Still a heavy; alcohol showing (must be more than the 14,5 showing on the back label). Deep ripe fruit, sweet Grenache, Arabian spice, not for the faint of heart, a real Cambie-neuf - makes one think of him, which I guess, is all right.

From a mag, at the beach, ate with grilled Italian sausage, smooth, mature, nicely done, not too old, enjoyed it but better early after opening as nd less so after two hours

Seabrook Beach Trip 2023; 7/8/2023-7/15/2023 (Seabrook Island, SC): From magnum. Dense chocolate, leather, some plum and fig/dried fruit notes. Black raspberry. Tobacco. Black pepper. Firing on all cylinders and time to drink up as it did get a touch of earthy funk after too much air.

Entering maturity, while still quite pronounced tannin present. Notes of chocolate, rich Grenache showing with the more rustic Mourvèrdre playing in the background. This is your Big Boy, certainly, a Cambie-wine - needs grilled meat. In no way declining.

Poured a glass and then double-decanted. The first glass was the best. The decanted portion was shut down by strong tannins. The second day was better, although not quite up to the first glass. Dark berries, charcoal, potpourri and a bit of bitter herbal green. The flavor profile and mouthfeel was fairly typical for Chateauneuf, particularly one with a high proportion of mourvedre. For all the reputation, it was neither heavy nor rich, but it remained tannic and very dry to the end. Tannins more than ripeness marked this bottle.

Dinner in the Provinces - Redux! W/Mirela/Todd/Valerie (Chez Walker - Princeton, NJ): Main course, served in advance of and with with the "mixed grill" of middle eastern spiced lamb and goat (excellent). Needed something to stand up to the spice. Only bottle of this vintage in my cellar, had been looking forward to drinking. Slow oxed 2 hours, decanted for the last hour.

Bright and deep ruby color. Nose of red/dark berries, incense and floral/potpourri. Rich and viscous palate showing black raspberry, boysenberry, Christmas cake, baking spice and licorice....Savory/meat flavors going through the mid palate and finsh. A lot going on here, a deep and richly layered wine. Sappy fruit and persistence of classic CdP notes throughout.

A nice showing and the pairing worked. The style likely not for the CdP traditionalist. Some might say to modern...I would just say its style is a fruit forward version of CdP. The decant here was important. Nose was great when first opened but it took 2+ hours to loosen up.

Inky dark, meaty, sweet figs, big fruit, smoky cedar. Beautifully aged, rich, deep, great expression of CdP.

Dark berries, charcoal, soy, charred earth, and something bitter, like a bitter green herb. Super-concentrated, not necessarily rich, but dense and deep. Still substantial tannins. Long finish.

There is a lot of stuff and substance to this wine but it remains buried under a ton of fruit and tannin. It will be quite good (maybe up to 95pts), but not for several years. It is much less advanced than either the 04 or 05. The 04 is by far my favorite of this trio, but let's see where they all end up.

Very fresh, tastes much younger than a 2006 - tannins just beginning to resolve. An outstanding CdP with long life ahead.

UWS Leap year dinner (@ CdW and KvdK): Ripe dark berries and licorice in the bouquet. On the palate the same impressions, soft acidity and tannin, chocolate and a hint of celery. Beautiful and concentrated wine.

Good, intense CdP, but unfortunately, like the regular '06 Clos St. Jean CdP I had 1 week prior, suffers from oxidation. Not bad, but should be fresher. Green Street Tavern with EWG

I drank this bottle, decanted about two hours prior to drinking, with my friend Antonio, enjoying some malai kofta and garlic naan and mulligatawny soup. Great range of notes, but I didn't get the garrigue that others mentioned, and I was specifically looking for that because to me, that is about the most classic SR note historically.

The wine is very elegant, rounded, and has an AWESOME finish. The tannins are resolved, and the mouthfeel is silk. Great bottle of wine, more modern in style, in my opinion. Very classy. The wine didn't seem to evolve much over the couple of hours we consumed it, and I wonder if it might have more development ahead. This is my first Deus Ex Machina so I cannot draw on experience to predict, but I can tell you it is in a pretty good spot right now.

There is a lot going on in this bottle, and I think that I will wait a few years before drinking my next one to compare. Dark fruit, floral, hints of pepper.

My choice for WOTN after the amazing TF 1968 - this had earthy tones and graphite notes to counter the powerful fig paste and damson plum flavors. Feels like it has many years of life in front of it.

This wine is still just a beastly baby. Incredible concentration of fruit and power. The Grenache is very pronounced and present. An incredibly long finish. Wow! Decanted for 1 hour prior to consumption.

Dense, almost edible, the wine is concentrated with layer after of ripe, sweet, fresh, peppery, juicy, dark red fruits, jam and garrigue. Plush and polished, the fruit offered a sensation of purity, along with old vine intensity. This powerful wine is not for the timid.

Really meaty, bloody almost, dense, spice, clove, olives, raisin, prune. Lots of acid, but alcohol maybe a bit warming.
Ok, big wine, feels quite developed, not super fresh in nature, lots of cooked fruit. Is this the ripe style or relatively advanced fruit development for a 11 year old wine?

Quite similar to the showing a year ago, this is a bold, manly wine; not fleshy and flabby, but dark, rustique, marked my mourvèdre and underneath the rich Cambie-exteriour, there is real chateauneuf in the heart. Now hands off for a couple of years, things to come here, me thinks (with SlagterC' own lamb chops)

Q2 - 2016 Tasting - The Rhone! - Another taster's perspective ((The Apt)): #5 of 16 wines tasted (double-blind) at a Rhone tasting. I was on my own in ranking this as my third favorite wine of the tasting. I thought it had just enough nice barnyard funk on the nose and palate, with great tannins. Would like the opportunity to drink again.

Q2 Tasting - The Rhone! (The Apt): Wine #5: Drank this double-blind (single blind for me since we brought this wine). This was meant to be our ringer - had gotten a recommendation on it from someone at a wine dinner who seemed to have excellent taste. In retrospect, kindof a monster of a wine that needs a much longer decant than we gave it to come together I think (only decanted about 2 hours). Alcohol was much more in one's face on this one than some of the others. Beneath that you could get the red fruits and spice, but I think they were somewhat overpowered. (1 penny)
