Viscous and juicy, starting with cotton candy and nectarine vibes, with a quick follow-up of mouthwatering malic acid. With time the two will meld. But such a joy, regardless of the accompanying dish. This wine is both subtle and talkative. I will always order this when it’s on a menu. Viva la Jura.

I just got a Hiyu club shipment and was reviewing my inventory. Saw the 50-point review for this and lol’ed. Had to see if it was true.

Nose is typical natty wine — that sort of funky malic acid brett nose, with some ethanol. My wife calls it cat pee. I kind of like it. No sulfuric compounds detected, though.

Palate had some fun cantaloupe and cotton candy notes. Maybe those mini oranges my kids eat. Bit of bitterness on the back. But actually quite lovely. Feels like it needs another year to marry, but still a fun bottle.

I always think about cancelling my membership, but I’ve had pinots that are simply ethereal, and the nattier wines are a fun break. So I’m not out yet!

Nose from heaven. Could live in that glass.
Tannins fully resolved. Just a juicy silk bomb.
Decanted briefly but not needed (perfect on PnP).
Raspberry, plum, tobacco, leather.
Just so bright, youthful, and entrancing.

Shockingly bad. Cloudy, bitter, and funky on day 1. Bready and sour on day 2. Just the most unpleasant off notes. Some stewed raspberry and dark cherry in there but very, very hidden. Drain pour.

2016 harvest, disgorged March 2021, in magnum.
Open for a party on a Saturday night, left most on my porch with a Saran Wrap + rubber band top (mid 30s temps) and FIVE days later I finished it. Honestly really good both times, but even better day 5. Leans more lemon and orange zest but it’s a softer acidity and there’s some lees-contacty bready notes to balance it. More strawberry and vanilla on day 5. Good QPR and plenty of runway ahead.

Great bottle over lunch. Lots of spritzy pop; really dances on the palate. Good to go on PnP. Prominent tasting note is… wait for it… grapes. Well, grape jolly rancher. Some heft and body but nothing overpowering. This goes down easily and should be consumed now.

This just sits too heavy for me. Some decent fruit and certainly some oak, but a bit too austere for a Pinot. Felt a bit manipulated.

The funk that previously presented as a yougurty cotton candy was subsumed under a more gun flinty, green pepper note that seemed out of place. Quite a bit of bottle variation on these. Still a lovely wine.

Drank with a 2014 Guiberteau Breze thinking I’d like the Guiberteau more and resolve to stop paying the premium for Clos Rougeard. Two of three (myself included) preferred the Clos Rougeard. This was such a calming and harmonious bottle. No reduction. Creamy banana tropical fruit notes with some orange zest and white flower. Pretty incredible.

Two hour decant but it wasn’t really needed. Although saving a glass for Day 2 is recommended. Like all Chave Hermitage, this one was effortlessly perfect. Never showy. Just so easy, comfortable, familiar. A powerful wine that’s exceedingly airy. Savory and acidic. Leather and cherries. So silky. Finish for days. Just such a treat.

Popped another in honor of the spring releases. This starts like an orchestra at fortissimo, with the “acid” section in full force. This really hits its stride on day 3, where it relaxes into what I hope will be the calling card of American-made methode champenoise wines. All the hallmarks of a quality champs but more acid-driven (young peach acidity, not lemon), with the lees-driven brioche notes folding in nicely. Need to wait a few years to open the rest. Patience!

Similar notes as my last review. Great QPR on this. More texture and depth than a traditional prosecco. These few extra months in bottle helped. Also pairs well with Vanderpump Rules.

As others have said, a very pleasant surprise. Really the only fault is the short finish, and maybe a missing wow factor. Nose is berry and spice, almost Italian. Perfect structure with enough tannins to give it plenty of body but still a soft and supple wine. Drinks on the fruitier, bright berry side of pinot. Very easy to gulp. Everybody would like this.

Grabbed this at an auction for $75 assuming it would be a dud but was very wrong. Had with a 2000 DP and this had the upper hand. Plenty of fresh yeasty, caramel notes and a yougurty acidity that really stood out. Obviously a mature wine but still fully in its prime. Not sure there would be any benefit to holding at this point but it has plenty of life in it.

Is peach brûlée a thing? That’s what this is. Stunning layers of juicy citrus over a bed of lees-contacty caramel notes. Truly perplexed by the low scores and the notes re thinness and austerity. Also perplexed by the “only a champs fan could love it” comment. Maybe there’s some bottle variation? I loved it. You will too.

Very tight, stemmy, and reptilian on night one. Evolved dramatically by night 2, but still nothing to write home about. Missing all the punchy fruit of a younger wine but with no positive signs of aging. I can relate… Fine, but not going to convince anyone that Burgundy is worth the price.

Lovely fresh-strawberry note here but I double decanted back and forth for hours and couldn’t crack the muted, tight core. Seemed promising but never got there. Not sure if time will help.

Edit: Undrinkable on night 2.

Had this shipped to me during a hot month and the capsule broke and the cork was about 1/4 out. Ugh. Decided to cellar it and forget about it. Six months later I popped it open on a whim and it was gorgeous from the outset. No bricking at all. Youthful and berry-forward on the nose and palate. A cool, pleasing acidity with some truffle and cocoa powder notes. Not overly complex but silky, lively, and fun.

Might have caught this one at a bad time. Huge Aubert fan (and CIX in particular), but got massive amounts of flint and green pepper on this. Missing pretty much all of the notes others have mentioned. I have a couple more bottles so hoping this was an anomaly.

Edit: WAY better on night 2. Guessing this just needs a few more years. Not surprised.

Edit #2: Forgot I left a glass-worth in the fridge for seven (!) days. Gorgeous. Classic Aubert. Looooong finish. 96 point good. Confirms that this needs a few years.

Double decanted. Definitely better on night 2. Like others said, this is heavy on jammy berries and vanilla with some tobacco notes. Not too dissimilar from a Jamet style. But at times reminds me of a forgettable, inky Napa cab. Balanced and very tasty, but perhaps missing a bit of pop.

NV Jacques Selosse Initial

Champagne Grand Cru Chardonnay more

12/11/2023 - stanqwash Likes this wine: 94 points

My first Initial. Truly shocked at how unique this was. Had to check twice to make sure it was a BdB. Such a deep, red wine character to the nose and palate. Eventually landed on the primary tasting note, which is unquestionably whisky barrel. It’s so prevalent that I’d almost be shocked if there wasn’t an ex-whiskey barrel involved (I know there wasn’t but still.) Other than that it was very balanced and tight — some soft acidity, light toast notes, some strawberry on the nose. Creamy mousse. Really a lovely bottle.

I bought a fair amount of Dethune from SommSelect 5+ years ago based on review alone, and haven’t paid much attention to that stash since then. But this was a screamer. Incredibly complex and quaffable. Equal parts nutty brioche and creamy lemon. Even a sneaking note of strawberry cream in there (probably carried by the dosage). Just lovely. Tiny bubbles, goes down way too fast. Glad I have a pile of these!

Really punches above its weight. Rides the acidity/lemony side of the coin but it’s a complex champagne with plenty of yeasty, creamy notes in there too. No bitterness on the finish — a wine you can truly guzzle. Buy in multiples.
