Dark, smells of diapers, mint and funky soil (in a good way). Savory more than fruit at first, licorice and savory, earthy and salty. Black cherries emerging with warmth and airtime. Med-grippy tannins and low-med acid. 13% Alc.
A serious and savory Burg, in contrast to my expectations of a sun-ripe fruit-forward glass. The one you marry, not the one you date in your feckless youth.
Good stuff, fine to open now (with food) but plenty of stuffing for future positive development.

La Paulée de Los Angeles - The Verticals (Maybourne Hotel - Beverly Hills CA): Walkaround vertical tasting. Intense ripeness is still front-and-center, nicely supported by meaty spice. Little complexity has emerged to date. A great wine that might not be at its best phase right now, but its 94-95 point potential remains clear, I would just push out its peak drinking window to later than I previously thought, so now, 2029 forward.

Wines Tasted at the La Paulée Verticals Session (The Maybourne, Beverly Hills): Lighter red. Herbal aromas. Delicate, piquant, discretely sweet red fruit, pure earth, and a surprising dose of tannin at the end. I've had this 3 times over the course of 15 years (all at La Paulée) and loved it each time. These Griottes shown tonight are epitomes of the supremely elegant Drouhin style and make me so sad that I did not buy a broader range of their wines.

On the nose, this was just breathtaking. Deep notes of earth, forest floor, dark berries. Lots of floral character, with additional complexity from herb and/or spice notes. On the palate, however, this felt a bit light- almost thin (certainly based on the expectations set by the nose). Finish was not particularly long. Overall, I wasn't sure what to make of this. It was one of the most compelling wines I've experienced on the nose but fell short of expectations on the palate. Maybe with more cellar time this will fill out more and gain weight and depth (and length on the finish)?

Decanted about 30 min. Ready to go right away and nice for a couple hours.
