A whole 7 years ( Papies 93) since we had this and continues to be in very good form albeit probably a touch less exciting than our note from 2014 ( It could be very well be us...) Very polished , elegant wine, lacks a bit of depth at times and not as expressive as we would have liked it but was for sure worthy millesime. 92-93

(Disgorged in winter of 2011, Chardonnay (Avize 36%, Chouilly 7%) and Pinot noir (Dizy 35%, Aÿ 15%, Mareuil sur Aÿ 7%), Dosage 3,5 gr/l) Lovely maturity on the nose showing butterscotch, minerals and lime citrus sweetness. Still showing a youthful acidity with red apples and opens up with more mature notes of butterscotch and with a smoothing lime zest bitterness on the finish. This is drinking deliciously right now and should keep for many years to come.. (Best 2017-2037)

Broad, rich and explosive, with slightly oxidative notes, notes of verveine, some citrus, honey, also some spices. Full.bodied and dense, with medium+ acidity and excellent length. A super, perfectly mature wine that was today lsightly broader and richer than the 1996 tasted next to it. Showing even better on day 2, with a slight sweetness (from ripeness, not dosage). Lovely.

My previous TN largely holds. (too) Oxidative/reductive - initially a real brute but it was a bit better with air and also after drinking a Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee 08 and revisiting the Jacquesson again later. I conclude again that I am not a fan of vintage Jacquesson style. If I had another bottle I would probably hold it for 10 years and see what it becomes.

Quite frankly a bit of a disappointment. I don't know why, but I fail to find pleasure in Jacquessons vintage champagnes. Quite odd that, given how much I tend to like their NV champagne, which is a truly brilliant offering. Now I have not had that many Jacqessons vintage champagnes, but the ones I did have were a 1990 around 5 years ago (my favorite champagne vintage and this showed well, although not amazing), then a 1996 Jacquesson late disgorgement a few years back (which was slightly oxidized) and now this 2002. This bottle had a fairly muted nose, on the positive side there was one theme I got - it displayed admirable minerality both on the nose and palate. I like minerality. But I was missing any sort of fruit. I gave this one straight on PnP, then gave it air, tried it cooler and a bit warmer - it just never grew on me. Given the vintage and producer really strange. Weirdly it tastes as if the grapes were not fully ripe, which is odd for the 2002. Can't recommend based on this showing. I think Jacquesson would have been better advised to use a higher dosage (this is 3.5g/l).

(Disgorged in winter of 2011, Chardonnay (Avize 36%, Chouilly 7%) and Pinot noir (Dizy 35%, Aÿ 15%, Mareuil sur Aÿ 7%), Dosage 3,5 gr/l) Yellow colour starting to turn golden, with very fine and tiny bubbles in a lovely and majestic way. This is at first a bit muted, but in the glass opens up showing a wonderful mixture of minerals, citrus and mandelic flowers. Naturally the oak is present too, and can be felt in the structured and intensive palate that lasts forever on the palate. Perfectly balanced finish with a crispy and fruity finish. Wow, this has really evolved nicely over the last couple of years since last time I opened a bottle. Still showing a strong development in the glass and feels like it can evolve even further! Best 2017-2032.

Golden, copious pinprick bubbles, vigorous mousse. Smelled of summer fruit, wood, toasted bread, peach and autolysis. Tasted of red apple, peach, a touch of wood, breadcrust / biscuit / autolysis. Overall a brilliant bottle! Dry, with a syrupy touch up front. Delicate and refined.

Golden staw in color. Tiny tiny bublles in a rapid central stream. Nose of lemon, brioche, dired apricot. Inital mouth feel is medium body with freshness and bright acidity. Somewhat dry but with a nice lingering finish. I really don't think there is much time left on this bottle. While it reminded me of the Gosset millesime 2000 it didn't have the bright freshness. Nice but maybe after being open awhile it will improve. For now it is good but not worth the 100 euro price point.

Wines tasted at Eriks vinbar (Eriks vinbar, Stockholm): Golden colour. A mature and pleasant nose with slightly old yellow apples, classical bready notes, some gunpowder smoke and toasted notes including coffee. Rather noticeable development. Dry on the palate with ripe fruit notes, apples of mixed colour, good acidity, noticeable minerality, as well as some pepper and other spice notes. Rather ready in its development, but can take a lot more time in the cellar. 91 p. From a magnum.
Compared to previous encounters, there are now more development and a more typical Jacquesson style.

Saturday night at The Papies (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): A pretty solid rich wine with a dark colour and full of ripe notes. Felt a lot younger than a 2002 and was even more mature than the 2000 we tried just after it (Papies 92 on that). Almost a caramel hue on the colour, full on ripe fruit aromatics, toasty, yeasty profile. Very rich on the palate and round and almost feels its best to enjoy now and to be honest it drinks so nice at the moment that just go for it. Some more acidity could have helped. 93-94

A private dinner (Restaurant De Burgemeester *, Linschoten, Netherlands): Full colour, fine mousse; rich nose, lovely evolution, candied fruit, nuts and coffee; rich and weighty palate, really shows the power of its vintage, no lack of freshness however; excellent length. Drinking very well, no reason to keep this very long.
Nose of hazelnut, stonefruits. Creamy. Palate is very smooth. Has flavors of nuts and stonefruit (Apricot, Peach). A little toasty. Has mild notes of honey. Overall, very nice bottle of champagne. Can and should hold for much longer.

