Great 2nd wine of Pichon Longueville: plum, tobacco leaf, dried black fruit, note of fig, blackcurrant, graphite, cigar, medium plus body, great long finish.

Dinner of Bordeaux 2nd Labels (Maria's place - Miro): Deep ruby, and quite heavily extracted. A flamboyant nose, with blackberry, pepper, and cloves. Tannins fairly strong, and quite some weight, and some heightened alcohol heat, with tart black cherry, and a lot of cloves and nutmeg, as well as fresh cut grass. A fairly long finish, and ebbing with energy. Nice!

Very Pichon Lalande in style, especially judging it from the nose, feminine, nose of red berries, a hint of bell pepper. The palate is deep, rich and full, slightly sweet, lacking complexity, a typical Pauillac! Dark in colour, ready to go but not in a rush! A beauty!

Classic nose, fairly fresh actually. Nothing awkward or overpowering with a well balanced wood. Entry quite tasty of blackberry jam, juicy. Nice mouth feel bringing on nice red liquorice late with a long peppery finish. Tannins there with just the smallest hint of herbal greenness. This has developed nicely.

After some air in the decanter and a slight chill on this warm evening, this was good to go. Still some decent redcurrant and blackberry, cedar nose, and despite the slightest hint of green on the finish, this was beautifully balanced and complete. Three down and three to go - no rush but at peak now.

Light nose that grew strong over time of toast and blackberry and pencil lead. Nice entry heavy on blackberry and cassis and tobacco wood. This remains a bit harsh late in the mouth with a strong herbal finish. It did melt a bit with air which smoothed it out backside of mid-mouth. Could last many more years to see how it evolves, but it needs a heavy decant now.

Still a bit of a green finish on opening, which after all these years seems destined never to melt away. But after a few hours in the decanter, and with food, this emerges as a decent claret.

My last bottle of 6. In the middle of its plateau. Great paulliac flavors back currants, flint, and cigar box. Drinking better than the recent grand vin--I'm guessing due to higher merlot content. Still has a nice tannic backbone but soft enough not to need food to enjoy. Solid stuff, start to drink now and over next 5yrs. 91-92

I enjoyed the bottle even though I think it may have some integration and development to go. The overwhelming element is tannins, which tells me it can go longer. The fruit is there, a dark black brambly type, and I think a couple of more years might improve it. This seems very classic and well-built to me. My companion said the oak was predominant but I did not think it was unpleasant. It is showing a bit of bricking in the color just to note.

Finally in its drinking plateau. Classic Pauillac. Lovely flint and cigar nose with a palate of cassis and other dark fruit. Lengthy cigar box and sandalwood finish. Doesn't have lots of depth, but it lovely just the same. Will drink my last bottle over the next 1-2yrs and then the Grand vin.

Dark ruby in colour with tints of copper on the rim. Restrained nose of blackcurrant and sweet blueberry, a touch of violet. Still has some grippy tannin, great structure and that classic rich, savoury texture, leathery, a bit of tobacco and bright, zesty cherry acidity that carries the finish. Softer and much less rustic than previous vintages, drinking beautifully now but as others have said, still has a few years for that tannin to smooth out even more ****1/2

Reticent nose of stale blackberry and cassis. Nice, just closed. Entry is smooth and very tasty. Blossoms out nicely after a dip in weight mid-mouth. Good finish with still a lot of tannic weight, spice and tobacco, although they all come quite late. Very pleasant and tasty now. Seems older perhaps than it is. Easy to drink, juicy and plump.

A Randy Birthday (The Straits Wine Company @ UE Square): Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of toasted oak, green bell peppers, blackcurrant, and plum. Developing. On the palate, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavor intensity, with flavours of green bell peppers, herbaceousness, blackcurrant, and plums. Medium finish. Good quality. Still rather thin and tight at this point. Give this another few more years to open up more.

A Forgotten Event (Unknown): Decent enough in its own right, but putting it next to a great bottle of 2004 Lagrange really showed up the relative weakness of this wine. I liked the nose with its fragrant notes of tobacco, sweet spice and cedar swirling around aromas of plums, berries and cassis. The palate was nicely balanced and very pleasant, with fresh acidity and plush tannins wrapped around bright flavours of dark cherries, cassis and berries. Unfortunately, this lacked the depth to make it a truly satisfying drink, petering out in a thinner finish with some cocoa and spice and a slight bittersweet touch. Okay, but not great. It will make decent early drinking though, probably starting to show at peak in a couple of years' time.

Deep dark red in colour with a touch of brown hue! Rich nose of black currant, spices and vanilla oak! Very rich on the palate, echoing the nose nicely! Though it is a bit simple and lacking a little depth, otherwise will score it a little higher!

