2018 Brookland Valley Chardonnay Reserve

Margaret River more

4/7/2024 - cogo44 Likes this wine: NR

Lovely bright golden colour in the glass. The nose is an appealing amalgam of peaches and cream and nougat. Barrel fermentation is very evident in the mix. The palate has a creamy texture backed with enough acid to carry the fruit weight to the back palate. A very food friendly chardonnay that exemplifies the Margaret River in spades.

Fully developed in the bottle. Great colour and delicious buttery feel on the pallette. Just Devine.
A great classic Chardonnay

Plum with some vanilla and mulberry on the nose. Medium mouthfeel with balance leaning toward spice on the palate, while mulberry and blackcurrant come through nicely. Well integrated tannins follow mid-way into the finish. Paired with beef brisket, roasted potatoes and carrots.

Somewhat closed nose displaying plum, licorice and mulberry after half an hour. Palate of cassis and mulberry forward, with some cedar and indistinguishable herbs. Thin to medium mouthfeel over a fine tannic backbone. Medium length finish with a touch of heat at the end. Paired nicely with spaghetti Bolognese.

A fine wine. Herbal notes are to the fore with blackberry and fine dusty tannin that becomes fully integrated the next day. The first day the mid palate was a little empty, but become a fully formed wine the next day with exemplary length. This is a wine that will improve with age, not touching another for at least 5 years.

Black and red currants, black olive. Menthol and eucalyptus... a tad too much. Milk chocolate. Ample fine scaffolding and length. This is in an in between state, but I do not know if it will resolve to something greater or lesser... certainly has lost the dark intensity of youth, and right now is a little too sweet and minty. Tbh the score is giving the benefit of the doubt to where this is headed.

Blackberry, cassis, a little dusty tannin. Juicy. Very drinkable and I like the flavour profile, though it only offers a feint echo of MR regionality and is simple and shortish.
5 days past the 11th anniversary of my first note on cellartracker, which also happened to be for a humble verse 1, albeit a rose.

Nov2020. Wine was very drinkable but nothing special. Tannins a little dominating and fruit disappears quickly.

Day 2 and 3 the wine has integrated nicely.

Pristine medium dark red with purple hues in the right light.

Still a very subdued nose. Some wet cement, maybe a touch of rosemary. Violet. Some oak, and creamy black cherry.

Medium bodied (great to see for a ‘reserve’ wine) with low but new oak provides a touch of slide through entry. Black and dark red fruits.

Through the middle is where it keeps it’s lovely, flowing and direct shape and line, and brings on more vegetal notes of black olive, fresh herb and salt and pepper spice mix.

Grainy tannins maintain momentum without void from the middle third, clip of very classy new oak in support, and chewy and savoury black olive and nori carry long with a menthol infused length.

4.25+ out of 5 for me (93/4). Lovely carry of flavour, it is elegant. Will likely score higher once the oak lets the medium bodied and pure fruit shine a little more. Nebbiolo drinkers will like this Cabernet, I suspect.

Opened 2017 tonight- I needed a break from whites during this Adelaide heatwave. Has taken four hours in a decanter to start to open up. Score wise it moved around between 92-96pts as different aspects came and went. Young Cabernet always hard to judge. At first a little washed out by creamy oak, length and tannin hidden behind good wood. Once it found its legs a lovely and persistent medium weight, clearly WA Cabernet with all its bay tree, black Olive, and salty nori with gravelly and herb garden tannins. 4 to 4.5 out of 5 for me. Could go higher tomorrow. It’s a couple of points ahead of the 17 Cullen Cab Merlot recently tried, more body and muscular tannins but still shows the more ‘classic’ cooler vintage well.

An overwhelming amount of fruit in nose as well as in mouth. All the black berries present. And then spices like pepper and thyme. Leather, wood, olive and liquorice. Medium acidity but very little tannin present. A somewhat boring drink because it is a fruit drink with added alcohol. However it does no harm.

Lovely balance of fruit, acidity and oak. Looking forward to seeing how this ages. Possibly a touch on the oaky side for my personal preference, but it is beautifully balanced. Great value for money too.

This was a beautiful wine. The Cab Sav was very dominant but it had a beautiful smooth finish and lovely woody smokey characteristics typical of great WA Cab Sav.

I was a bit harsh in scoring this previously. Descriptors as before. Mulberries, currants, bay leaf, savoury elements, dusty tannin. To which I’d add, pleasing pucker of tannin and ample length. First Friday night for many weeks where the temp has been less than 30 degrees, and I’ve been looking forward to a glass of red.

Much better wine than the previous bottle. Good balance and length. Given how much each bottle is varying in quality, I assume this wine is nearing the end of its life.

If you crack a LEAS or a Vat 47 too often they lose their sense of occasion. So I've been testing a few sub $50 Chardonnays recently. My thirst for knowledge knows no bounds.

This was very impressive. Generous style for a 17. Proper Chardonnay from a rock solid producer and from the best region in Australia for the variety.

CellarOne has it at hugely discounted prices. Load up.

This is an ok wine, but it lacks a definitive edge. I drank this in one day (ok with friends - not on my own). The previous bottle was better on day 2, but you don't want a (white) wine to need multiple days. I think this is a year or 2 past its best. It is just flat.
