Well kept bottles are still drinking well. Mature color but no excess browning. Beautiful complex aromas spanning the whole spectrum: still fruit remnants, iron, earthy notes, leather. Very smooth, great texture. No excess of oak or alcohol; very well balanced. Everything I was looking for.

Medium light red with brown edges. Light aged nose, nutmeg, cinnamon, plum and cherry nose. Obviously aged Sangiovese. Dry earthy cherry flavours and a soft finish with just enough acid.

Probably a bit past peak. Slightly bricked. High marks for sangio typicity: there's still some red cherry fruit but this wine is about other things: mushroom, earth, leather, sage, and rosemary. Tannins almost fully resolved. Held up well in the glass over an hour or two, the fruit getting a bit brighter and sweeter. A subtle, elegant, pretty wine that I very much enjoyed.

Very elegant. Medium-bodied and soft with good typicity, offering sour cherry, leather, smoke, and earth. Balanced and at peak. No bells and whistles here, just a good food wine.

Drinking really well, great smokey nose. Very tight for about the first hour, needs serious time and decanting before it starts to turn into wine. Probably at its peak, but in no danger of going over the hill any time soon.

Drinking very nice...Big bouquet of tobacco, leather and dried cherries. Full, rich and complex with loads of fruit on the palate...Layers. Long lingering finish.

nose: lovely and melded nose of dark red cherries, bits of roasted herbs, a touch of tobacco, violets and bits of red florals, some leather, and bits of dried plums and spices. As it opens up, it takes on a more intoxicating take on the tones and really starts to wrap you in. Excellent depth with a real sensuous side to it
taste: Very well polished with a touch of class to it and medium acidity that still holds itself well. Good tannins also support the wine with well balanced and silky tones of dark red cherries, roasted herbs, violets, some bits of dried red florals and all sorts of spice tones
overall: a beautiful brunello. this has really grown in the glass and is just so classy and lovely. While mature, this will easily go many years further as the color is rich and has a good concentration to it. There is a bit of browning at the edges, but the color is great considering that this is 19 years old

New Year's Week 2008/9; 12/28/2008-1/4/2009 (Northwoods): An interesting experiment. Initially, on the pop/pour, this was several points lower than the 1988. After an hour, they were going in different directions. The '88 losing a bit, while the '90 gains a bit while it loses some acidity. This still carries a fair amount of tannin, which would suggest better with food than as a sipper.

A medium ruby with more red fruits than the Palmer. Dark strawberry preserves and a nice mineral backbone that was true to its region. A very pretty wine at peak and well balanced. It held up well to the fat in the burger. 92 pts

Needs some air. Popped/poured w/ Marty on an impromptu tasting. Nice aromatics on the nose, but started out with quite a sour taste. Resolved after 30-45 minutes, with the result giving similar impressions to my earlier note. Cedar box, medium-bodied with cherry fruit, medium long finish.
Update: Better, with more fruit and a bit of menthol/eucalyptus undercurrent after 2-3 hours. More sublime with add'l time in the decanter / glass. Note to self: decant for 2 hours next time around.

House Cleaning; 6/21/2007-6/24/2007 (Home Sweet Home): Excellent bottle of aged Brunello. On opening, a meaty, leather nose that morphs over 30 minutes into a more perfumed, fruit filled rendition. On the palate, sweet fruit over a significant background of cigar box wood. Not as rich and deep as some (FBM's 1997 Tenimenti Angelini over 2007 New Year), but elegant, understated, and ready to drink.

SOBER (fka TWITS) Tasting (My place): Nose of red and purple fruits, with nice minerality. On the palate, more excellent dark fuit, though somewhat redder fruit compared with the Rennina. Again, an excellent wine, slightly more elegant, but somewhat less complex. A bit of something like a limestone. This is moving into its prime window based on this bottle.