18mos since my last bottle and still not close to peak. Nose of flint, slightly green herbs, and toast. Palate is quite balanced, with plum, black currants, spice, and flint. Seems a little less expressive and more reserved than last year, as it seems to transition from a merlot dominated wine to more cab. Moderate finish with a bitterness to the tannins on the transition. Still needs a few years as it comes across as a little closed and still youthful.

Garnet, ruby with medium viscosity in the glass. Graphite, mushroom, red fruit and forest pine on a nose that isn't as giving as expected. Medium body with vibrant raspberry, pine nut, bing cherry, tobacco, olive and noticeable heat on the palate. Secondary toast, plum, squash and spearmint. Grippy tannin. Grainy textures on the back. Medium finish. Good QPR.

Wonderful nose of dark jammy fruits plus the vanilla oak! A classic nose! Dark dark ruby in colour! The palate is quite smooth though some noticeable tannins, fruity! Drinking nicely at the moment and should have few more years to go! Very Pichon Lalande indeed but still at this point I prefer the year 2001!

Upon opening the wine showed a better nose than the previous bottle opened in 2008. After one hour of decanting the wine is a bit shy on the nose, but it shows some secondary characteristics that are fantastic, just a bit faint or distant. On the palate, it shows more stuff than the nose. Decent concentration, cassis, coffee grounds, decent acidity. Tannins start to integrate, but still there. A bit bitter in the finish.

Very expressive smoke, flint, espresso, black currants and rose petal nose with an herbal(mild green) edge. Palate had plenty of currants, touch of plum, spice, fantastic energy and acidity with a nice, polished tannins with a sandy mouthfeel on the back end. Finishes with a leafy herbal character added to black current fruit. Very impressive 2nd wine especially from '04, with fantastic poise and clarity of terrior and very much Pauillac.Just starting to enter it's drinking window. Needs 5yrs to blossm. I hope this speaks well of the grand vin, as this is delicious for the price. If there's a negative it lacks a little density and concentration on the mid-palate.

Much more closed than the last bottle. Still with a nose of flint, currants, and toast. Palate was taught and acidic, but not giving up much fruit, but did show a mild herbal leafy green character. Medium finish of mocha and flint. Quite good though missing the spice and complexity of prior bottles. Plenty of tannin to age. On night 2 has a very strong nose and flavor of burnt rubber. Undrinkable. We'll call this flawed. Strange I didn't get it on night 1.

This is to my taste. dark red, Earthy nose. I have to agree with Nutty08 on this one: I'm getting the same stuff out of it as his two tastings. The fruit is a little muddied and even herbal, but I like that finish. To me this is a good example of how a Bordeaux is a lot more tasty than a Napa. Served with herb and pepper dry rubbed pork. I should have left off the cumin though - it was too spicy. Not sure how long to keep it... either drink it now or wait 5 years to see if something remarkable happens.

Exotic coffee, currants, and herbal leaf nose--hard to explain and a note I've only gotten in '04 Lalande wines. Forward palate with slightly drying structured tannins, cassis and mostly current driven palate, and a lengthy steely finish of flint. Has anice mineral edge to the nose I'm starting to find mostly in Pauillac. This should continue to improve, but accessible and enjoyable now. Smooth silky mouthfeel with fine tannins. Very consistent to prior recent note. Does have a noticeable herbal/vegetable edge, not for those who like bright clean fruit.

Bordeaux at the Monterey (The Monterey): Mild, funky nose with a little barnyard, currants and plum. Smoky currants and plum on the palate, showing distinctly more merlot character than the PLL, but still retains a slight about of herbal greenness on the palate adding complexity. Dark fruit forward finish that turns slightly sweet. This was drinking very well, less tannic and more forward than the 1st wine, but plenty of balance and complexity. Maybe the best 2nd wine I’ve had.

The wine was opened and decanted for 1 hour. The wine seemed shut down and unapproachable. While there was some nice dark fruit, blackberry, chocolate, some vanilla on the nose and palate, soft tannins and little acidity but it flattened out on the finish with a woody finish. Very little complexity or character. Having said that, it seemed as if it was 'trying to free itself' and open to a nice, savory, subtle wine so I wouldn't give up on this wine just yet. While an I saved 1/2 the bottle to retry today. While an 04 and said to be approachable it may just be it is too young. Not certain on this one yet. It had been suggested by one poster it was past its peak. Not certain I agree and certainly hope that is not the case but he/she could be right.
One final thought. This is a 13% wine which seemed very characteristic of Bordeaux and it is possible that with all the heavily extracted fruity wines I tasted at tastings earlier in the day, my palate may have been off slightly. Today should render a better test.

MB finished our last half bottle; alas, I was on call. I got a sniff and a sip, enough to find out what I was missing. Very nice for a young Pauillac, showing '04 was just fine in the Médoc. Blackberry and dark chocolate, a little anise and cedar. Nice mouthfeel. Wish I had bought more.

