Gift from my cousin. He has much better wines...
Well...third-rate producer, 27 years old wine, but 1996 was an extraordinary vintage. Still tannic, youthful or slow to mature. 96 points according to the WA Vintage Guide. Slow to mature... perhaps those from the top. Let's see.
20 minutes in the decanter.
Smell - a lot of earth, leather, black tea ( well, well, well), herbs.
Taste? First of all - watery texture(no good), no tannins, visible acidity from the beginning to the end, but what else is here...
Believe it or not, but sweet fruits are still alive.
Red cherry, black cherry, plum and lot of black coffee
Short finish, but highly drinkable and it beats most supermarket wines.
Nice surprise.
Third glass and... texture is thicker, tannins show up and they are grainy, finish is much longer with red fruits, black chocolate and black pepper.

Gang of 4 in Covid19 times; Bordeaux, St. Estephe (@ RW): In the bouquet dark and red berries and vanilla and just after uncorking not very expressive, With more air time the wine really improved in the bouquet as well as on the palate. In the mouth the wine showed red and dark berries, cigars, smoke, oak, a firm amount of acidity and still sticky tannin. No hurry at all with this wine. It will still be a beauty in 2025.

Wonderful "old style" classic St Estephe, but quite similar to 90' Batailley. Coffee, violet, cedar, wild blueberry, tobacco, vanilla, silky, touch of prune...but in no way dominant. We really loved it! Nearly p&p, only 30 with Cork out before first glass...drank well for 2 hours 🤗,

Dag 1: Lav fylning, delt kork.

Cassis, old wood and a hint of bacon on the nose. Palate with strong tertiary character, dark berries still there but receding, leather, tobacco. Aged gracefully, good QPR.

Very nice showing. Best on day 2. Initially had a great deal of olive and brine that blew off to reveal a rather pretty left bank red with cassis and old library. Still fruit and plenty of tertiary development. Nice wine, and a sound bottle through Winebid

Late Apr 2020, tasting of six different Bordeaux red wines (1996 Marbuzet, 2016 Ormes de Pez, 2009 Haut Madrac, 2009 Bourgneuf, 2012 Phelan Segur, Lagrange 2012) all in 0.375 L bottles.

Chateau Marbuzet 1996, 0.375 L bottle, late Apr 2020: not decanted; crimson brown color; immediately open bouquet of cassis, chocolate, coffee and bread-like aromas; soft on the palate together with a mature acidity; a slight strange off-flavor however, prevented an excellent rating. 87-88/100

My last Marbuzet 1996 bottle (out of a 24 pieces 0.375 L bottle case purchased many years ago) offered a final very good showing. So it‘s time to say goodbye to this wine which accompanied my life the last two decades.

Still youthful and firm, meaty flavours, cedar and wood tones, inky, can be consumed now but preferably with food, will get better with age.

The former 2nd wine of Cos d'Estournel, now vinified completely separately from the fruit outside the Cos vineyards, whereas the lesser fruit and fruit from the younger vines are used in making Les Pagodes de Cos.

Slightly translucent cherry red color with subtle, developed brick orange hue. The nose feels pretty savory, somewhat developed and pretty attractive with some umami meaty character and notes of roasted bell pepper, some slightly wizened blackcurrants, light inky notes, a hint of ripe plums and a touch of cedar. A classic and harmonious claret nose. The wine feels moderately full-bodied, quite dense and even pretty robust on the palate with chewy yet juicy texture and quite intense, vibrant flavors of blackcurrant-driven dark fruits, peppery spice, some developed umami-driven beef jerky character, a little bit of meat stock and a hint of tart dark berries or sour plums. The wine is still quite structured and even somewhat tightly-knit with its moderately high acidity and quite ample and firm tannins. Overall the wine comes across as slightly developed and nicely pure-fruited, i.e. there is very little to none obvious oak character - all the wood tones have nicely integrated with the fruit. The finish is long, savory and moderately grippy with good, bright acidity and vibrant flavors of slightly wizened blackcurrants, some leafy greenness, a little bit of peppery spice and a hint of tobacco.

This is a wonderfully developed, still quite stern and tightly-knit and pretty fruit-forward Claret that is starting to show some aged character, but which is ripe enough to keep the intense dark-fruited flavors on top of the firm structure. The wine is starting to get resolved enough so that it can be enjoyed on its own, but overall the wine is still so lively and structured that I'd pair it with something hearty enough. An impressive and balanced effort that still has some way to go before hitting its peak. Will keep for a long time. Superb value at only 32,50€.

13.5% alcohol. The very good long dense cork is penetrated no more than a mm. Decanted an hour ahead.
Deep colour with no sign of evolution. The nose is pleasant, if not very expansive, with black berries and some kirsch. The mouth starts well enough, with very ripe dark fruit flavours, but from the mid palate onwards this is overtaken by perceived alcohol. This results in a major imbalance. Things calm down a bit with time in the glass (or is it that my palate becomes numb?), but the wine never achieves anything approaching harmony. On the positive side, the oak is well integrated, and there is no sign of impending oxidation (unlike its quasi name sake H-M of the same vintage).
I will give this a fighting chance of improvement with another few years in bottle, but there are so many better St Estèphe wines in this vintage.

Medium ruby color, with slight tinges of browning. Still time left in the bottle, but drinking well now with 1.5 hours of decanting. Alcohol nose blows off quickly. Nose of dark cherry. Pure Bordeaux. Dusky, earthy undertones/underbelly. Medium finish.
