As good a Roumier Bonnes Mares as I've ever had. This is still youthful with a deep core of dark cherry fruit and it took a while to come around in the glass. Once it did though, the power and intensity was magnificent and the firm but lacy texture mind-boggling. Such amazing freshness and verve with a mineral-laden taut finish that is legendary. One of those Burgundies that reminds me of the heights these wines can reach despite the frustrating, costly and inconsistent process of finding them.

My first time with this vintage. deep and profound. Powerful but not explosive. Mineral dust, deep cherry, ultra long, brilliantly focused. Yes, it will get better but so good now. I'll remember this wine.

Last tasted in 2020. It is evolving slightly but has a ways to go. Big wine with lots of darker fruit, pepper and a touch of oak. Likely better with a couple of hours of air.

Pre-celebration dinner (Trelissick Crescent, Ngaio, Wellington, New Zealand): This is a big one! Profound red Burgundy with an amazing capacity for ageing. Dense colour, an absolutely profound Burgundian nose of the deepest black cherry and berry fruit, allied to an amazing iron-ore, almost rusty mineral nose that is both earthy and suggests a palate crying out for all the ageing it can be given. The wine is essentially perfect, but it is still tight and while complete, is still only hinting at the profundities that will emerge with another 10 to 15 or more years. Like the Chave Cuvee Cathelin 2000 drunk the day before, this could be a 50+ year ageing prospect. As grand a Burgundy as I have ever drunk. This could well achieve perfection in a decade.

[Blind] Punchy red and black cherry, fairly big. Dark spice, present oak. Younger but expressive and flashy. Racy, floral. Very big but also detailed and intriguing. Can happily enjoy and appreciate this now but there are clearly years of runway here. Enormous Burgundy.

Mid-Aged Great Roumier Dinner (RPM Steak - Chicago IL): In 93/98/99 flight. So much black and red cherry and berry densely packed and concentration with wonderful spice and floral support. OK this isn't as harmonious right now as the 1998, but bigger and more exciting, especially for the future.

99/98/93. My favorite of the trio but not quite as ready and complete as the 1998. Insanely pure fruit with so much floral and spice intensity. Just not fully seamless yet with a structural edge that needs another few years to completely come together, but already spectacular.

Excellent power, with dark cherry, roses, minerals, black pepper, and masculine structure. Greater depth and harmony than the 99 Amoureuses next to it. Even though it’s further along the aging curve than the 05 and 02 BM it still requires more years of development….none of those 3 are ready, though all are equally impressive

Acker Pre-Auction September 2022 (Redbury Lounge): I often say that this is the producer that gets me to understand Burgundy and while I’m sure there are some bottles that are less great so far it seems like it’s always true. This was less fruit and more woodsy than some and not my absolute favorite of the ones I’ve tried but there is still that slightly ethereal lightness and balance that is hard to accomplish and seems to command the highest prices these days. Wonderful wine. Great to get to try.

This is the second time I've tried this wine in the last couple of years, it's certainly dark, structured and powerful but it's overshadowed by all the brett in this wine. It's really difficult to focus on anything other than the brett here, it just get's worse with time and air. A shame.

Wines for the Acker Merrall Bicentennial Auction (The Pool - New York NY): Walk around tasting. Open a couple of hours before serving, but this simply needed more air. Glorious nose of complex black and red fruit with spice notes. Clearly a great wine is emerging here. Dense and powerful but just too backward and rugged from middle through finish. Clearly 96+ point potential, but this needs more time and/or air.

Expectations high here, especially because 3 weeks earlier I had had a tragic heat damaged bottle. Tonight this was decanted 2 hours, but still seems very restrained and closed, like it needs 4 more open hours, or maybe ten years in bottle. Beautifully elegant, but from mid palate on it seems firm and slightly tart, difficult to evaluate because its so tight.

Lots of discussion around brett and funk with this bottle. Definitely there and took a couple hours to blow off and open up. Classic Roumier stemmy and earthy notes. Precise and chiseled wine. Just something a little off here with the funk. Also a tad closed tonight. Can use more cellar time for sure.

Drunk at Epure Hong Kong - Perhaps a bit muted or maybe shy is a better word. Certainly the '99 Les Am is more giving at the moment. As with most '99s of this stature, this needs many, many more years.

Really good tonight. Classic Roumier. Whole cluster rich spiciness with awesome red berries and really great earth notes and silky tannins. Really sexy and feminine. Party at My Place: Aromatically highly expressive, but still youthful and polished in terms of dark red and black cherry fruit. Wood spices, but of very high breed and already integrating nicely into the red and black berry fruit and dark earth influence on the palate. A marquee bottle courtesy of JK which produced a split decision amounts the group against the '99 Dujac Bonnes Mares which I found more expressive and forward.

