  • Certainly fully mature now. Drinking well, with elegance over fruit.

  • Lovely. Sweet core. Velvet. Dried cherry and tobacco. Very good. In a very great place today. Perfect balance bodes well for the future. Was expecting more VA given how over the top this was in its youth. Essence of Grenache.

  • Cork and ullage were good, but wine was cooked.

  • Not to offend the gummy bear aficionados, but this is far from over the hill. Purchased on release and perfectly cellered, the wine is pretty textbook maturing granache with some nice barnyard, strawberry, wet basement and spicy mourvèdre notes. The syrah pulls up the acid profile and leaves you with a well rounded, approaching maturity CdP. It's not terrific, but its very pleasurable. Another bottle will hold for 5 more.

  • Dinner at Home; 8/1/2015-9/11/2015 (Fremont, CA): Bretty, red spiced cherry; palate is light bodied, red fruit, again, lots of brett, slight vanilla; medium finish. An interesting combination of old world brett (a bit too much, and I like brett), along with some new world oak. 86

  • Tasted vis-a-vis the Beaucastel 99, this really shows the charm of Grenache; there is a core of sweetness here, that brings the wine through and the obnoxious modernity, that is Janasse, is gone. To me, this just looses out to the B.m to a more feminine palate, I am not so sure tonite ...

  • Light in color, fully mature, or even a little bit past fully mature as the fruit is slowing fading. The wine offers soft, bright cherries and is slightly herbaceous in character. This requires consumption sooner than later.

  • alcohol front in center on this wine. similar dynamic to this wine when prior bottle was consumed 5 or so years ago but with age other elements have faded more to the background making alcohol appear even more prominent. I like Christoph a lot but struggle w style of his wines.

  • Initially quite elegant and a pleasant surprise vis-a-vis the 2000. I bought these 99's on the (very) cheap, and the vintage has consistently (for other domains ad well) been a pleasant surprise. Janasse really needs time to loose the modern outfit, but the elegance is here, certainly, the wine is light in it's feet with red berries and garrigue and a smooth style with well integrated tannin - wonderful wine. Preferable to the 2000 until food arrives on the table and the mere power of the 2000 wins. Brought the rest of this 99 to Krimimesse 2014, and it was essentially dead - drink up, I think, is the safe advice. Dinner at home and with HDN in Horsens.

  • Boekenhoutskloof Winemakers dinner. (@ Bottles; Sas van Gent, Netherlands): Two persons brought this wine. The sommelier decided to open and pour both. Bottle 2: Like the other bottle, but the wine was more mature and the bitterness more evident. (We tasted both bottles blind beside each other.)

  • Boekenhoutskloof Winemakers dinner. (@ Bottles; Sas van Gent, Netherlands): Two persons brought this wine. The sommelier decided to open and pour both. Bottle 1: Mature cassis in the bouquet, some earth and garrigue. On the palate ripe and sweet fruits, chocolate and tobacco. Good acidity and soft tannin. Beautiful wine.

  • There's something charming about this wine, which I've held since release. It's been many years since I bought anything from this producer, because of Janasse's modern style and ripeness. This wine showed plenty of fruit still, mulled and worn, compote-like, not dried out, more red/brown in tone, baked plums and sweet prune mixed with spice and garrigue, and an absence of tannin. It's soft and warm but has plenty of length on the palate, and is rather engaging in its secondary complexity. A couple nights later, out of a sealed .375, the second half of this bottle showed impressive freshness, with the mulled/compote fruit now showing an inner core of bright young dark fruit. I guess that this might make a good case that Janasse CdP needs a decade or more in the cellar to drop its usual assault of ripeness and "gobs" of fruit, to the extent that this '99 (not a ripe vintage as far as I can recall), ever showed that blowsy profile. In any event, a nice mature CdP that still has plenty of appeal left.

  • Only took brief notes on this but it struck me as being much more evolved (both in appearance and taste) and lighter than I thought it would be... in mag this was a bit past its prime so 750s of this need to be consumed I suspect. Very savory and herbal... "excellent" wine though.

  • Mostly done and gone. At this point the wood cuts the back palate short. Its meaty and rich but not in a way I like, its 4-square and finishes dry w wood tannins. Nose is pruney and meaty. Acidity correct. Passable maybe but not worth the money for sure.

  • Tasted blind. Dark ruby. On the nose stewed fruit, cloves. Seems mature, maybe a little over the hill. Notes of white pepper and hung meat. A bit overdone and soupy.

  • Needs standing and decanting – big, sludgy sediment. A corked bottle a few days ago; but this one is clearly OK from the little shot of bright fruit in the middle of an initially jammy nose. That’s gone at drinking an hour later. Nose now offering a sheaf of freshly cut drought-herbs – certainly thyme, possibly sage – which come with some heat… and not a great deal else. A v surprising palate for Janasse – so light you might almost call it elegant and confuse it with aged Burgundy. It’s relatively neutral though – little acidic energy left. Perhaps this was an ambitious attempt to express a cooler vintage, which has proven a mistake. They made a different choice in the even cooler ’97 vintage, opting for extraction, with gave the wine a rare tactile quality throughout its life. The messy rim worries me too – this is past its best. It’s thin, thinning, and lacks the concentration for positive evolution from here. A decent garrigue-fix and a merry glass of effective alcohol; but this is Janasse V V! The corked bottle showed a similar palate, so although I’d like to be wrong about all this, I fear I’m not. 88 to 89, 89.

