Scant fruit moves directly into a nutty, brioche-heavy core with a good finish on acidity. Nice mouthfeel. One for those who like a mid-palate-driven champagne.

We've had a few of these 2007 base in a row showing over the hill, or falling apart within a short time after opening, so much so that we now put two bottles in to chill when we want one, just to increase our odds of getting a good one. This bottle was firmly back on track and on par with my note of 8/21/2020 - mature for sure, but with none of the bruised apple juice or bitter elements that the dead ones have been displaying. Plenty of vibrant energy and depth, even freshened up with some air. Given the 6 or so faded 07 Murgiers and having recently had a listless and flat 2008 Boulard Les Rachais, I am having my doubts about how this producer's wines age in general, and am disinclined to chase them, though I'd love to be proven wrong.

Same disgorgement and stats as previous bottles, and very much consistent with those. This purchase of Boulard from a French source a few years back when the Euro was near parity is probably the single best score I've ever made. These have aged beautifully, now showing all the nutty, slightly spicy, savory pastry notes I adore, while still maintaining plenty of vigor and mature fruit. This particular bottle actually needed 20 minutes or so of air to fully flesh out. It just shows what rewards can be had from aging high quality NV champagnes for a few years. This combination of age and quality would cost a pretty penny now, if one could find it at all.

Again this is terrific. I had forgotten it was Pinot Meunier but that is evident from a good sniff. Showing all that stone fruit. Very tasty. Light bodied yet quite expressive. Not deep or dense. It's not going to compete with big boys but in it's realm it's very nice. Interesting labeling. It seems to indicate 2014 but I cannot really find any reference where they call this wine a vintage bottle. It's on the back label among the details and not on the front where you would expect the vintage to be. Another interesting thing among the details is they call out the "apogee" for this wine in a vertical statement next to everything else. 2020-2021 for the curious. I hope this becomes more available in the states. I really dig it. Especially for the price.

Disgorged in September, 2015, from 2012 base with 30% 2010/11. Boulard is one of my favorite houses, along with Prevost, Collin, Vilmart, Chartogne-Tailllet, Suenen and Savart. While current vintages of this cuvée are now brut nature, this bottling was an extra brut. Not sure of the dosage, but I would guess it is pretty close to zero. I have a soft spot for Meunier, and this is a lovely expression of the grape. Dry and crisp, with some marzipan and poached pear on the nose, and a citrusy midpalate. Not the most complex, but still lovely.
Expressive nectarine fruit in a sweet-tart sort of way. Not that the wine was really sweet or tart enough to note. Terrific fruit expression. Not as lean and minerally as my last go. Could be a different disgorgement. Could be my attitude. Tasty wine. Consistent over two nights.

Showing a bit darker in color than our last bottle, with maybe not quite the tension. Still a lovely and appealing champagne, walking a perfect line between fresh and clean and nutty and broad. I like the 2015 disgorgement/2007 base of this wine very much and think it's got some upside ahead of it. Dosage level at 5g/L is perfect for me as well. A very pretty champagne, with surprising elegance at the price point.

2007 base, 2008 bottling, Jan 2015 disgorgement. This has been resting in the cellar for more than a year now and has benefited from the time. Lovely golden straw color, and fine but not aggressive bubbles. The nose is broad and beguiling, with plenty of nuttiness and brioche. In the mouth, it displays a rich, deep mouthfeel without being heavy, and comes off as nicely mature. Not a hint of sherry or apple cider that would lead me to think it's developing too fast. With some air, this actually tightened up in a good way, getting more refined and elegant. A little more developed, as expected, than last tasting, I now find this a rich and extremely delicious, easy-drinking champagne that packs a lot of punch for its price point. Happy to have bought in quantity and looking forward to opening this with regularity. Worth noting the excellent back label that gives bottling details. Bravo.

Developing on the nose with a medium(+) intensity. Upon opening it was a bit one-dimensional with mostly yeast and red apples. With air and rising temperature it develops into a big, expressive nose. Autolysis - nougat and toasted bread, mango, winter apple, baked strawberry, oak, roasted coffee bean, baking spice, vanilla and fennel seeds. Great nose with lovely complexity.
Dry on the palate with a medium(+) acidity and medium body. The mousse is delicate and creamy. Medium(+) intensity with flavors of tropical fruits, strawberry tarte, baked apple, oak, vanilla, nougat, baking spice, coffee and nuts. The finish is medium.
This was the second time tasting this wine and it keeps impressing me. It is drinking lovely today but has potential for further developing. Great QPR at €38 (355SEK).

