2019 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne

Pinot Noir more

4/28/2024 - Pinot_Geek Likes this wine: 95 points

Whoa.
Dense powerful primary fruit, all ripe red cherries, earth and iron, spicebox, stems, perfumed aromatics.
Medium+ tannic grip and medium acids. Last glass evolved to show some licorice, salt and a touch of tar. 13.5% Alc.

Every now and then you sip a delicate Syrah that is easy to confuse with Pinot, but this is the first Pinot I’ve had that tasted like a love-child of Nebbiolo…nothing delicate here.

This is a delicious glass with loads of good material to age well and interestingly, but I suspect it will be a polarizing wine; if ethereal and light-bodied are what you want from Burgundy, this ain’t it.

Tasted blind

Dark-fruited, salty-stemmy, some reductive graphite notes. With airtime this opened up and mellowed out.

Liked this enough to seek it out. 17’ is a Burgundy vintage I mostly skipped for reds, but lately I find a lot of pleasure there.

Corton Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

Tasted blind, I guessed 17 or 15, maybe a Corton or a Chambolle Sentiers (because of the grip)

Ripe dark fruit nose, noticeably dark color.
Juicy dark-fruited backed by med stiff tannins and acid. I liked this a lot, enough to seek out.

Corton is a sweet spot for quality and price for lovers of a generous and dark-fruited Burgundy (like me). See also Mallard, Tollot-Beaut, Bouchard’s Le Corton, Jadot’s Corton Pougets.

Nose of baby sh*t and berries.
Ripe dark fruit, with some low-med tannic backbone and low-ish acid. This surprised me for how open and approachable it was, based on other reviews.

An easy glass of pleasure that stood out on a table of delicious wine (13 LLM Corton Renardes, 17 Faiveley Chambolle Orveaux, 12 Chezeaux Vougeot…). But it went up against its serious and structured neighbor, 15’ Dom. Trapet Chambertin, my WOTN

Dark fruited, backed by stiff and grippy-salty tannins, med acid. 13% Alc.

Has all the right stuff to develop well, but I’d suggest let it rest till 2030 so the tannins can mellow and integrate.

Oh, hello.
Drying and stony meets a light touch of lemon-pear.

This may be too cold to appreciate properly. I should probably have another glass…or three.

Dark, smells of diapers, mint and funky soil (in a good way).
Savory more than fruit at first, licorice and savory, earthy and salty. Black cherries emerging with warmth and airtime. Med-grippy tannins and low-med acid. 13% Alc.

A serious and savory Burg, in contrast to my expectations of a sun-ripe fruit-forward glass. The one you marry, not the one you date in your feckless youth.

Good stuff, fine to open now (with food) but plenty of stuffing for future positive development.

Remarkable spice-perfumed nose leaps from the glass at first pour. (This from a a guy who is all about the palate usually, not the nose).

Initially reticent, tasting of underbrush, briar, soil and stems. Bit of coconut(?).
With airtime and warming, dark fruit peeks out, balancing and welcoming another sip, and another after that.

Give it time to warm up and wake up and be rewarded. Great stuff-it makes me want to try this from a riper vintage.

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

A Burg-guy’s eye view of Bordeaux (with grilled lamb)

Rich. Chocolate and blackberries with ample balancing acid and gritty tooth-gripping tannins. 85% Cab/15% Merlot, 13.5% Alc.

This is excellent, a steak wine to rule them all and years of development to go. Even a Pinot person like me can like this one. The welcome spine of acid and tannic grip keeps this ship on an even keel. All that said, I must not be wired for Bordeaux because I’d take a well-made OR Pinot or 1er Burg any day of the week in place of this pedrigreed Cab blend.

That said, I have a few more bottles to sample down the years (in the name of science), and um, I’m not selling them.

Quenching tart red/black cherry fruit, initially a touch of the acetic and then bitter cherry. On day two this settled and opened up into a more generous glass. Good, but not as transporting as I might hope for from Amoureuses.

Dark ripe berry fruit up front, a touch of reduction/gunflint, low-med tannic grip, low acid. 13.5% Alc.

An easy-to-enjoy glass but not a complex one. It seems sort of indistinct, not from anywhere in particular. I’m a big fan of Fourrier’s Gevrey wines, but this particular Chambolle was just ok for me.

Maybe not a serious/complex wine for the ages, but a nice glass, easy to like right now. As others have noted, drinks approachable and young, so would not hurt to give it time.

Light-bodied, delicate citrus and dryness. Its Brut nature so 0 dosage, but there is a hint balancing sugar there from the grapes. 12.5% Alc.
Delicious with sushi.

A grumble though: What kind of pretentious twit waxes champagne corks!?
Oh wait, there's a picture of a certain bearded and ubiquitous somm/winemaker-as-cherub on the label; mystery solved. (I kid, the guy seems to make good wines wherever he goes…)
It was a messy and painstaking process to get the damn thing open and dropped bits of wax/plastic/whatever into the bubbles.

On the palate, Pinot funky, quite ripe dark berry fruit meets plums and figs. Touch of salty wood, rubber and leather, biggish. 14% alcohol.

This bottle tastes advanced for it’s age tonight, perhaps a reflection of the solar 15’ vintage or bottle variation. (Bought on release, stored at 55F etc, etc).
Drink up!

Opens with ripe red cherry fruit, followed by quenching, woody dryness. Reductive flint notes, mellowing med tannic grip and med acid. Seems concentrated yet balanced. 13.5% Alc.

A glass of delicious pleasure today, with all the elements to evolve into mature complexity. I’ve been lucky to sample the 15’, 16’ and 18’ this week. All were excellent, with similar profiles of red fruit, earth, iron and plenty of stuffing to improve over time. But the 15’ was the most open and pleasurable at the moment.
