(87 jour 1, 90 jour 2)

Still very structured; could easily go another five years. Excellent mouth feel with characteristic punch of a petit syrah. Went great with ribs.

This wine only garnered 90 points on the second day after opening. On the first day, after opening and decanting for a couple hours, the wine was undrinkable. It was disjointed, thin, and a bit acrid. After a couple sips I poured the wine back in the bottle and corked it.

The next day, the wine was all put together and fleshed out. Mouthfeel plumped up and fanned out on the palate. Dark blackberries and stewed fruit flavors and aromas. Nothing incredibly complex but absolutely delicious and a pleasure to drink.

Big wine with very good weight and lengthy finish. Style similar to a chardonnay but more mineral-focused with subtle fruit. Good depth. Really enjoyed this white, a perfect match with our broiled crabcakes. 90-91.

We always enjoy this wine. It has that honeysuckle, floral flavors but with some nice acidity that tastes almost like a sauvignon blanc. We had it with some spicy food and it paired well.

We're down to one more bottle. Definitely a go to white for us.

An hour decant. This blend highlights an elegant-styled syrah with smooth subtle dark fruit, earth, and a nice tongue-coating lasting finish. Wanted a little more complexity, but still very pleasant.

I feel fortunate to have snagged a few bottles of this wine. His Rhone wines are so hard to find and when you do, they are very expensive. For less than $50, this wine is a steal.

Color. Saturated and inky red.

Nose. Blackberries, cherries, sage, blueberries, cocoa nibs, graphite, donut frosting?

Palate. Dense fruit, Spruce syrup, glycerin, dense tannins that aren't huge, crisp acidity, a decent level of alcohol that wears on the palate. Overall it's a huge wine, that's immensely enjoyable.

Cherry red with fading at the edges. Plums and cherries on the nose. Rich and precise on the palate with a bit of harshness. Roast meats, cherry, blackberry. Tannins are a bit harsh. Good acidity and balance. Finishes long and sharp. Still alive but it's seen better days. Drink up.

WTSO and Costco wines while hiking in Arizona (Superstition Mountains and Sedona): Vinturi'd into a decanter and served immediately. This wine was completely uneventful, easy drinking, a bit dull. The scores here make no sense, nor does the $45 price paid and $90 from the winery. Hard pass.

I recently bought this one for $65 from a liquor store that used to be higher end. It was very dusty. I was nervous about it, and the cork mostly disintegrated when I opened it. After I filtered out all the pieces of cork, the wine actually ended up being very good. It still had a lot of red fruit and some dusty tannins. There was just the slightest hint of vinegar on it so I certainly wouldn't wait any longer to open it if you still have some.
It did take a while to open up.. needed about 2 hours of air

Really liked this wine. We opened a bottle trying to figure out if we wanted to get a couple more bottles. This wine is going to get better with some additional time but really enjoyed it with our smoked beef brisket. Opened it and gave it a good three hours to breath. Immediately could smell the black fruit emanating from the wine. There was blackberry, black plum, some raspberry, earthiness like potting soil and possibly some mushroom. The rich deep ruby wine also made it's high alcohol known before even tasting it. There was also a herbal or vegetal tone to it that I can't quite put my finger on. There is definitely some complexity to this wine that keeps coming back to you. The wine was excellent with a lots of body and high alcohol. It really went well with the brisket with a medium finish. Have another bottle and will probably get some more with the intention of storing and drinking in the future.

There was a classic Zin nose and flavor in 1990s Ravenswood Sonoma that I’ve been searching for ever since. This wine has it!

Good concentration, dark garnet. Great balance on structure and acidity. Bramble fruits and pepper. Wish I had more of this.

Finally hitting its stride! Mocha framed Wild berry fruit backed by warm spice. Acid has finally integrated enough to really enjoy the wine, tannins still need to tame. Good now with a lot of runway and will only get better.

California Red Rhone Blend more

The Jeff Cohn Cellars Pure Yum 2018, blending 67% Syrah with 33% Grenache from Sonoma County, showcases a distinctive profile. Aromatically, it is rich with diverse berry notes, including cherry, blueberry, and prominent red berries, intertwined with a subtle vanilla undertone. These aromas suggest a delightful mix of tart and sweet elements, enhanced by a hint of baking spices.

Taste-wise, this wine exhibits a slight acidity balanced by a jammy, smooth texture. Its higher alcohol content at 15.2% adds to its full-bodied nature, lending a somewhat boozy quality. This characteristic is especially noticeable in the warming sensation felt in the back of the nose.

Paired with a meal of chicken braised in red wine sauce and ramp butter, the wine's fruit-forward aspect was accentuated. Its astringency on the nose contributes an additional layer of complexity to the tasting experience.

Final notes: compelling and multi-faceted wine. Its blend of berry flavors, vanilla, and baking spices, combined with a smooth, robust palate, marks it as an appealing choice for those who appreciate a well-rounded, fruit-forward wine.

Had this again with friends. It’s rich and has a Chardonnay quality rich, without much acidity. It has a honeysuckle flavor and tasted sweet to some of the people. It actually paired well with spicy food though not something you wanted to have a lot of by itself.

Tasted after a 75 minute decant. Medium to dark ruby in colour with lovely aromas of forest floor & cured meat transitioning to leather & chocolate.
On the palate, full bodied, juicy & lively black fruit, blackberry/bramble/boysenberry, sweet tobacco, leather, raisin, spices, herbal, medium acidity, medium soft tannins with a long finish to pepper & a butterscotch aftertaste. This wine has aged exceptionally well & the complexity seems to have increased since our last bottle almost two years ago. One of the best Zinfandels we’ve ever tasted!
Still excellent flavour & structure on night #2!

Okay, I need to rejoin Jeff's wine club. This is a beautiful expression of Sonoma County Syrah. It is drinking extremely well right now, right out of the bottle. Big, luscious, great mouthfeel, incredibly well balanced. Even my wife, who is not a fan of the Rhone varietals, loved it. If you got one, now is the time to crack it open.

Rich and deep nose of sweet, dark and red fruit. Savory notes of pepper and dried herbs. Normally I don’t really like Zinfandel because of the jammyness and sweetness that often goes hand in hand with this varietal. This wine however seems more “vinous” and without all the fake candy fruit. Still, I have to say I’m rather disappointed by this wine. Heavily overpriced and overrated. Very powerful and out of balance. The savory notes overshadows the fruit and the alcohol feels like fire in my chest...
