Let me start off by saying that I am not really a merlot fan - but this was fantastic! Almost forgot about this in my cellar and when I came across it I thought it would be way past its prime, but I was totally wrong! After 45 minutes of air - this was singing with notes of black crushed pepper, dark fruit, charcoal embers, and a hint of pine. The palate is very smooth, the tannins are almost non existent at this point, nice acidity, good fruit on the palate, and a very nice finish. This totally surprised me how good it is. I would say this is in its prime drinking window right now! What a great bottle of wine!

Last bottle and surprisingly still drinking well. Previously I had thought it needed to be drank by 2019, but there are still enough tannins to hold it for a year or two.

Great nose of kirsch, cedar and strawberries. This oak and tannins are fully integrated at this point. An hour of decant is bringing out the full potential of the wine and this wine's quality is indistinguishable from the quality of Monte Bello. Considering the tannins are fully resolved now, I recommend drinking any remaining bottles in the year or so. There is no reason to wait!

Drinking great at the moment. Only 30 minute decant and it was ready to go. Didn't develop much after that. So I'm thinking drink within the next few years.

Deep dark center, red rim with only modest signs of age. Sweet, brandied cherries, licorice, subtle smoke and wood, brighter candied fruits, touch of pepper. Smooth, good darker red fruits - black cherries, black raspberries, modest tannins at this point (but still enough to support evolution for a few more years), tarragon, well integrated oak, touch of greenness, creamy long finish. Excellent merlot, drinking well now, will last another 3 to 5 years.

This is an intense Merlot. Dark purplish color. Nose has hints of leather. Full bodied on initial opening with the fruit becoming more prevalant an hour later. This will be in its prime drinking window for years to come.

Consistent with prior review - Dark ruby color with aromatic black cherry, blueberry, cassis and a kiss of vanilla, and baking spice aromas. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, balanced and elegant with black cherry, blueberry, cassis and vanilla flavors. Long finish. 14.2% alcohol.

Decanted 1/2 hour. Served with a big juicy T-Bone. Nose of plum, black cherry, cigar box, and hints of mocha. On the palate, red currants, plum, hints of tobacco. Finishes with sturdy tannins and bright acidity. Probably needs a couple more years but is delicious now. Drink with a short decant or continue to hold.

Wines At Our Table; Week of August 16 2015; 8/10/2015-8/16/2015: Dark ruby color with aromatic black cherry, blueberry, cassis and a kiss of vanilla, and baking spice aromas. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, balanced and elegant with black cherry, blueberry, cassis and vanilla flavors. Long finish. 14.2% alcohol.
The Merlot is made from two parcels planted at 1,300 and 2,000 feet of elevation in the Jimsomare property, which is now part of the Ridge estate. 2009 was their first bottling of a varietal Merlot since 1997. It underwent a whole-berry fermentation with native yeasts and was aged for twenty months in 75% new (25% year-old) air-dried American oak.

Excellent merlot. Huge dark fruits, especially black cherry, Jolly Rancher, mocha & pepper. Tannins still going strong. Wish we had a few more bottles as this can go easily a few more years. Nice.

Great nose of dark fruits, earth, oak and tons of cinnamon spice. Medium-bodied and just a bit lighter-weight than prior bottles. Lovely dark cherry flavors with spice, oak and earth. Bordeaux-like lean texture with great balance, and a smooth and seamless mouthfeel. Great intensity and depth of flavors, and a long finish. Not quite as rich and textured as prior bottles, but adds weight and depth with airtime.

No notes, but this was simply outstanding - very much like a prior bottle and perhaps even a bit better. Deep, layered, juicy, focused dark berry flavors along with some spice, earth and plenty of oak. As with prior bottles, this was structured more like a cabernet than a merlot and had plenty of "stuffing" to balance all the fruit. Medium to full body and concentrated with a rich, firm texture. I really, really like this wine. Great combination of richness and power that is only a small step below of the likes of Paloma, Pride, Plumpjack, etc.

Nose like a Howell Mtn. cabernet - dark and brooding. Concentrated flavors of dark cherry, charcoal, oak and spice with a medium body, lean texture and firm structure . Built a bit more like a cab than a merlot, with darker fruits, more concentration and more structure than I expected. I had hoped this might be a good alternative to a big, expensive cabernet and this fit the bill perfectly.

Note: this review refers to the Monte Bello vineyard bottling for 2009. This wine was terrific right out of the gate. None of the vegetal or green notes that Merlot sometimes brings, but also not over-the-top or over-oaked. At $30 quite a good value. I expected a classy wine from Ridge, but this exceeded my expectations.

On day 1, this did not distinguish itself particularly. It was flavorful, but I didn't take much notice.
Fast forward 2 days and Wow! My mind raced to Bordeaux, with the firm tannins, some violet and rose petals. The flavors seemed to float thru my mouth. Red fruit dominates. Both my wife and I thought this had changed dramatically for the better.
All the fruit is from the Monte Bello vineyard. 100% Merlot. 14.2 % ABV.
Give this a good decant or hold. Delicious.

Whoa. Lots going on here. The fruit is black, ripe, sweet, primary, and intense, just jumping out of the glass. The 75% new American oak sticks out a lot and is nowhere close to integrating. There is really impressive concentration and this is surprisingly extracted, but, unusually for CA merlot in my experience, there's also a lot of acid and tannic structure to support the fruit. This is impressive , especially for a declassified second wine, but it's also a bit disjointed at the moment and needs more time in bottle for the oak to integrate and everything to settle down. I'd imagine this would beat the pants off just about every similarly priced right bank Bordeaux in five years. Judging by the quality here, the 09 monte bello should be amazing.

Very dark red color. Aerated into glasses. Drank 1+ glass on two consecutive days. Nose is pleasant with mint, cassis, plum, vanilla, wood spices, light dry earth notes, and later blueberry. The palate is medium-full bodied with nice balance, moderate round tannins, black fruit with some blue fruit, medium finish with oak. This became more round and the oak mellowed over 24 hours. Still very young, but approachable. Decant at least 1-2 hours presently. 91 day one and 92 on day 2 and 3.

This 100% estate Monte Bello merlot, Ridge's first since 1997, was quite a treat for Thanksgiving dinner. The wine featured a core of cherry and blackberry fruit with notes of both white and dark chocolate, and spice. A hint of alcohol was noticeable, though eventually receded with air. Overall, this was very balanced wine; could use 1-2 years to tame the heat, though still immensely enjoyable now.

Opened & poured a couple of glasses which sat for an hour or so while we had some Champagne. Deep color. Oak dominates at first, giving way to chocolate, incense, black fruit and vanilla. Spice notes emerge even later on. Flavors of vanilla, brambly red fruit, new leather, cherry and chocolate. Long finish. Firm tannins require a healthy decant or some time in the cellar. Very enjoyable though.