Somewhat reserved but attractive nose of exotic plum, cassis, and blackberry. The palate is surprisingly light and round, much lighter than its big brother Pichon Lalande. As light bodied as the wine feels in the mouth it still delivers rich flavors of dark fruit, licorice, violets, and cocoa powder. 15+ second finish of delicious black fruit with a fresh acidic streak and sweet red spices. Elegant and pure.

Pop and pour from a bag hidden under the table at a charity auction, so not drunk under ideal circumstances. Not showing much at all at first except for a green streak. Improved with air and some warmth, but it was gone too soon for it to really come around. Not a good showing, but I'll keep an open mind and drink the next bottle under better circumstances.

Wine Education Service Bordeaux Second Wines Tasting (LSE, London): Dusty plum colour. Looks young. Black fruit, reasonably fresh aroma. Baked and slightly jammy once opened up in the glass. Soft mouthfeel, not overly tannic, with a velvet texture and nice dense fruit. Nicely balanced, drinking well now, without having any wow factor. Not for the long term methinks.

Nice bottle. Smooth and well balanced. Ready to drink just pop and pour. I was expecting more roughness and tannic structure given the wine's relative youth. Not worth the $97 I paid at a restaurant, but a good wine.

Yummy stuff. Deep colour but the nose has a compact and restrained elegance. Slight nose of cedar and dark fruit with leafy, slightly green notes but pure fruit - a touch of charcoal and earth. Taste - good, fine tannins that give nice grip but are not obstrusive - delicate fruit - not overwhelming and there is good balance here. Lots of rich coffee bean notes coming through. I would say this is actually drinking really well right now - it has the vigour of youth without the crunchy nature you would normally expect of a Paulliac right now. Good acidity as well, but I dont think it will improve too much. It has a nice freshness to it. Very good. For £10 cracking quality.
EDIT: Had another bottle last night - this was much more dense than the other bottle and really could last another 10 years. Either way, for £10 this is silly. It is like they are giving it away at that price.

Tannic as expected but much more vibrant and bright. I was in the mood for a still-tannic youngish claret and got it - was pleasantly surprised, though, by how easy it was to drink and the complexity and structure. At the price paid - absolute bargain.

Approaching to the peak, but not yet there. Tannins still exist! The fruit is not as round as I tasted last time, a mild touch of greeness! But the nose is very fragrant now! Tight on the palate! I'll wait one to two years to see how it develops, will be interesting to see! Definitely a Chateau Pichon-Lalande wine. Drink 2011-2019.

Still young, will need a bit more time, but I thought significantly lighter in weight than I expected. Thin and short, with a clipped finish, not at all what I thought a 2004 should be tasting like. Will try another one in a year or so.

Good balance of fruit, earth and acidity in an old world way. Did not detect any sourness. It was rather thin and watery though. The finish was pretty short and the tannins were not as sharp as I'd expect from such a young wine. Completely different from what other people had experienced so perhaps my bottle was not representative.

2nd btl. drank over 3+ hrs. undecanted as situation dosent allow. suggest you decant whenever you open a reserve comtess as it takes a while for the nose to open. but once open, the familiar lalande comes to mind. nice! lot of cassis. fresh. a very nice uncomplicated wine to drink on a regular basis. drank this '04 reseve comtess followed by a '99 ducru beaucaillou and then '01 grand puy lacoste over 6 hrs. i actually preferd the '04 reserve comtess over the '01 grand puy lacoste.

This wine was very tight when first opened, to the point that my friend who was tasting it blind couldn't pick up much smell and guessed it was a rather cheap American wine. We decided to let it sit for an hour, and it changed completely. It developed a very pleasant truffle smell and taste with a little coffee grounds smell. Vegetable flavors on the end palate that I would associate with Lalande. Interesting and original, and I would recommend this wine, but only after decanting or further aging (which it should be able to handle well).

purple blue. nose is cassis, currant, and a bit of vanilla, hints of herbs. Quite primary, grapey. Mid to fullish palate, good fruit concentration, prominent acidity, grapey, curranty, cassis, and has a nice weight in the mouth. Think this will evolve nicely, and improve with 5 to 7 years in the bottle.

great investment. layers of sour sour tannins that will hold the wine together for at LEAST 7 years. This wine is yet sour, not something everyone would enjoy. Personally, young sour wines do not turn sweet as they grow. small oak structure, good compulsvie fruit of cherries dark dark cheries with chocolate box, little earthy, and green finish. long lasting finish of ripe berries. 1 minute +. dark ruby color, fresh young. fresh like virgin.

Cedar and cassis nose, warm and full in the mouth, but just a fraction green. Finishes a bit short, but with a bit of fresh acidity that complements food.
