Pale garnet with copper highlights, some bricking and a medium viscosity (13.5% ABV). On the nose this aged Pinot has medium (+) intensity aromas of cherries jubilee, strawberry compote, earth, rose, baking spice, vanilla thread, Goji berry, Rooibos tea and baked lingonberry. The palate is dry with medium (+) acidity, medium body and medium (-) tannins that are fully integrated. The flavors are somewhat tart but I get cherry, strawberry, baking spice, rose and Rooibos. It's a rather stark difference from the power and intensity of the nose- I was hoping for a grand slam but the unripe nature of the fruit is a little underwhelming. The finish is long which makes up a point or two and the structure is still there for more aging yet I doubt the fruit will shine, perhaps more tertiary development is possible. This is the third bottle I have tasted of this wine in 12 years, it still does't quite live up to my desires- 89 points and for $55 it's a 3 star effort. Cellar at your own discretion.

At 10 years of age, this is drinking beautifully. Silky blackcurrant notes, floral notes and undergrowth. So pretty. More time will allow further secondary notes to come through - I expect with 5 more years it will be spellbinding.

Drinking well. Elegant red fruit, smidge of earthiness. Don’t see this improving. Drink up!

Two weeks in France; 4/12/2024-4/24/2024: The collectors in France kindly wanted to do a side-by-side comparison of old Burgundy and Rhone since I mentioned they converged with age, but this pair was easy to tell apart since the Burgundy had higher acidity and cooler red fruit. Guessed both to be from the 1970s and was shocked that they were two decades older, I felt this was autumnal rather than tertiary. Apparently this Lafon should have showed even more youthfully!

1st borrow of a six-pack and opened to pair with the middle courses of Popped to a milestone birthday dinner at the Inn at Little Washington. This was the only bottle opened that was not at its peak. Decanted at the start of dinner, this was still a big wine - big fruits, and tannin still evident (tho not overwhelming). But it had finally opened up when I revisited this at the end of the meal and you had a sense of how stunning this will be in a few more years.

Bright red and black fruit notes, with wet soil and woodspice in the background. The palate is very pleasingly juicy, with grippy yet fine tannin and a pleasing tang (not sour, but rather refreshing and a tad meaty) on the finish. A tad short, perhaps, but overall a very serious wine with plenty of development ahead.

01024. Intense rose petal, soaring hawthorn red fruit, lychee, ripe blue fruit, earthy, quite meaty, muddy, horse piss, lots of spice, dried chili powder, citrus and tropical acidity, orange flowers, vanilla and bakery spice. So ethereal and lifted to the best of tradition, with notable hint of rough even burnt tannins of Volnay. Such density and strength and so sweet. Old school winemaking at its best. 94-95+

Dinner at Tiny Pine Bistro (Carbondale, CO): Not sure if this was wholly representative, because if it isn't, that's pretty shocking how fast this is evolving. Too earthy and autumnal for a 2013, with the red fruit in a very advanced state. Judgment reserved; I'm gonna crack a bottle from a different source to check.

A private lunch (Restaurant Le Soufflot, Meursault, France): From Taillepieds and Clos des Chênes, bottled January 2023 with the chèvre à deux becs. No stems this year. Light and elegant, beautifully defined red and blue berry fruit, floral lift and a whiffs of undergrowth and sweetness from the wood, aromatic and fresh, toute en delicatesse (12.5% ABV), creamy texture and minerally energy, percaline tannins, exciting interplay of ripe fruit, tannins and acidity on the long finish.

Great fruit and acidity. Not overly aged, slight Liqorice/spicy taste but overall very pleasant. Great mouth feel. Very well made but not the tastiest otherwise very high score. Opened up after an hour, was also cold initially, became a big wine (tasted at 110)

Felt that theres quite a significant bottle variation given the source came from the same. Medium+ nose intensity with notes of spices, toast, charred fruit, dried red fruits.

Popped and poured. Drinking well without decanting. Very earthy nose combined with red fruits. Very good complexity on the nose. Plate is quite good, but not quite as impressive and finish is very good but a little sweet for my taste. Not about to head downhill, but no reason to wait, IMO.

Fine Burg drinking well right now.

Wines in Cardiff; 4/19/2024-4/20/2024: Beautiful colour with bricking.
Spicy nose and finish.
In the context of the vintage this should be considered good but the fruit is lacking.
I suspect in a more solar vintage this could be excellent.
No tannins perceptible.

Rose, strawberry, spice, straw. nose took some time to develop, palate is good for a bad vintage - dark fruits, balanced acidity, long enough. QPR? Probably not worth £130 but can definitely taste the prem cru presence.
