2010 Château Calon-Ségur

  • This wine is the most expressive of St. Estephe terroir I’ve ever experienced. Was even better the following day. Will improve with more age. Also, cassis, Cabernet spice and exotic oak. Not particularly rich and jammy; but classic Bordeaux black fruits. A few lingering tannins; yet not excessive. To fully enjoy; I’d give it a 6 to 8 hr decant. Better yet, overnight

  • Freshness level one the nose and palate is just sublime & aromatic intensity off the charts. While the wine is powerful, it is not (too) dense & all about elegance. Some upside

  • Expressive, lovely nose with blackcurrant, cedar, vanilla, fine spices, leather and tobacco. Medium to full bodied and structured on the palate. Great intensity with waves of flavour. Finishes very long. Needs more time to flourish but so much promise.

  • Grand Jury du Vin - Republic of Georgia; 11/1/2023-11/9/2023 (Republic of Georgia then stopover in Paris and Dijon): Wine 1 - Red fruit, bell pepper, silky, bright acidity, fine tannins and medium finish. One of the less concentrated wine and a bit straightforward.

Afterthought: This is a typical Calon Segur, i.e. classic but a bit straightforward.

  • Had this at a Bordeaux tasting, just a quick note to record my impression of the quality. Clearly too young but I believe this will be a knock-out wine in another 10 years.

  • Really good still needs a good decant though. Tannins pretty grippy early on.

  • Lovely nose with blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, leather, tobacco, prune, forest floor, mint.

Lovely pronounced palate with some spice coming through.

  • Clear deep garnet color. Clean pronounced nose of black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant, black plum), dried fruits (black prune), oak (vanilla, coffee, charred wood) and tertiary notes (earth, tobacco), developing. Dry, medium acidity, medium tannins, high alcohol, full body, pronounced flavors as above follow through, long finish. Outstanding. Can drink now, potential for some ageing. P/S: Overpowering oak.

  • Lots of sediment as I poured into decanter and let sit for 2+ hours. The nose really opened up.Blackcurrant coulis,Morello cherries, violets, some mint/menthal notes, cedar and graphite .. wonderful ! The medium-bodied palate is perfectly proportioned, very well balanced, grippy, elegant, very long, with perfect amount of acidity, but with still some unresolved tannins. This is still quite young and should continue to evolve nicely over the next 10 - 20 years !

  • Something quite restrained and regal about this wine. Still a bit of tannic grip but good to drink now. Long, subtle finish.

  • Bordeaux 2010 - 10 Years On - 61 Reds: Bordeaux 2010 after 10 years. 61 reds, mostly big names, tasted blind. Average score 92.1 and lower than the more open and charming 2009 vintage last year (93.4). A few observations: A) It’s not yet the harmonious, complex, classic, clean vintage. Especially the masculine appellations of the left bank need at least 5 more years to just open up, potentially longer to soften. B) Left bank trumps right bank thanks to less detectable alcohol, cleaner lines and the two best wines of the vintage (Mouton, Margaux). C) Pomerol shines bright with many strong wines which can all mask the high alcohol levels (best AOC slightly ahead of Pauillac). D) As in 2009, there are several right banks already past peak, incl. big names (Duffau Lagarosse, Ausone). All in all, 2010 is a very good vintage with pockets of greatness but today 2009 shows more open and hence complex. More information, top and worst 10 list, appellation rankings from five participants in the story link.

TN: Beautiful, singular nose with alpine herbs, fir tips along sweet red fruit. Intense and precise. Same picture on the palate with sweet, charming red fruit, strawberries, some herbs, slight earthy tones and subtle oak notes. Soft, mellowed structure with fine tannins and a well-integrated acidity. The downside here was that it was rather short. Still this is a good wine and in a beautiful first drinking window. The softness and red fruit character made me believe that we might be in Pessac and with a wine with a significant Merlot component in the blend, but apparently this is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon. Quite a stark contrast to the Cos d'Estournel and Montrose which we had blind next to it, which are both much darker, classic and very closed not charming at all.

