Some wines with Jeff Chilcott: A gift from the winery. Our contribution to the dinner. Excellent potential with this wine. A little reduced on both bouquet and palate. Fresh and very intense aromas of dark cherries and blackberries, liquorice and lifted dark florals. Also a suggestion of citrus juice I sometimes see on Baroli. On palate, as well as the reduction, the wine was a little primary and closed, although it did open somewhat with time in the glass. Vibrant and crystalline red fruit flavours. Elegant, refined and well balanced. I'd give this wine 10+ years cellar time and a lot of oxygen if I did open it earlier.

even at 15 years old the wine still needed time to open up. when it did it was a wonderful, deep wine.
The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like light toast and mushroom.

This got a 4hr decant prior to consumption and really needed it. Not until hr 6-8 was it really showing well as it was quite shut down upon opening. Eventually showed a nice floral nose of dried red berries and menthol. Palate was fine, quite acidic and bright with some moderate tannins on the back end only. Without food this came across as rather austere and a little thin, but which food seemingly had tremendous depth and complexity. Lengthy pipe tobacco finish. Certainly not one to sip on it's own, and seemingly still very young.

Good nose with still fresh fruit showing. Still very tannic with acidity on the finish. Will the tannin ever subside? Not sure of the fruit with more bottle age. Very good but will it be better?

Tasted blind. Terrific nose of roses, hint of bacon and sour cherries. Beautfully balanced on the palate, with very fine tannins and acidity, but a also a lovely concentration of juicy red fruit. Really a textbook Barolo with traditional winemaking.

Decanted for 30 minutes. Menthol and rose petal on the nose. On the palate, black cherry, rose petal, tar, and earthy notes, with drying tannins that fade over the course of two hours and beautifully balanced acidity. This is at or near its peak, although the tannins will carry it for at least three or four more years, and it may continue to evolve and improve even after that. Beautiful wine, and for less than $50 it was a bargain. I wish I had more.

Fabulous Barbera. Rich and flavorful with a nice acidic spine. Very good with roasted cauliflower in a tomato/anchovy sauce.

What a wine. Opened for my birthday. Extremely intense and complex. Yes, there is brett, yes there is VA, yes a little madereised, yes some residual sugar?!? - but somehow it all works together. Wow.

En riktigt trevlig kväll med 21 vingårdsspecifika Barolos alla från årgång 2004. Väldigt lärorikt med klar skillnad mellan kommuner och lägen.
En Barolo i den kraftigare stilen med gott om mörk mogen frukt, tjära, mint, balsamico, och viss kryddighet. Behöver mer tid.

We popped 21 bottles of Cru Barolo - 2004 tonight, in order to really dig into the real details of the communes, with this horizontal tasting.
Nose with deep, dark fruit, black cherries, licorice, tar and quite a blast of mint/menthol and spicy green herbs present.
Palate shows sweet ripe dark ripe and fat fruit, touch of sour red berries, fine tannins and good length.
Still feels on the younger side.

Closed at first but with satin pure fruit, sweetness to the tannins and good acidity. After 2-3 hours it put on weight but retained its delicious fruit and balance.

Traditional style. Monumental structure. Complex. Aromas and flavor changing, as someone in search of his place. I think it is a little closed mouth. A few more years of aging will not hurt it

I first got into Cavallotto when the 2001s were out, along with the 1999 Riservas, and remember being struck by the pure, sweet fruit of the Bricco Boschis and the many layers and refined tannins of the San Giuseppe - this vintage of the BB is somewhere in between those in personality, drier and more structured and not as vibrant or fresh in the fruit department as it can sometimes be, but those tannins are seriously luxe with cashmere refinement. It is still Barolo, though, so you're going to be puckering after a glass or so. The leftovers still taste the same a week later.

In the past they would do Bricco Boschics which for some legal reason they can’t do now. Big rich and rasinated, and I think has been open a while. Cavalotto thinks it’s in an akward moment, and in a nother year it will be even better. John and Bonnie love it.

Bonny and Karl like, Calvalotto notes that it needs one more year. Erin says ’13 is a great vintage for Dolcetto – this year is lighter, more fruit and less alcohol. Very fresh. Their style is dolcetto to drink three to four years in the bottle, or more. For them, Dolcetto is not a cheaper wine. It is the same quality as the Barolos. “Because I have to spend many hours in the vineyard.”

Vigna Scot is a very very old name, probably coming from the first owner. Which Calvallotto says exists and has been documented.
