Held up a bit better than expected in that it still had some fruit. But oddly was somewhat frissant. Very strange for a Zin especially at this age. Did it have residual sugar and continue to ferment in the bottle? Still drinkable but definitely different.

Nose of briar, dusty, dry gravel, chocolate decadence cake, and black cherry, same on the palate, very tasty, big body, mouth filling fruit, at/slightly past peak drinking window, time to enjoy this terrific Hayne Vineyard designated Zinfandel, sweet/sour fruit on the palate, and a long, savory finish. Probably five or more years past the end of its drinking window. While the 2000 Hayne that preceded it was DOA, this was actually holding up better than expected. Nice dark red. Kind of pruney on the nose, but not unpleasant. Noticeable heat, but not too obtrusive. More prunes on the palate, along with a healthy dose of chocolate. Light-to-medium body and certainly not as plush as it probably was back in the day, but it produced a really rich and fairly lengthy finish.

My last bottle of old Turley zin, still sitting on a bit of PS.
This hasn't budgeted- for better or worse- than my last note nearly 2 years ago. Obvious alcohol on the nose, bizarre zing on the tip of your tongue (big acid addition?), and tons of chocolate.

An interesting bottle of wine. Definitely should have drank in 2014 or earlier but it is what it is. Currently, the wine has a nice nose but the alcohol is clearly evident. Flavors of raisins and prunes but not unpleasant. Just not as lush as I expected. Also, not nearly as much pepper as I expected. I still have a couple bottles so I will put them on my "drink immediately" list. As earlier reviewer stated, just because you can age Turley zins doesn't mean you should. Lesson learned...

Aromatic nose with pomegranate, slight heat; palate is full bodied, rich chocolate, mixture of red and black fruits, high alcohol (16.5%) with some heat, interestingly a solid medium to medium-plus acidity with some tongue tingling sensation which is unexpected; short-medium finish. A high-octane Turley Zin at full maturity if not beyond... drink now. It holds its alcohol fairly well though not perfectly, and for me lacks some of the spicy black pepper character of better cooler climate zins. 90-91-

Properly stored bottle, PnP tonight and showing youth. No signs of oxidation, and the only obvious sign of age is the sediment cast. Black fruit, milk chocolate, fine tannin, tingly acidic vibrance- as if it were mildly carbonated (which it isn't). How do you achieve 16.5% ABV and this level of acidity?

Fantastic Turley. Classic Turley flavors but with the additional benefit of depth and complexity. No sign of 16+% alcohol. Drank the entire bottle myself in one night and not even grossly hung over the next day.

The fruit has devolved into a flavor of dried prunes and black cherries. Still a lovely wine, but will not be for everyone's taste. Despite its alcohol content of 16.5%, the wine does not fast hot.

I have had many a Turley Zin, but this is my 1st Hayne. After a 2 hour decant, the initial nose is alcohol, prunes and yes, raisins. This must have been decadent when youthful. Now rich and mature, showing dried fruits, particularly apricots, with a hint of Robitussin. My lesson from this wine was that even though a wine CAN age, doesn't mean it should.

Tough to rate, over 16% etoh is very noticeable on the nose, almost like a fortified wine. Tons of sweet raisins in the palate, and a hot finish. Was a little tough to drink, bc was not paired properly.

Still inky purple. Very balance but fruit is fading with sum raisin like flavors emerging. Given the color this wine has lots of time, however, Im not a fan of an old zinfandel that tastes like an older cab. If you are not either, I would drink any of this vintage over the next 2-3 years. I believes this wine is at its peak or slightly past it already.

16.5% ABV. Still opaque purple in color. A touch of heat on the nose followed by pepper and jammy red fruits. The heat subsided after 30 minutes or so making me think the wine may have benefited from a brief decanting. The wine is powerful and concentrated. Cherries, cassis, raspberries and licorice. The finish lingers for almost a minute. This wine is not claret in style but is jammy, ripe, hedonistic and downright delicious.

Big hit of fruit on the first taste. Pepper, dark red fruit, full bodied and long finish. A little hot which shows to me that this is getting near the end of its life. However well integrated and as good a Zin as you can wish for.

Hot, medicinal/turpentine nose, medium-bodied mixed berry fruit, very smooth and soft, showing much bottle age, licorice and tobacco flavors, fully integrated fruit and tannins, finish falls short, lacks freshness and intense forward fruit which is typical of young Turley Zins, not bad for an aged Zin, lots of character although not my style

Alcohol was not off-putting. Cork almost broke but there was no bad cork taste in the wine. Overall the wine was very enjoyable and fun and definitely not too soon to drink. It was not the great experience I expected from this vineyard and producer.

Part of the b-day line up so no formal note, just some impressions. Still very youthful, plenty of spices, bold overipe fruit, and with a huge amount of alcohol protruding. I glanced at the label after trying it and was shocked to see the ABV was listed as 16.5% [wow.gif] Not my type of wine, and it seemed to be a pretty even split of those that loved it and those that didn't. Pop 'n pour. I can see why this is at the top of the Turley lineup. Beautiful brambly zin aromas on the generous nose. On the palate, big classic zin flavor, with excellent balance and really not the big fruit bomb that some Turley's can be. Good length on the finish. Fabulous wine.

Initially, the alcohol (can't recall the percent, perhaps 16.3?) on the nose was obvious and detrimental. Not decanted but drank it over a 3 hour dinner. Marked improvement in the nose with nice spicy/peppery/black fruit aromas. Full bodied, some tannins noticeable but quite smooth. Alcohol not detected. Long finish, unusual for me with a Zin. One of the best Turley Zins I've ever had.