Decanting: No extensive decant needed, I still would advise to at least give it 1 hour in the decanter.

    Group average: 94.0
Group rank: number 20 out of 61 wines
    (shared with Petrus, Trotanoy)

  • Grand Bordeaux 2010 ten years on tasting; 6/21/2020-6/22/2020 (Fribourg): Big Bordeaux 2010 2-day horizontal hosted by a private collector. My 3 main takeaways from the vintage were 1) more frequent perception of heat, 2) a slightly stronger left bank and a less consistent right bank, 3) while in general it is still too early to pop the 2010s, wine selection is key as some appear to be in decline already, especially on the right bank. The top wines were Mouton (99), Margaux (98) and VCC (98). The biggest positive surprise was Clos Manou (95). Biggest disappointment was Pape Clement (86). More details and complete tasting overview included in the tasting story.

    Tasting notes:
Ripe, red cherry, liqueur but also brambleberry and blueberry framed by a bit of barnyard. A bit earthy and green herbs too. Fruity palate with an element of sweetness, tannin with grip. This was a good overall package.

  • WOW - give it an hour in the decanter and this will be absolutely beautiful right now. I’m a big fan of aged Bordeaux but honestly - why wait when this is already so good? An amazing and complex classic modern Bordeaux with beautiful fruit notes and a deep structure.

  • At restaurant from coravin. Nose of blueberries and floral nectar. Front of red berries (cherries, raspberries), fading into blueberries and raisins. An outstanding Calon Segur.

  • From memory
Bottle opened and tasted 1h prior decanting, consumed over 4hrs
Early signs of maturity. Deep broad but unspecific.
Neither smell nor aftertaste very appealing or interesting.
I should have read my own note from 2017. Aromas similar to 2017-best case. More earth than fruit.
Long enough for a high quality Bordeaux.
    Maybe years from now?
    PMET 5/10

  • I decanted this for about an hour. The first wave of smell has yellow curry and olives, oak as well as super-fine mushrooms. The cast of fruit includes strawberries and currants, there is also some graindust sprinkles. With time (and with warming up by one or two degrees) intriguing notes of cherry and toffee emerge and dominate the nose.

On the palate it hits you with a big wet smooch of cherries – sumptuous and seductive texture all over. What follows is a high intensity interplay of bitter and sour notes. Balance is very good, with a notable but acceptable emphasis on acidity. The approach of the tannins rings in a long and deliciously chameleonic finish. Heavy movements here, like watching a theatre stage during the change of scenes, major motives being Kirsch and astringency. The taste resonates in the mind long after it ended - you automatically pour the next glass.

This is definitely excellent now and will definitely be intriguing in the future. I never tasted a Bordeaux that is so cherry-forward. It remains to be seen how this particular aroma survives the test of time.

  • Very young. Still strong after a 2hr double decant. Will wait 5 years for the next bottle

  • Very dark color in the glass, almost no meniscus. On the nose, a classic bouquet of cedar, leather, and black fruits. It is also classic on the palate, with good acidity and salinity backing up the flavors on the nose. The wine shows its youth on the finish, with strong, drying tannins.

  • Excellent, classy and terroir driven. Nearly black in colour. Belies that with lots of charm - blackberry, ash and cigar on nose. Palate with savoury feel, cassis and black olives. I wouldnt call this graceful but certainly on the elegant side and puts some of the over oaked BDX of that era to shame.