Twenty Eight Vintages of Roumier Bonnes Mares: Historically, I've found the 99 almost painfully young. And while still showing youthful, it's starting to present nicely and you can very much appreciate how much this has to offer. I'd still hold off opening if you only have a few.

Intense nose that is completely dominated by spearmint, RJ thinks the spearmint expression is due to the wine being closed which makes sense. Intense ripe red fruit, cherry, raspberry jam, caramel, strong spearmint, crushed rock, iron and sap. Excellent concentration, coiled ripe red and black fruit, bright acidity, strong iron and limestone and a medium to long intense ripe red fruit and spearmint driven finish. Having had a close to perfect bottle only in July, not sure what to make out of this. Very tight and young. Still needs time especially this example.

Extremely complex nose of spice, clove, soil, and rich fruit, which was more blue than red. This unfurled gloriously over a couple hours, seeming to give more and more as time went on. Stunning palate, packing concentrated and varied fruit in silky/satiny textures with good freshness, earth, and other accents. All kinds of layers and complexity in an elegant, masterful package.

Roumier Bonnes Mares / Amoureuses Dinner (Formento's - Chicago IL): Tasted single blind alongside 1999 Amoureuses. Open 3 hours before serving, one hour in decanter. Massive black and red cherry with so much concentration and power, without anything out of sync. Rich and layered, this kept unfolding with more time in glass. Clearly more powerful and less elegant vs the wine in the next glass, all 6 of us correctly identified this as the Bonnes Mares. I ever-so-slightly preferred Amoureuses tonight, while 2 of the 6 preferred this Bonnes Mares.

Kelly’s 61st - Champ, Monfortino, Burgundy and a ringer ('14 Summum) (The Grill Room at the Rosewood DC): Incredibly rich nose displaying concentrated sweet red and black fruits, raspberry jam, blackberry jelly, caramel, sap, iron, red flowers and mineral. Excellent concentration, beautifully layered intense black fruit, oily yet silky and airy, bright acidity, strong mineral presence and a long seamless finish. With air, the palate becomes incredibly silky and polished. Although very young the opulent black fruit and sensual palate make this very enjoyable. It needs another ten years minimum to reach the youthful peak. I really love the silky airy texture. Very special wine!

This 99 is big and structured but so balanced and lovely. Interestingly compared to the 05 in the next glass this 99 is still shy and not as open for business. I think these 99s need more time in order to drink on regular basis. Earth tones, cherries, charcoal, spice and tons of nuance. I am a big fan of this wine and think the score will go higher from here.

A lost Friday afternoon gathering – 96 Oeno, 99 Roumier BM, 13 Ente VV, 95 Rayas, 90 Chap (BlackSalt, Washington DC): Youthful and vibrant yet very detailed and complex nose displaying strawberry, a hint of blackberry jelly, stewed tomato, stem, sap, iron, rose, root beer, light caramel, animal and earth. Excellent concentration, vibrant, energetic, beautifully detailed and perfectly harmonious, sap, bright acidity, excellent mineral presence, quite noticeable very fine tannins and an incredibly long energetic finish. So polished, complex, detailed, vibrant and pure. The velvet glove is so silky and smooth that the iron fist is barely noticeable. For my palate, the secondary notes are starting to show, though mostly masked by the opulent youthful fruit. It will required another five to ten years to reach the first stage of the youthful peak. Truly a WOW showing.

End of 2014 wines: On bouquet, a full peacock's tail of aromas. Everything you look for in a top Grand Cru Burgundy bouquet. Stunning on palate, with lifted, primary fruit. Glossy, with a gorgeous mouthfeel and texture. Complex and multi-layered flavours, largely in the red fruit spectrum. Serious structure and tannins, huge concentration and fruit weight, but with real lightness and deftness of touch. Intense but brooding, with a huge amount to come in the next 20 years. But on the day, a beautiful wine to experience. A real treat, thanks Mike.

The 1999 G.Roumier Bonnes Mares was the darkest coloured wine of the night and the most intense and deep, although it was quite bretty. There’s a lot of equine action with some sweaty saddle. It had remarkable depth of sweet cherry fruit and is still quite primary. It screams of a wine in need of plenty of more time although I hope the brett doesn’t take hold of the wine.

Beat the Lafite tasting (Sydney, Australia): Served blind. The nose showed leather, smoky meat, some blood/iron and well woven spice aromas. The palate is weighty and was much more muscular than the previous wine. The tannins and oak are prominent still, but the length is just outrageously good with the acidity dragging the fruit through the structural elements. Great stuff, though it is still very much in its youth.

Brought to a 99 Grand Cru tasting and voted one of the top out of 12. Amazing aromatics of deep black berries, ground coffee beans, minerals, cigar box and vanilla. What really stands out is the incredible balance between big/bold and its finesse and clarity. Incredible wine and only regret it was my last bottle. If you are lucky enough to have a few, OK to sample now but by far this wine is going to shine with some age.