  • Decanted and served right from the cellar. One still detects some of the very ripe (overdone??) Janasse-style, but there is also a bresh of freshness that keeps this wine alive. Alcohol, sweetnes is evident, but not overwhelming. It is certainly very far from peaking, I will keep my remaining bottles and hope to get even more pleasure from them in 3-5 years.

  • deep dark purple, black fruits on the nose with a touch of glycerin, in the mouth this is a big cassis and boysenberry fruit bomb, young, sweet and a bit over the top for me
perhaps needs some time but not sure

  • Chateauneuf du pape Blind tasting (My Home): Decanted about an hour and kept getting better along the evening.
Tight, pure dark fruits along leather, garrigue, charcoal/tar and a touch of licorice. Big but extremely balance, med acidity with a very nice soft texture.
Some red fruits appeared on the palate and the finish is very pleasant. No heat or over ripeness sensation.
    This needs serious time.

  • (In inferior glassware at Provence in Carrboro).....drinking well with a lush richness and only moderate tannins...

  • Deep purple/red color. Aromas of black fruits, licorice and a touch of leather and earth. Ripe, nicely extracted fruit in the mouth with excellent structure and depth. The tannins of this surprisingly youthful wine were well-integrated and softened noticeably after about 30 minutes. A delicious wine to drink with my partners at a terrific luncheon at Matyson Restaurant.

93 pts

  • Bricking but a deep burgundy, almost black at the core. Very dense, briary, aromas of tar and scorched earth. To me a clumsy wine and rather harsh, not just on the nose but also in the mouth with a bitter, aggressive feel. [Day 2]: Improved quite a bit overnight under nitrogen, enough to convince me that the wine still deserves the 89 point score I gave it last time (I'm nowhere near the 92/93 range some folks are using). But more suple and that harshness has faded away. Still a bit overdone, a bit hot, a bit unbalanced. But way improved. If you open it: decant and let this baby breath!

  • '99 Janasse- CDP VV & '01 Boxler- Riesling, Sommerberg with Asher (Asher's.): Another wine sporting a beautiful nose. Fresh and intense raspberry kirsch, meat/beef jerky and baking spices with a touch of cardamom. Truly lovely aromas. While pleasant on the palate with a somewhat similar flavor profile, it's not as enjoyable in the mouth as it was on the nose. A little under stuffed given how much is going on aromatically and there's a distracting bitter burnt rubber aspect that Asher thought manifested itself more like burnt grease. The wine shows the coarseness and earthiness that's pretty typical of many '99's. Would be better with some greasy meat. Solid B+.

  • Hospice du Rhone; 5/3/2007-5/6/2007 (Paso Robles, CA): Dark, earthy fruit and some leather on the nose. Nice, silky mouthfeel, with great earthiness. Some gravel. Chunky. Very nice, not outstanding.

  • 1999 continues to delight me as a really good "intermezzo" vintage to drink while biding time and waiting for '95s and vintages from '98 onward in the southern Rhone to come around. This was one of the best examples yet. Dark hued, shockingly good concentration. While the fruit is sound, the nose is dominated by a black olive tone that seems to be present in many '99 Chateauneufs (Vieux Donjon, Clos des Papes, and Usseglio Cinquentennaire have all shared this attribute). Nothing green, stemmy, or underripe about it though. Long, round, authentic, and satisfying, probably just at the beginning of a good stage for drinking.

  • Lovely nose of elegant grenache fruit, perfume, oak not obtrusive. After initial nice attack, finish a little short and rusty. Will plan to retry w dinner in several hours. In fact, several hours after decanting finish much longer and marred only by unresolved tannins. Continued ripe and firm until drained with dinner, about 10 hours after opening. Still young, and decant long time if drinking anytime soon.

  • Black/ruby. Brooding nose of plums, garrigue, toffee. Rich fruit framed by serious tannic structure, but the palate is marred by a slightly cooked/oxydized flavor, as if the bottle had been left open over night. May resolve with time; give this another few years in the cellar and try agan around 2008 or 2009.

  • Dynamic, gorgeous, perfumed nose of dried dirt, smoke, dried cranberries, and this tinge of sweetness that makes the mouth water - the earthiness becomes much more pronounces with air...medium-bodied, medium-structure, tasty, bitter chocolate, deep red fruits, almost black fruit and a fair dose of oak to accompany - more than I expected. Interesting at this point, but not provocative. I would have liked to see more complexity.

DAY 2 - Still red fruit on the nose, with a portish type note coming through...definitely put on some weight overnight, tannins are showing through heavier as well. The wine has mainly gotten darker and murkier.
