2006 Fratelli Brovia Barolo VilleroNebbiolo more |
5/13/2024 - devillighter wrote: 94 pointsDecanted (very little sediment) and consumed immediately over several hours in a Grassl Cru. Drank well from the start. Intense somewhat exotic nose lots of spice and brambles. Palate is a classic Barolo profile. I found it quite giving for an ‘06. Lots of fruit left and not overly tannic. Clearly lots of life ahead, but drinking nicely today. |

4/11/2024 - devillighter Likes this wine: 93 pointsPnP in a Grassl Cru. Really nice. Very drinkable: perfectly ripe strawberries. Good acids. Open from the beginning. Happy to have opened one of these shortly after delivery. I’m sure it will drink well for many years, but an excellent experience right now. |

1/20/2024 - devillighter wrote: 90 pointsA better bottle than the one I opened a year ago. Decanted for sediment and consumed immediately over several hours in a Grassl Cru. A good choice for a snowy winter evening. A bit of alcohol on the nose when first opened. Herbal savory fruits with decent acidity backing it up. A satisfying rustic wine, decent value from WineBid at $30. Will hold my last bottle for a few more years. |

12/2/2023 - devillighter Likes this wine: 91 pointsDecanted and consumed in a Grassl Cru over several hours. Fairly open for business from the start. Medium body, elegant, mineral, nice acidity, fruity. Not a Bordeaux for those looking for power, but drinking quite nicely to my taste, although perhaps a bit generic in style. Poor QPR at greater than $50, but good for the close out price I paid 10 years ago. |

10/23/2023 - devillighter wrote: 88 pointsReally enjoyed the 2017 vintage of this wine on several occasions and was excited to get a great deal on a case of the 2019. However, the first bottle of the case did not live up to my impressions of the 2017. Not as fresh and zippy as the 2017. Rounder. Not quite as fresh. A bit wooly. Bitter on the finish. |

7/25/2023 - devillighter Likes this wine: 93 pointsIn a great spot. Quick double decant for sediment. Open almost from the start. Village level weight. Excellent silky texture. Nice balance between tertiary aged character and primary fruit. |

7/23/2023 - devillighter Likes this wine: 91 pointsPnP into a Grassl Cru and followed over an evening. 1er weight on the palate, cherry fruit undergirded by dark cherry and earth base note / stemmy whole cluster. Needs time. |

4/22/2023 - devillighter Likes this wine: 92 pointsHad this wine twice with consistent showings recently. Chalky and mineral, good acidity, somewhere between a Muscadet and white Burgundy. Has that cool climate / coastal feel. I’m a big fan. Luis Pato’s sparkling and whites have been excellent - need to try the reds next. |

4/22/2023 - devillighter wrote: 88 pointsNeeded two hours in the decanter to get itself together. The palate shifted back and forth between showing earthier elements, soil and truffle, and then more fruit forward, almost confected / smarties / vitamin red fruit. Good acidity. Not much aromatically - some earth. Overall I can’t say I enjoyed the flavor profile. Maybe I would like this with some more age and this is in an awkward spot? |

2018 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo MonviglieroNebbiolo more |
4/17/2023 - devillighter Likes this wine: 96 pointsFirst experience with Burlotto Monvigliero. PnP into a Grassl Cru and followed over the course of an evening and paired with roast lamb. On the nose this has the Burlotto Monvigliero signature I always read about: olive tapenade and super fresh ripe strawberries. Incredible how accurate these descriptors are. On the palate the same olive tapenade and strawberry with some other more classic nebbiolo flavors. Mildly tannic. Elegant. Open right from the start. Very drinkable and delicious. No frame of reference to how this compares with other vintages, but it is really good. Gained some weight over the course of the evening. A super wine. 96+ |

2016 Fratelli Brovia Langhe Freisa La Villerina SeccaLanghe DOC more |
4/15/2023 - devillighter Likes this wine: 91 pointsPnP into a Grassl Cru. Bought two of these on WineBid recently mainly because of the 2016 vintage and I was unaware that Brovia made a freisa. Not too much going on aromatically. On the palate is sour cherry and pine. Hint of alcohol. Medium to light bodied. Herbal. Finish is quite herbal and resinous bitter pine. Medium tannins. I like this. It is unusual. For my tastes somewhere between nebbiolo, sangiovese, and a bitter amaro. Ok value at $30. |

3/18/2023 - devillighter Likes this wine: 93 pointsPnP into a Grassl Liberte. Needed something white and refreshing after pruning trees all day and I have a six pack of this. It delivered exactly what I needed. Raul Perez is such a great winemaker. This is the perfect balance of fruity and mineral with a stony finish that draws you to the next sip. Bright acidity in balance with the fruit. Makes me wonder why I chase $$$ bottles when this is readily available and hits the spot so well. |

3/18/2023 - devillighter Likes this wine: 92 pointsDecanted for sediment and consumed in a Grassl cru over the course of an evening. Like others have noted, this needs about an hour in the decanter to start showing much, especially aromatically. Nose is mostly baked earth with just a hint of dark blue fruit. I found the palate to be better and more interesting with high acidity and a savory and herbaceous character alongside deep red fruit. Very nice wine, I just wish the aromatics were as nice as the palate - perhaps this will happen with more time… definitely drank best at the end of the evening. 92+ |