  • Abt 3 ys since last bottle. p&p
Black red with traces of maturity, very dense.
Loam black fruit iron, not the most complex nose. Tannins and acid at first dominant, after 30 minutes harmonization. Quite long, good mid palate.
Fine tannins. Taste isn't too complex as well, but the bottle was empty very fast, there must be a hidden quality. Excellent wine, not my favorite.
    Maybe better after 2020

  • Deep ruby rattan, violet reflexes, delicate edge whitening, very inviting bouquet, delicate noble woodiness, sweet oriental spices, ripe black berry fruit, a hint of caramel and honey, has everything in the bouquet what great wine needs. Complex, extra sweet, juicy black berry fruit, prominent tannins, mineral and persistent, shows a very good length, a classic Vin de Garde

  • Dark moreish cherries, chocolate and earthy pencil lead with sweet fine leather. Palate is full, satisfying and generous black blue and cranberry fruits. Potential.

  • Atlas Fine Wines 2010,2011,2012 Bordeaux Tasting (Vintners Hall, London): A very fine and elegant wine and put a smile on our face. Young indeed and firm but giving and very elegant, good rich fruit , balanced, good acidity, and firm tannin. Very very good and very happy to own a few.2020 onwards

  • MW Institute 2010 Bordeaux Tasting (Sydney, Australia): Extremely green and vegetable dominant, with extreme undergrowth character. The palate seems less under-ripe, there is some fruit power behind it that doesn't match what I got on the nose. Tried from two bottles with the same result. Has some interesting character but this was a poor showing.

  • Blending 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot produced a tannic, rich, powerful wine that expresses earth, forest floor, tobacco, blackberry, cassis and spice. Fresh, tannic and balanced, give this 10-15 years to soften, open and develop.

  • Calon-Ségur is one of the most interesting wines of the vintage.A dense purple color is followed by notes of kirsch, strawberries, licorice, flowers and graphite. The palate is full-bodied,silky,fresh and precise with very good depth and length.A unique combination of classical and modern style. This is capable of lasting 30-40 years.Fantastic value for money !

  • Tannic, vegetal at very beginning. At first it was stronger on nose rather than palate. I can sense there were more things hiding beneath, but cannot reach.

Glad it opened around 3 hrs. Acidic Coffee, rich berry, honey, chestnut cake. Creamy creamy!

After taste still shows this is young wine, surely it will develop.

  • Best wine I've tasted in a long time. I like it actually more already then the 2005 vintage. Intense dark fruit, very elegant, super finesse!

  • TN: Calon Segur vertical (Ripple Restaurant in DC): This is a classic claret from an excellent vintage. Fresh red fruit driven nose, very strong lead pencil and mineral notes, a hint of green and cedar. Excellent concentration, mineral and sweet tannins. This along the 09 will require minimum twenty years to reach the first stage of peak. I doubt that these will shut down really hard especially the 09. Both nicely representing the respective vintages.

  • 16 vintages of Calon Segur (Ripple Restaurant in Washington D.C.): When tasted en primeur, I found it a bit too austere but it has tamed itself... And yet, this is a wine that needs lots of time. Several participants at a dinner I organised for Ripple Restaurant in Washington D.C. voted this wine as the best for the future, among 16 vintages. The structure is there, the freshness and the substance. It is not just together yet. Potential for a higher score.

  • Unexpectedly floral and open. Despite some notes of oak, mocha, it had a classic backbone full of graphite, minerals with creamy dark fruit. Wonderful wine, and welcomingly a classy bordeaux.

  • „One Wine - Three Vintages“-Blind Tasting. Flight 8: Château Calon-Ségur. We tasted 1990, 2000 and 2010. The 1990 had aged very well and offered a mature nose with animally and medicinal notes. It was balanced and might even continue to improve for another three to five years. The 2000 offered a balanced palate, but was closed and seemed to be in a dumb phase. I would revisit it in five years. The 2010 was my favourite wine of the flight. Despite its youth and the youthful presence of oak the 2010 was balanced, creamy and super sexy! A great wine with great potential. In summary, I would drink the 1990 now and over the next five to ten years, would put the 2000 away and retry it in five years, and would try to get my hands on a twelve-case of the sexy 2010 for drinking mid- and long-term.