Mostly Burgs at Heidi's: Another stunner. Darker red color in the glass. Another beautiful nose darker cherry fruit, spice and mineral. Seemed to be holding plenty back, but still showed well. Equally great on the palate with tons of structure and tons of fruit. Flavors attack from start to finish with no let-up, leading to a long, lingering (satisfying) finish. This is only about my fifth Bonnes Mares, but there was a signature smell/taste that I associate with Bonnes Mares. While it is drinking well now, I would definitely hold on to these for a few more years if at all possible.

A very complete wine. There is lots of cedar on the nose - very classy. But there is still a firm backbone of acidity throughout this wine that tells me it needs many more years to be enjoyable... it was more open last summer, and is now shut down some. Impressive

Served blind. Dark fruit, just a hint of oxidation. Big, spicy wine, country style rather than grand cru. Lacks elegance and complexity for what it is. Cannot see this going anywhere, confirms my impression on the 99 vintage. First of all: where's the elegance, that is sine qua non? Chez moi, brought by HSA.

Roumier Dinner with 7 Vintages of Bonnes Mares++++ (Boka - Chicago IL): Single blind flight. Ripe black cherry and blackberry on nose and palate with swirling, intoxicating spice. Fruit has an intensity that just explodes. Shows the ripeness of the vintage and Roumier style, but also perfect balance and incredible length and depth. This was the first time I have had this wine – and it's my Wine of the Night. I had incredible anxiety returning home from dinner -did I open my only bottle?!?! I was relieved to see I have 3 more. Until last night, Dujac 1978 was the best Bonnes Mares I’ve ever tasted. No longer. Hmmm…my wine of the Year? Probably not, I will have to look at what I tasted at La Paulee, but probably my WOTY for a wine consumed more "normally."

Roumier Dinner (BOKA Restaurant, Chicago IL): A very powerful wine. A somewhat leaner, darker fruit nose and palate that, in my opinion, was slightly shut down. This is going to be really special someday and I wish I had some in the cellar.

10/30/2017 - Robert Pavlovich Likes this wine:
Extremely complex nose of spice, clove, soil, and rich fruit, which was more blue than red. This unfurled gloriously over a couple hours, seeming to give more and more as time went on. Stunning palate, packing concentrated and varied fruit in silky/satiny textures with good freshness, earth, and other accents. All kinds of layers and complexity in an elegant, masterful package.

NM Roumier BM vertical. So so young, still inky purple with primary aromatics. Will be a killer. Remaining bottles need to sit for a long while.

Pre-Auction Dinner (Morini): Absolutely sensational nose right out of the gate. Fresh red and blueberry fruit. Frosty thin soil. Incredibly expressive and showy. Acrylics. Texturally interesting. Finish flirts on and on. Lovely damp earth and a bit of hay. Wow this is fantastic.

Intriguing notes of cherries, chestnuts, and meat on the nose. Cherries, strawberries, and raspberries wrapped in fine tannins on the palate. Complex notes of meat and earth. Amazingly long finish. Almost ready to drink. Worth pursuing and much better than the 2002 that I tried side by side.

A scarily young wine that needs another 10-15 years of age.... but is currently showing such amazing balance and succulent, lovely black fruits that are notably gorgeous.

Roumier Bonnes Mares Vertical (Bouley): Lacquered and syrupy black cherry, black cherry halls with menthol, developing some nice damp hay and acrylic notes on top as well. Very big and reminiscent of ’99 DRC RSV. Highly expressive bouquet and absolutely explosive red cherry on the palate. Dense, robust, nice notes of coffee throughout. This was sensational tonight.

Suave nose with blackberry, light tar and soft spice to rival the '95. Concentrated palate with dark earth to balance the fruit and notes of mace. Delicious

U Club Joy Of Wine Dinner. Ruby color, some bricking. Massive nose of forward barnyard, sheep ass, tight cherry, crushed grey rocks and saline. Very austere and still youthful. Palate was full of serious structured and acid. Again quite young. Elements of pure cherry, saddle, perfume and green leaf. Needs more time to fully evolve.

La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Metropolitan Pavilion - New York NY): Tasting, brief note. Certainly a contender for young WOTN, this bring together explosive black fruit, great spice, all in perfect harmony. Served alongside its 2002 counterpart, this 1999 was far superior.

In time this will likely merit a much higher score. This is too young for my taste. I will wait at least another 3 years before I try again.

While I'm okay drinking my red burgs young, this is simply not ready. Hold if you have only a couple, go ahead now if you have a case. But this needs more time. Likely will be great.

The class is obvious and there is quite a bit of tannin. Some gorgeous savory spice started to emerge with time in the glass. This is going to be really special someday and I wish I had some in the cellar.
