At its prime, blew away the other wines we enjoyed. Great nose, smooth, fruit and tannins balanced. A great wine, not before its time.

Very nice bottle overall. After an extended decanting, really came through with lots of earthy texture, well balanced alcohol and nice long finish. Might have had more fruit if opened a year earlier.

Expected much more based on 93 pt WS rating and previous posts here. Janet & I found this to be "very one demensional". Little or no staying power on finish. With price of $80.00 we were let down. Stored 55* for four years.

Classic Napa Cab, from an excellent '02 vintage. Drinking nicely right now. Loads of cassis, tar, pencil lead, with excellent tannic structure. Well-balanced. Great mid-palate and long finish. Merryvale's sweet spot is definitely their higher-end cabs and Profile, their meritage.

This wine is drinking wonderfully right now. Classic Beckstoffer fruit - intense layers of dark cherry, cocoa, cedar wrapped with oak. Medium grained tannins with a long finish.

The last bottle was better, with more assertive fruit. The best that could be said here is that this was pleasant enough to drink, if a bit simple. At its best there was a vague whiff of licorice. At the worst there is a green edge as well. Still smooth, no tannin.
This is a lot better than other wines I have rated at 88 probably, but for a Napa cab it is an 88 at best I think. Ah, the problems of numerical rating.
Anyway, not bad if it can be gotten super cheap, otherwise pass.

Jammy black currant. Just typing this phrase makes me want to run for the dump bucket and is only surpassed in negative reaction by "chocolate covered cherry cola" or "Argentinian malbec". That said, this wine will have its fans. The fruit is very deep and sweet, lots of glycerin, and the tannins have integrated quite nicely. I just can't get past the aroma.

Kept too long. Perfectly enjoyable to drink well melded medium tannins but had lost flavor and was one dimensional Should have drunk it a couple of years ago.

Revisiting some excellent '98 and '99 Cabs: It has been two years since I popped a bottle of this Bordeaux blend from Merryvale. WOW, this is still in its prime. Well balanced with fruit, structure and finish, this is a big wine. I am constantly amazed at how many well made '98's are drinking GREAT now. I am glad I still have a half case remaining.

A classic Rutherford Cab with some "dusty" red fruit along with the currant and mocha. Nice balance and length. A bit disappointing for the price.

A nice chardonnay with just a slight bit of age on it. Nose is pure toasted oak and burnt popcorn with a very buttery mouthfeel and texture. I can definitely see how this would be a love it or hate it wine for some people, but if you like this style of Chadonnay, you will like this wine. However, if you are not a fan of buttery popcorny Chardonnay, then look somewhere else.

This is drinking very well right now. I decanted and after opening slightly this wine exhibited all the characteristics of a classic Napa Cab. I got blueberry, blackberry, tar wrapped in a well-balanced framework. Medium tannins. Light oak.

Nicely layered, though far from showy - perhaps even a touch hesitant for such a full wine. Blackcherry and currant fruit up front, some dark chocolate on the back end, but honestly, not much of a midpalate. Low acid. Shows some grip on the end, with lingering tannins.

Great Cabernet. Merryvale is a very underappreciated winery in my opinion. They do great stuff. Bouquet of clover, anise, blackberry and strawberry and a bit of hay. The palate is a great sweet cedar, plum, blackberry and interesting orange zest flavors in the finish. Tannins are strong but yielding nicely. This wine still puckers you a bit. Good structure and should continue to mature nicely but very tempting at the moment.