One of the best zains I have had in a while. For me, right in the zone with vibrant cherry, plum and a hint of spice. The forest floor rose from the glass and integrated beautifully with the fruit. Finish was a solid minute. The extra year or so since the last one has added weight and depth. Wish I had more. This is Turley in its shining moment.

Excellent wine with a great long finish, 30 seconds plus. Bouquet was powerful. Fruit was concentrated and still around for a six year Zin. Alcohol not evident so it was very well integrated. I have had other Hayne's before as well as Earthquakes and Ueberoths, and this ranked right up there in terms of quality and sheer drinking pleasure. Went well with brownies (and not so much the homemade pizza). Still a great drink. I did decant it and I think it definitely benefited from it.

This wine was waiting to be open after June 2009. It has arrived. Ready to drink right out of the bottle and perfect balance after 1 hour sitting open. Best at low temp. Deep color, full nose, coats the mouth with fruit and flavor you don't want to let go. lots of carmel, cherry, and mystery. This wine goes with food but I prefer it with conversation only.

Definitely "different". Not what I recall from prior Hayne tastings, but not VA. Too much "noise" for my wife, and maybe not the best way to accentuate the food in your dinner, but quite interesting in it's own right. Just pour a glass and explore!

This is in the drink-now category. Definite raisin notes when first opened, a bit hot, but lots of big fruit yumminess. Enjoyed with some light tapas--a little Beecher's Flagship, sardinillas, and olives. Was good with the strong flavors, but not really a food-oriented wine.

Best Zinfandel I've ever had. First class. Beautiful ripe fruit bowl, smooth, high alcohol but with a 1-hour decant it wasn't an issue. The wine of the night vs. other Turley's and other Zin's. I heard this vineyard is the best of the Turley's and now I know why.

Every sip of this, my first Hayne, surprised me. I thought between sips I could imagine / picture / taste it, but then the next sip would have some beautiful deep personality element I was still getting to know. In the end, though, a little fatiguing and boozy. Maybe should have chosen a cooler night.

classic Turley... raspberry, blackberry, acid and tannins (really!), hot. Great mouthfeel, almost syrupy. Dark like motor oil, it stained the glass every time I swirled.
Have to say that after finally opening one of the Haynes, I think I'm moving past the style. Just a little too over the top for me, and would have been better served as an ice cream topping. It was paired perfectly with a pork chop from Magnolia Grill that had a chipotle/baby shrimp topping, but for $80 a bottle, I'm having trouble justifying it.

Nice red fruit nose with mixed spice. Has pretty round soft upfront fruit, but hits you with some acid and a noticeabley alcoholic finish. Still nice fruit, but it is dense and plodding. Alcohol becomes more noticeable as it approaches room temp and the wine gets very heavy. This just does not have the complete package of the best Carlisles, not even close.

Drank this after a 2004 Kosta Browne Cohn Vineyard (2004) and it didn't quite stand up. Other than the difficult comparison, it was a delicious zin with loads of dark fruit and cinnamon.

Inky purple in color. Big nose of blackberries, plums and other "black" fruits. Very ripe, but surprisingly not to the point of being sweet. Low-acid and accessable. Alcohol is reasonably concealed by the masses of fruit. Great with pizza.

Not decanted. This was the last bottle in our wine tasting of the night, so my palate was probably overloaded at this point. A bit alcoholic on the nose, with raspberry aromas. Lots of pepper and raspberry flavors on the palate. Seemed a bit disjointed -- the tannins and the heat seemed to be present, which wasn't the case in previous Turley Haynes I've had. Probably should have let it settle for a while longer. Very full-bodied and long finish. Not the best showing for this bottle.

Wow! Spectacular wine. Drank 3 bottles off the list at Fifth Floor in San Francisco. Heady aroma of red fruits, some spice, and hints of something earthy. On the palate this was a big wine, but pretty well balanced. Raspberry and cocoa, sweet tannins, and a long finish. Blew away the Dogtown we had the same night.

I thought between sips I could imagine / picture / taste it, but then the next sip would have some beautiful deep personality element I was still getting to know. In the end, though, a little fatiguing and boozy. Maybe should have chosen a cooler night.

Fantastic zinfandel. Big, but very well balanced. Very impressive and worth the tariff for this special vineyard bottling.

No formal note, but this was a great example of the Hayne bottling. Rich, lush, but plenty of Zin character. It definitely tasted like Turley, being super-ripe, but it had nice backbone and acidity.

This is an outstanding Turley. Complex Zinfandels like this are to find.

Great nose of black fruits. Wonderfully integrated. Chewy dark fruit with undertone of cinamin spice. Pepper and tanins to close. Heat not prominent for me.

($75) The Week of Zinfandels: A big Zinfandel with strong raisin fruit aromas along with a touch of meaty soy sauce. Full flavored, and slightly more savory than many Zins. Pretty good.

classic Turley... raspberry, blackberry, acid and tannins (really!), hot.

Not the best showing for this bottle.

wow, what a nose. starts as strawberry jam and evolves to stawberry rhubarb, rasberry, blueberry with some underlying coffee. similar profile in the mouth without any heat.nice long finish. lip smackin good! I have had about 1/2 dozen turley's thinking they were good but not worthy of the hype. this wine changed my mind. this is what zins are all about.

Really delicious. Deep, dark, full but not at all over the top. A bit restrained on day 1, great on day 2.
