10/16/2016 - wineman73 Likes this wine: 95 pointsThe 1994 Spottswoode was 1 of 3 amazing wines shared with a family friend over a great steak dinner. An epic trio of California cabs, which included 1990 Cosentino and a 1989 Forman. The color was a garnet red with no bricking. The wine had a beautiful nose that expressed cocoa powder, cherry and tobacco. The mouth feel was very smooth and medium weight with small amount of tannins. The taste provided flavors of bittersweet chocolate, cherry, raspberry, and a hint of tar and tobacco. The wine had also a very good finish. The wine still has some life. It is ready and should be had over the next 5 years. I The 1994 Spottwoode was 13.9% alc, the Forman was 12.9%, and the 1990 Cosentino was just 13% alc. It made us wonder if these newer style cabs with 14.8+ percent alcohol will drink like this in 20+ years. I suspect no, which will leave us wine snobs with lost decades that were seduced by the quick fruit forward gratification sought after in today's modern Napa Cabs. The 1994 Spottswoode is a very nice cab and is made the right way. For those who are into Napa Cabs, this is one you should have in your cellar with several different vintages. It’s a feminine cab that can age! Lastly, this wine tasting night was epic, which provided an experience that will go down as the three best cabs I have ever had at the same time. Score 95 |

10/15/2016 - oldwines Likes this wine: 96 pointsWow, what a difference from the last two bottles of this wine I have had! Decanted at 5pm and drunk from 7-10pm. Medium to dark translucent garnet colored, with no hint of bricking. Best at the 2-4 hour range, this had a delicate and feminine but complex nose of cedar, dark chocolate and cigar tobacco. Totally velvet on the tongue with layers of rich and complex flavors like cigar tobacco, black cherry, bittersweet t chocolate, tar, cedar and a long finish lasting 30-60 seconds. Gorgeous bottle of wine, somewhat unexpectedly. Drunk along with a 1990 Cosentino Cabernet Sauvignon reserve and 1989 Forman Cab that together represented an extraordinary triumvirate of spectacular wines. Drunk with wood fire grilled steaks which they all complemented in their own way. This wine was also great with our apple pie and pumpkin ice cream dessert as the chocolate element really was accentuated. Plenty of life left, at least 5 years. Awesome! |

10/15/2016 - floridawinedrkr Likes this wine: 92 pointsI wasnt at the level of scores some of the others were at. We drank this at San Pietros in NYC. It was closed and tight for sure. No decant time. All though it was improving in the glass. It was lighter in body. It wasn't big, dense or rich in any way. A little heat on the finish. This will improve with more bottle time for sure. |

10/12/2016 - stconner Likes this wine: 92 pointsOpened & let it breath in the bottle for about 90 minutes before drinking. This wine is still very young and has plenty of life left. Very dark in color & great nose. Fruit forward & very smooth. Smooth translates into elegant which is how others describe it. However the low rating is due to no finish. It has a great mid-palate, but then nothing on the finish which is very disappointing. |

9/30/2016 - Schwarzer Hund Likes this wine: NRWe had to drink a bottle tonight from our treasured 25 year vertical of Spottswoode to honor the memory of Spottswoode Founder, Mary Novak. Our 1995 was in perfect condition. Garnet red color, plenty of black current, black cherry aroma, medium weight on palate with layers of black current, blackberry, plum, licorice and cedar. A very long non-tannic finish provided a perfect ending. Probably will last for many years but the 1995 vintage is fantastic now. |

9/28/2016 - wineman73 Likes this wine: 91 pointsThe 2013 Spottswoode Lyndenhurst was decanted 3 hours prior to tasting and was part of a double blinded taste off between 6 other 2013 Napa Cabs that scored 95 points + from professional reviewers. Visually, the wine color was a vibrant purple color with medium viscosity. The nose had expressions of rose petal and cherry. The taste was elegant and soft. It provided a light mouth feel for a young cab. The taste yielded cherry, wet stone, milk chocolate and blackberry. This is a nice cab that can be had now with at least 3 hours of air. Score 91 |

9/24/2016 - oldwines Likes this wine: 91 points2013 Napa Cabernet Double Blind Tasting at Shane's (Nw Jersey): Decanted around 2pm, put back in the covered bottle around 5pm then drunk from 6-9pm...served double blind to all but our host for whom they were only single blind. Bordeaux style blend of 92% cabernet sauvignon with the balance malbec, petit verdot and cab franc. My 4th or 5th ranked wine of 7 but very close to the next higher rated one. Dark garnet with a crimson edge. The wine "looks very balanced" (I know I was called out on this when I said it but that's what It looked like to me...not over done in any dimension). The nose was very fragrant almost Wow...with vanilla, red fruit and a hint of chocolate. On the palate it was elegant and feminine with a little vanilla, cherry, blackberry and chocolate on the finish which I thought was a bit short compared to the others. Several of us thought there was more Cab franc in this but turns out only 2%. More of an early drinker in my mind but certainly will do well for 10 more years, probably getting better. |

9/21/2016 - bestdamncab Likes this wine: 93 pointsWent to the cellar to open an old time favorite and enjoy during dinner and reading a mystery, nose of black cherry, cigar box, and black currants, the same on the palate, very elegant and old time Cabernet Sauvignon style, medium/big body, almost like cherry jam on warm toast, complex, showing it's age, delicious tasting, a long, flavorful finish, and lovely aftertaste. |

9/22/2016 - JonnyG Likes this wine: NRCompletely shut down, sound asleep. After several hours in the glass, this did show some sense of what is to come: medium bodied, black and blue fruit, bitter chocolate. Let it lay for at least five years. 3 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

9/19/2016 - Jeff Leve wrote: 93 pointsMedium/full bodied and on the elegant, refined side of the style range, there is good freshness, purity of fruit and smoky, earthy blackberries to please the palate. But the same level of refinement and plush, polished fruits found in the best vintages is not present. |

Nice fruits all the way through, perfect structure with a slight mineral finish. Didn't have the minerality of a mountain fruit but very well balanced. Do you find this review helpful? 9/17/2016 - jeff nowak Does not like this wine: NRDecanted. Mistake! What an idiot I am. I write a very positive note about this in 2010 emphasizing to drink younger, so what do I do? Hold my next bottle six years, and now it sucks. The first glass was kinda ok, but it quickly lost it's fruit and the tannins and heat took over. The oak/wood component makes me wish I were a termite. Ugh. There is nothing here to recommend. |
