hint of lemongrass. Light bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, zesty, ripe fruit flavors of lemons/limes, green apple & stone fruits with stony & a streak of minerals. Lingering crisp finish. Drinks quite well at present but appears to benefit from an additional year of further aging. A blend of 54% Grenache Blanc, 21% Viognier, 14% Marsanne, 8% Roussanne and 3% Vermentino (aka Rolle). IMHO, there's no possible way for this wine to objectively rate a mere "83" unless it was an off bottle.

The nose is Chateauneuf du Pape. The palate is similar with good acidity and tannins. Give it air. Fruit and spice emerge. Plenty of life left. 10+ years. On a path to something special.

Checking in on bottle 1 of 2. Bacon/jerky aromas, fresh herbs, tobacco, as before. A little tight, though yielded well to decanting. A mid-weight, elegant wine despite labelled 14.8% ABV, silky, round texture with pure concentrated blackberry flavors. Oak is well integrated/non obvious. Fine tannins on the finish, good grip. Alcohol shows on the nose from time to time, though far from dominant.

Hold next bottle for 4-8 years. Still young, though accessible. If this builds tertiary complexity, will be excellent.

Dark reddish-purple in color. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & mulberries with overtones of floral notes of lavender, spices, pepper, earthy/dusty notes, minerals, herbs, mocha/cocoa & a hint of oak/vanilla notes in the background. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, raspberries & pomegranates with herbs, spices, minerals, mocha & a hint of oak/vanilla. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well with decanting & extended airing at present but should develop further with additional aging. A blend of 39% Grenache, 32% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, 7% Counoise & 7% Cinsault. A wonderful & versatile red blend; perfect for BBQs.

I Love It When Things Make Sense

With all the unique, and sometimes strange, ways that wineries make up names for their wines it’s refreshing to find one that is just plain old straightforward. Over the years, I have encountered names that I have yet to decipher. Frustrating to be sure, but nothing I’m going to lose sleep over. Today’s wine is that breathe of fresh air when it comes to names:

Margerum "M5" Santa Barbara County Rhône Blend 2021

Let’s dissect the “M5” designation. No surprise that the “M” refers to the winery name “Margerum.” While the “5” could be some acronym or hidden reference, it merely applied to the fact that they use 5 different grapes in the wine; 44% Grenache, 31% Syrah, 14% Mourvèdre, 6% Counoise, and 5% Cinsault. Easy peasy.

Selecting this wine was also a no-brainer. As number 17 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 for this year, they, along with an additional reviewer awarded this wine a 94-point review.

It’s easy to be a fan of Margerum, they specialize in Rhône blends (love ‘em), and source from a variety of regions within the Santa Barbara region; specifically from this wine, 40% Los Olivos District, 32% Santa Ynez Valley, 26% Sta. Rita Hills, 2% Happy Canyon. Each varietal is separately fermented and matured for 10 months in seasoned and neutral French oak barrels before the final blend.

The wine that ultimately emerged was vibrant with raspberry and other red fruit, and although slightly lighter than I had anticipated, it was still enjoyable, especially with the nice acidity and savory elements that the wine brought forth.

I’ve sampled a few of Margerum’s wines and have yet to be disappointed. So much so, I just bought their new “Sybarite” Sauvignon Blanc for 2022. Can’t wait to try it!

Cheers
