Soft, faded nose of fuel, rotten wood, raisin, and red fruit. Mild flavours of dark chocolate, raisin, and prune. Palate shows moderate sweetness (slightly sticky) balanced by soft tannin, bright acidity, and clean spirit. The mouthfeel is beautifully balanced, but the flavour is quite faded and just starting to decay. Lovely, but needs to be drunk soon. |

Medium plus intensity acidity and alcohol help with the impression of juiciness but this is lusciously sweet, a little coffee joins the figs and dried figs, walnuts and baked sugar notes. A little simple and lightweight fruit wise but this is balanced and perfectly pleasant. |

1/22/2022 - graemeg wrote: NR{500ml, screwcap, 18.5%} Crude caramel aromas. Burnt ones, really. I really can’t find much else here. Simple. Palate is a little better structurally, with a nice balance of acid and warmth. Caramel, honey, some cold tea. It’s perhaps a little raw but it does build your confidence in 10- and 15- year old versions from McWilliams, even if it’s not all that endearing itself. Medium weight, patchily uneven but nicely warm finish of medium length. So-so. |

12/10/2021 - Bsmith457 Likes this wine: 96 pointsDense black colour but with a relatively clean dark crimson hue. Spicy aroma, blackberry, pepper, dry oak, dark berries. No sign of its age. Smooth, chocolatety smooth. Plum, almost stewed, dry powdery tannin. Balanced acidity, not flabby. A well preserved wine. Drinking fresh and complex. Still has at least 5 years ahead. |

12/8/2021 - graemeg wrote: NRNobleRottersSydney - a fine finale (Fix, St James, Sydney): {cork, 19%} [Gordon] Double-decanted four hours earlier off significant sediment. Smells like an antique shop, with old timber rafters, carpet, camphor, treacly sweetness. The palate is a fair stab at proper vintage port (even if the label said it’s made from cabernet sauvignon!), with fumey flavours, old barrels, caramel and dust. I suppose it’s medium-dry for sweetness but the finish is dryly refreshing. Long, lingering finish that avoids too much heat. Pretty damn good for 40+ years. |

7/20/2021 - graemeg wrote: NR{screwcap, 13%} Pale yellow. Discreet nose, a bit buttery and malo-driven. Not especially oaky though. Surprisingly dilute palate (esp in light of all the medal bling decorating the bottle - I was expecting a show monster). Grated nuts, hint of grapefruit, even a touch of something richer. Rockmelon maybe? Low/medium acidity, about medium weight. There is oak, and it’s flavourful, but polished and discreet. Still the finish fades rather too quickly to mark this as worthy of all its acclaim, for me at least. Will keep a while easily; it seems hardly developed really. But, where will it go? The 842 in the name refers to the vineyard altitude apparently. |