Oddly enough, tasting the Extra Brut and Brut Nature, I find this the breadier of the two, with the Brut Nature showing more fruit...I would have thought it would be the other way round, but maybe it's also a matter of where these two blends are in their development.

Pinot Meunier (70%) and Pinot Noir (30%). A non-interventionist Champagne vinified in old 228, 600 and 2000 liter oak casks with indigenous yeasts. The base wine is from the vintage 2007 (70%) with some reserve wines from 2006 and 2005. Bottled 4th of June 2008 and disgorged in 4th of July 2014, resulting in 73 months of aging with the lees. Dosage 5 g/l.
Intense, quite deep yellow color that speaks volumes about the aging regime of the wine. Really expressive and almost explosive, characterful and attractive nose with aromas of whipped cream, browned butter, wool, cream and apple notes that remind me of Calvados; underneath, supporting nuances of bitter almonds, tosca, some smoke and a hint of marengue. Very unusual and very lovely. On the palate the wine is dry, but surprisingly full-bodied and concentrated, further emphasized by big, creamy mousse. Rich and ripe flavors of ripe citrus fruits, browned butter, beeswax, roasted almonds, some baked apple and a surprisingly pronounced undercurrent of stony and slightly bitter minerality. The complex and persistent aftertaste is powerful, clean and precise with nuances of citrus fruits, ripe apple, stony minerality, some honey, little hints of chewy red fruits and a hint of roasted nuts.
Incredibly delicious, complex and elegant Champagne that stole away my heart at the first sniff. Despite being Extra Brut, the wine does not feel excessively austere or prohibitively dry, but instead very smooth and balanced with great precision. Truly a hedonistic bubbly. The structure promises great cellaring potential. Highly recommended.
Medium plus intensity nose of yeast and citrus. Palate is dry but possibly has noticeable sugar. Medium plus acidity level with citrus, red and green apples on the palate. The finish is quite long but could do with a little more acidity for our taste.

A private dinner (Restaurant De Nederlanden *, Vreeland, NL): Same wine, same place. No detailed notes this time. A wonderful grower Champagne from the area of Saint-Thierry, made from 70% Pinot Meunier and 30% Pinot Noir, fermented in oak, 5% dosage. An excellent aperitif and an exceptional value.

Harvest of 2007, disgorged 2015/02/20.
The wine has a medium intensity, lemon color.

Un superbe champagne pour clore cette belle dégustation.
Patisserie,droit et sec...
À ce prix là, pourquoi se priver.
Avec une belle tarte aux pommes ou tatin , cela pourrait faire des ravages.

A private dinner (Restaurant De Nederlanden *, Vreeland, NL): Identical to my previous note. This has been the house champagne of restaurant De Nederlanden for quite a while now and it is easy to see why. Distinctive style, fresh and rich, appetising and gourmand.

A private dinner (Restaurant De Nederlanden *, Vreeland, NL): The usual blend of 70% Pinot Meunier and 30% Pinot Noir from the Vallée de la Marne, fermented in old oak, malo completed, bâtonnage every 10/12 days, unfined, base vintage 2008. Rich but not ruddy colour; aromatic nose with ripe fruit, flowers and Pinot Meunier spice; rich but energetic on the palate, mouthfilling but more mineral and fresher than I remember from previous renditions of this wine, lovely balance; very good flavours and length. Impeccably made.

Robe jaune avec des reflets cuivre, nez sur la groseille, bouche puissante sur la groseille et la noisette. Manque de complexité par rapport à d’autres bouteilles de ce même champagne

Fruit from the Vallée de la Marne, vinification in oak, malo complete, regular batonnage, base vintage 2007. A forward, broad Champagne, with lots of ripe Meunier fruit and touches of citrus and flowers.

This was just delicious on day 2. Some yeastiness joined the tart pear and yellow apple, making for a nicely complex yet refreshing wine.
I love the info on the back label. 70% Pinot Meunier, 30% Pinot Noir. 30% from 2005 and 2006, remainder 2007. Disgorged 18 March 2011.

Initially a bit toasty, it settled down after a bit and showed some interesting orange peel character and a fine mousse. Not as austere as some extra brut/non-dosé Champagnes, it had plenty of body and a good mouth feel.

Très bon champagne, de belle facture comme souvent chez F. Boualrd.
Un poil trop dosé à mon goût, mais en accompagnement du dessert, il a été parfait.

Surprisingly good champagne. Bright fruit, with a mineral edge. Can feel its red wine roots, but has a pleasing soft spot midpalate. Terrific balance and was a delight with home made pizzas. Not complex or compelling, but boy, did this put a smile on everyone's face.