2/26/2023 - devillighter wrote: 89 pointsDecanted and consumed over several hours in a Grassl Cru. In neck fill and a long cork in excellent condition. Ready to go from the beginning with some improvement about an hour or so in the decanter. Nose is not terribly expressive - some earth and chocolate. On the palate it shows high acid and a good deal of tertiary character - very faint cherry, orange, leather. Back end is quite drying with some bitter chocolate. Ok value from WineBid at $47, but overall kind of boring. |

12/28/2022 - devillighter wrote: 87 pointsDecanted and consumed immediately over several hours. I did not care for the nose of this wine, which started off quite funky (oaky??) and never blew off, but I don’t think it was from TCA. Palate was better, if not terribly complex. Relatively light and not over the top, with light blue berry and grape along with earthy soil and some orange citrus flavors. |

2012 Rhys Pinot Noir Home VineyardSan Mateo County more |
12/24/2022 - devillighter Likes this wine: 93 pointsProbably my best Rhys pinot experience to date. PnP’d into a Grassl Cru and consumed over 4 hours. At the beginning this felt a little one dimensional - well made but a bit boring which is how I find a lot of the Rhys I consume. But after an hour or two it gained some weight, the disparate pieces became more integrated, and a pretty cherry liqueur sweetness emerged (but not over the top). Still drinking quite primary. |

12/20/2022 - devillighter Likes this wine: 94 pointsDecanted for sediment and consumed immediately over the course of three or four hours in a Grassl Cru. Base neck fill and cork in good shape. My first BAMA. Coffee and rosemary on the nose. Lovely palate with mature fruit flavors but also freshness such as orange/lemon peel. Light and deep. This is really nice. Better for me without food as the wine is quite delicate and ethereal. |

2007 Antoniolo Gattinara Le CastelleNebbiolo more |
9/17/2022 - devillighter Likes this wine: NRDecanted for sediment and consumed starting immediately over several hours in a Grassl Cru. Initially, a fair amount of VA, but it blows off rather quickly for the most part. After fifteen minutes this is drinking very well. Black currant and woody herb nose with a touch of VA that serves to lift the nose - I find it quite pleasant. The black currant note continues on the palate with classic Nebbiolo character. Pure and red fruited. Still grippy tannins. Good acidity. Drinking really well now and should continue to do so. Dave Canada’s review is spot on. |

6/11/2022 - devillighter Likes this wine: 92 pointsPopped this bottle spur of the moment - decanted and consumed right away over the course of 3 hours in a Grassl Cru. DIAM 5 cork was in good shape. Took about 30 minutes to an hour to really get going. Slightly rustic with lots of Nebbiolo character. Quite full with a lot of cherry fruit. This still drinks very young to me with a lot of mouth drying tannin in the back end. No way I would have pegged it at 13 years old if blinded. I think it will be better in 5-10-20 more years if the cork holds. Still got a lot of pleasure out of it today. |

2017 Halcon Vineyards Syrah ElevacionYorkville Highlands more |
1/25/2022 - devillighter wrote: NRFirst of six. PnP. Wanted to check in as I have not had a Halcon before. For my taste opening now is a bit of an academic exercise. It needs more time, five years at least. It has very good substance and think it will drink very well in the future. The palate is medium bodied with nice acidity. Has a bit of a stemmy character that needs time to integrate. I saved enough for one glass, corked the bottle, and sampled it two days later. It still tasted young but the pieces were a little easier to discern. Herbal and a bit of smokey pepper character. Finish is quite mineral. Lots of potential. |

2014 Château LanessanHaut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more |
12/29/2021 - devillighter Likes this wine: NRDecanted and consumed in a Grassl Cru glass. DIAM cork. Took about 30 minutes to open up. Classic Bordeaux. Agree with other notes that this has a bit of a chinon character. Reticent nose, but it is very nice on the palate. Fresh with good acidity. Great food wine. A bit of herbal complexity. Love Lanessan and at this price point hard to beat. Such a flexible wine and it will continue age with aplomb but is also delicious today. |

2018 Wasenhaus SpätburgunderBaden more |
11/26/2021 - devillighter Likes this wine: NRPnP into Grassl Cru. Pretty, unadulterated pinot noir. Quite drinkable and fruity. Feels like a Bourgogne rouge or maybe a village level burgundy. Enjoyable, but for the price was hoping for just a tad more complexity. Last glass was the best after several hours open as it gained a bit of weight. |

11/25/2021 - devillighter Likes this wine: 92 pointsThanksgiving wine. Decanted for sediment, poured a small glass, and left the remainder for an hour. Bit of brett on the nose, but quite pleasant and in balance with leather and vegetal aromas. High acid, red berries, cranberries and strawberries on the palate. Also get an orange or citrus component. Overall well balanced. Still feels quite young and I have no doubt it will age elegantly for many more years, but also drinking very well now. Thought it drank well right from the initial pour. |

11/24/2021 - devillighter Likes this wine: 90 pointsPnP. Dark cherry nose. High acid, red fruits, a bit of herbs, almond. Prototypical sangiovese. Should age gracefully for many more years, but drinking well today. Better with food than without as it’s still a bit nervy. Probably will integrate more in time. |

2016 Cantina dei Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema Carema Riservamore |
8/12/2021 - devillighter Likes this wine: 93 pointsPopped and poured into a Grassl Cru. Very impressed with this wine. Aromas of roses, herbs, and red berries. The nose is a little tight, but the palate is really where this shines today. Beautiful clean concentrated fruit with a weightless character. Obvious depth. The tannin hides under the fruit, but it is not a particularly tannic wine. Reminds me of 2016 Vallana Campi Raudii, but with more depth (would be an interesting side by side). This would appeal to Pinot lovers. I wish I had room to store a case. |
