A very spicy nose of sandalwood and dried flowers. There are red and black fruits that have a crisp edge to them. The mid-palate is rich and detailed and there’s a hint of licorice. It builds and finishes with excellent mineral cut. Really good energy and balance.

Blood and iron aromatics, and richness of palate beyond expectation for 2011. When drunk side by side with 2012, the palate felt more smudged lacking the same high definition delineation. (7244/11177)

2011 Burg, we meet again. Pretty green, as expected (or feared), but also notes of bright red fruit, spice, and savoriness. Great persistence and density, but gave less pleasure than the other DRCs. The green faded a bit as the hours passed, but it's still mainly what I remembered. Tough vintage when lined up with 2002 and 2010. Needs way more time, if that’s even the answer, so no point to check in on it yet.

Very closed bottle, completely shut down upon opening. Dark ruby colour with great intensity and luminosity. First nose is all stems, giving off herbaceous and balsamic whiffs reminiscent of pine resin, fresh aromatic herbs. The fruit is a bit in the background, small red fruits with some black mixed in. Deep, complex nose that needs time to unfold. On the palate the quality is undeniable: silky texture, fine grained tannins providing structure and length, incredible freshness and persistence. One sip calls for another one. The wine goes on for minutes. Pinot Noir at his best. Richebourg is always considered the most powerful and structured GC of the Domaine, it will need several years, probably 10 if not more, to come into its own. Lay down and forget about it.

my first tasting of DRC’s - 2017 Corton & Echezeaux & and this 2011 Richebourg. This wine definitely needs time to open up - initially very dominant green stems - just was not expecting that in a Pinot. Over 90 minutes (the bottle had only been opened an hour or so - could have done with more), that gave way to farmyard and stewed mushrooms. An interesting wine, but probably pipped by the Echezeaux, and possibly an approachable Corton, on the night. All enjoyed overall though !

6 Decades of La Tache: Tasted side by side with the RSV and La Tâche, the Richebourg comes across as closed on the nose without identifiable flaw. I appreciate the palate depth here which is impressive in its own right, but like the RSV there’s too much stem for my taste. It’s one thing when a touch of green herbaceousness accents the wine, but this overwhelms. There was talk about this bottle being off owing to the muted nose and perhaps it was, but it conformed with the green 2011 notes of the obviously correct wines so for anyone (like me) who can’t stand green, I would approach this with great caution. I would love to be surprised in 10 years. Time will tell.

Beautiful floral/stem and spice nose. Previously tasted at the domain in ‘12. Not as ‘muscular’ as I previously described. Actually has somewhat of an elegant side to it. Excellent acidity and fruit, so should age quite well.

SLDS at Quay: Blind. Floral, raspberry, strawberry and roses - pretty red aromatic profile. Good fruit depth on the palate with fantastic texture and understated power. Delicious and delicate, this starts to strut its stuff with more time in the glass. Superb!

Served blind. Shocking how accessible this was as pop and pour. Brooding but not nearly as tannic as I would expect. Dark fruit and a touch of sauvages.

2011 DRC Tasting (Paris, France): Deeper in color still than the RSV. Massive spice, black pepper, black fruit, stems and wet stone on the nose. Power and muscle on the palate. Much less finesse than the RSV and more raw energy. Very full in the mid palate. The spice dominates and the finish is ultra long with outstanding grip. The depth and power of this wine stood out in the range.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2011 (St. Gallen): Darker fruit than the previous, earthy, a bit surly. Brings to mind bark and roots. But then it becomes airy too, on darker tones, though. Later on it develops a sweet note, from oak perhaps? But subtle and fine. On the palate, surpisingly light-footed on entry, very mineral, almost ferrous, then grows in intensity. Very powerful, the most tannic, but still well controlled. Over the very long finish it becomes fresh, ethereal and floral, and makes you forget how strong and powerful it was...

94-95 Mittleres Rubinrot. Sehr zurückhaltend.Weniger Säure als RSVT. Anfangs leicht pilzige,kräuterige Nase. Kandierte Himbeeren, rotfruchtig, leicht parfümiert,würzig,Waldboden. Eher dicht, straff, gute Spannung, trocken, gutes Säurerückgrat, seidig, glatte Tannine, feine Holznoten. Langer erdig-pilziger Abgang.

Fifth in line of tonight’s six DRC 2011’s on the table. The wines had been decanted for 60 minutes prior to being poured. The Richebourg displays a quite soft nose, not giving away all that much. I could find some lovely spices, stone dust and minerals, raspberries, green herbs and stems, tobacco and a touch of oak with vanilla undertones. The palate is quite sneaky, with somewhat tart, dark red fruit, dark cherries, strawberries, cranberries, lingonberries, pomegranate and plums. It’s structured, yet quite silky with a certain femininity and has a very long and tremendous finish. Good stuffing and heading for a long life. 94+

Tasted at the domaine in barrel. Dark. Spice and dark fruits. Very muscular, masculine wine. But perhaps a bit less structured than the GE. This should develop beautfully with time. 94

Tasted from the barrel. A nice luscious and silky nose of big red fruits. A hint of fresh truffles and some spices. No other way to describe it as being powerful, but yet subtle at the same time - almost as if its waiting to unleash something on all of us. Flavours were bold with cherries, cassis and strawberries rounding it out.

In-your-face floral aromatics. Jolly complex. Expansive characteristics offered a powerful finish with immense length. Consistent notes across 2 bottles. WOTN against 98 RSV and 07 GE.