Brian's 40th (Park Palace, Grand Park Hotel): This was lovely on the night, standing toe-to-toe against a very solid 1999 Pol Roger Winston Churchill. The Jacquesson had a beautifully fragrant, almost intense nose, with all sorts of interesting aromas, from fresh lemons to preserved limes and figs skin shading into riper scents of prune and dried apricots, with a nice drift of floral notes floating along behind. The palate was very powerful, with rich, fleshy flavours of lemons and limes, and more of those stone fruited prune and apricot notes first picked up on the nose. This was really quite voluptuous, making the Winston Churchill seemed comparatively sparer and less giving, especially on the attack and midpalate. However, past all that flesh, there was also a lovely spine of acidity and fine mousse that ran through the Jacquesson, giving it a very firm, focused feel all the way into a big finish, where little biscuity notes lingered over a lemony flavours and a nice bed of stony mineral. Like so many 2002s, this was a very full, generously giving early-drinker. Even then, with its superb balance and large-scale flavours, it will still need a few more years to come together completely. Very nice indeed.

Some Jacquesson Champagnes...: The 2002 Jacquesson & Fils Champagne Millésimé is medium golden in colour with an almost oxidative nose accompanied with breadiness and toast. There's also underlying hints of nectarines and stone fruits on the nose - some peaches and apricots that makes it rather attractive.
An entry of nuttiness on the mid-palate with tones of baked fruits surfacing alongside dried honey. Acidity comes up a little evidently towards the end. 89 for now, but too young to judge for sure (89-92).

This Champagne had a somewhat reversed development during the evening. It started off with a huge bouquet of yellow apples, nougat, toasted nuts and a some slightly oxidised notes, which was very nice indeed. A couple of hours later it became a even more sophisticated wine, fresher with more mineral and fresh green apple notes and with even more depth and balance. I´m sure this will age with beauty for several more years.

Champagne Jacquesson with Jean-Hervé Chiquet (Stockholm): Appearance: bright yellow, hints at gold Nose: yellow apple, ripe yellow fruit, noticeable herbal notes, honey, mineral, some toasted hazelnuts, some mature notes. Palate: powerful minerality, green apple, a hint of bitterness that is integrated with the minerality, high acidity, mineral in aftertaste. Still young on the palate. 90+ p.

Annual Champagne Tasting (Marquis Wine Cellars): Retailer tasting, brief notes. Huge nose with tons of yeasty toast aromas up front, followed by sweet pear, red apple skins, and a hint of candied ginger. Big on the palate as well, displaying yogurt, toast, baked red apples, tart lemon juice, and orange zest. Tons of drying acidity pairs well with the firm mousse. Unlike some of the notes below this bottle was showing quite young, and in need of plenty of time in the cellar to come together. Very good+

Joyce's Birthday - Grand Marque Champagnes & Grand Cru Burgs (Keystone, Stanley Street): This was very nice. Rather advanced for a 2002 and already drinking quite well, it started out with really expressive nose, full of fresh, lively aromas, with ebullient notes of white flowers and a nice earthiness floating around a core of kumquats and brown pears, with little touches of white meat and bread at the side. There were just the tiniest oxidative shades in there to make up a very interesting bouquet. The palate was very nice too. Pretty rich and powerful, it had plenty of fleshy white fruit - apples and pears I thought – scored though by an earthy, stony minerality and a lovely lick of spice. While it lacked the precise definition of the 2002 Jacquesson Dizy Corne Bautray on the same flight, this was had a very broad, generous palate for such a young Champagne. Good, longish finish too, with mouthfilling notes of fleshy, kumquaty fruit. Really rather advanced, I doubt this will age all that well in the extreme long term. It was nice for drinking on the night though.

Lieux-Dits Champagnes from Jacquesson vs Selosse (Stockholm): Bright yellow colour. In the nose yellow fruit, hint of herbal notes, some honey, citrus, initially a candy-like note of fruit essence that subsides somewhat after some time. After a while a certain smoke note, bread and brioche also appear. On the palate pronounced minerality with a "mineral water" impression, yellow fruit, high acidity, medium bodied. Still young. 89+ p.

Same colour and nose as Jacquesson 733 (light straw yellow, intense toasted breaded nose) also tasted; more dense and powerful, more depth, more sweet, still fresh and elegant, also feminine; slightly better than the 733 NV, however, given the price differential 733 is certainly much better value, at least at this age

Very good+

Smells of prunes. Rich, broad and oaky in the mouth. An easy drinking and pleasant champagne.

A bit surprised that it is so mature already. Not as elegant as expected either. A bit rough. Earthy.

Some toast and dried fruit on the nose. On the palate dry, developed, showing flavors of nuts, dried fruit and little toast.Very nice.

Weighty heady with sappy grip. A little spa provencal flowers. A bit wispy smoky. Nice. Applely notes. Broader and more generous developed palate

Very ripe on the nose, honey, wax, rose, almost a bit perfume. Taste is dry with medium+ body and very fresh acidity, complex, taste is the same as on the nose. The finish is a bit short, otherwise a great champagne!

Very fine and subtle mousse, comes across as a mature Blanc de Blancs with buttery and caramel tones with typical minerality although the percentage of Pinot Noir is very high. Will improve.
