Great mid-palate and long finish. Merryvale's sweet spot is definitely their higher-end cabs and Profile, their meritage. |

10/15/2008 - sleepyhaus wrote: 88 pointsThe last bottle was better, with more assertive fruit. The best that could be said here is that this was pleasant enough to drink, if a bit simple. At its best there was a vague whiff of licorice. At the worst there is a green edge as well. Still smooth, no tannin. |

10/15/2008 - BillB656 wrote: NRJammy black currant. Just typing this phrase makes me want to run for the dump bucket and is only surpassed in negative reaction by "chocolate covered cherry cola" or "Argentinian malbec". That said, this wine will have its fans. The fruit is very deep and sweet, lots of glycerin, and the tannins have integrated quite nicely. I just can't get past the aroma. |

WOW, this is still in its prime. Well balanced with fruit, structure and finish, this is a big wine. I am constantly amazed at how many well made '98's are drinking GREAT now. I am glad I still have a half case remaining. |

9/27/2008 - Rob MacKay wrote: 85 pointsA nice chardonnay with just a slight bit of age on it. Nose is pure toasted oak and burnt popcorn with a very buttery mouthfeel and texture. I can definitely see how this would be a love it or hate it wine for some people, but if you like this style of Chadonnay, you will like this wine. However, if you are not a fan of buttery popcorny Chardonnay, then look somewhere else. |

Blackcherry and currant fruit up front, some dark chocolate on the back end, but honestly, not much of a midpalate. Low acid. Shows some grip on the end, with lingering tannins. |

9/17/2008 - boxwine_in_hell wrote: 92 pointsGreat Cabernet. Merryvale is a very underappreciated winery in my opinion. They do great stuff. Bouquet of clover, anise, blackberry and strawberry and a bit of hay. The palate is a great sweet cedar, plum, blackberry and interesting orange zest flavors in the finish. Tannins are strong but yielding nicely. This wine still puckers you a bit. Good structure and should continue to mature nicely but very tempting at the moment. |
