Surprisingly similar to last bottle 5 years ago - fading blackcurrant fruit with leafy Cabernet hints, leather, cooked meat, dark soil. The only criticism would be that the Syrah and Cabernet didn’t seem as complementary as they might have once been. Enjoyable but not standout ****

Garnet, brick red with broad orange rim and much brighter than ten years ago, I guess. Stored at textbook conditions since release. VTS. Tobacco, forest earth, strawberries, blackberries, violets, black olives, marrow, bacon. On the palate still fruity and long, smooth but with noticeable round tannin left and better than I remember with more vigor. I have decanted a part of it, but it is not really necessary. On the other hand it does not harm as well. So for cosmetic reasons or if you need to transport the wine, you can do it, but without extended airing after this procedure. This is a great joy to drink now. Really magical and a suprise for me, especially given the level. But I have to admit, this is the best and sadly the last bottel of 6 I had. So obviously this is going to hold through for a longer time than I could imagine some years ago. So light on its feet, but yet powerful and complex. Perplexing for me, but as the peer group supports my impressions for this bottle: 5/14/19/10 -2030+ if perfectly stored and the cork holds through. The cork of this was soaked to 2/3.

Bordeaux for once :) (Friend’s place): Well that supposedly stunner, is already a bit old for me, the nose is quite herbaceous and greeny, leafy, with a touch of evolution, well a big touch ! Palate is a bit old too, so the wine is still there but lacks fruit and has a bigger acidity than body, 5 years from now this would have been so much better probably, still very drinkable but not my jam

IBBS @ Trompette (La Trompette, London): Same case as Tuesday’s bottle, but this time only double decanted an hour in advance. Similar richness from the off, mellow garrigue and polite southern Rhône meets rich Bordeaux. Rich, green olives to balance, and silky sweet through to the finish with out any of the dryness that Tuesday’s extended double decant resulted in. A lovely wine in a perfect place. Salut, RK. *****

FMG @ 67PM (67 Pall Mall, London): Deep garnet. Velvety. Double-decanted for sediment around here hours ahead of drinking. Initially when decanted all southern garrigue, though this was less obvious when served, green olive creeping in too. Very mellow and smooth. With the extended airing there’s a dry note creeping in to the finish. Probably better decanted immediately prior to service though there’s a reasonable sediment so trickier if transporting. ****

Top shoulder...cork badly infected for about 90%, was not expecting much... however, after about 45 minutes in the decanter....great nose of prunes, figs, provencal herbs. Medium body, sweetness on the palate, 12% alc. Great joy to drink with leg of lamb stewed for a number of hours in the Tagine. What an unexpected pleasure! If you have bottles in better condition than my description this wine may last a few more years, but why wait?

Brick red with orange rim. Now fully mature with tannins largely shed, quite complex with notes of red and black fruits, smoke and tobacco, game and charcoal. It is in lack of some vigor for a outstanding rating and this isn't going to get better with further aging. Some years ago with more power, but not as smooth as today I rated it 94. Drink it up in the next few years.

Decanted for 30 mins and drunk across 60-90 mins. Slightly lighter bodied that I had expected but not lacking at all for it. An attractive nose of blackcurrant and soft leather with notes of roasted meat, game and olive. Clearly warmer than left bank claret and also beautiful for having the Syrah notes on top of the Cabernet - best of both worlds. Tannins largely resolved. I think this wasn't the 'youngest' bottle but was in a very good place. I will be drinking my remaining bottle over the next 3-5 years ****1/2

Outstanding bottle. I had bought this one from the La Beaugravière in Mondragon (off the old n7 highway near Valence). Simply opened it a 3hours before dinner and it had a wonderful nose which it kept over the hours we had it. Beautiful garnet colour, stunning nose of black fuits (blackberry in particular), great lingering acidity keeping in check the richness of fruits and alcohol. Med soft tannins. GREAT bottle (my best score ever I reckon).

My last bottle, unfortunately. The appearance says mature, but not over the hill. A deep, slightly brownish red. The nose suggests Cabernet up front with touch of green pepper nicely backed by red cherry and strawberry, leather, mushroom. Tannins are resolved and acidity in balance with the sweet fruit. Pleasure to drink.

Too bad, the bottle had a slight hint of TCA which was not enough to return the bottle but bad enough to be unhappy to miss a really great bottle. The TCA went away after about two hours, so the last sip was clean but not nearly as spectacular as the last bottle. Cassis, sous-bois, cedar, some smoke.

On s'y vautre!
95 pts

Darkest colour of the tasting so far and by far the richest. Was looking forward to this a lot, but compared to the older wines it was missing in aromatic complexity. I found it quite closed - other were raving over it though - and actually quite simple. Yep. there was rich, sweet, black, fruit and a lovely texture, but compared to the 85 or 86, it was just a bit too simple. Obvoiusly a good vintage of Trevallon needs more than the 21 years that this has already had. Rating based on how it tasted, not on its potential.

My first ever bottle of Trevallon, and what a revelation! I am a die-hard Burgundy fan (I do love Rhone, both northern and southern), and so was a little apprehensive! Poured from a decanter, this was ruby red with a clear rim, a nose of cherries, and round concentrated medium-bodied in the mouth. A beautiful introduction to this estate.

Tempier Tasting @ Joost B. (Netherlands): Beautiful wine, very elegant, though quite 'modern' in its flavour profile. Slightly sweet nose of rosehips and grenade. Smooth and soft, somewhere between a Hermitage and a St. Julien with a Napa twist. I suspect that this is nearing the end of its drinking plateau, so drink up. 17.5/20

Unlike the last bottle I opened...this one was ON. Lots of secondary -- wine seems to be at peak. Not overly ripe, not overly anything...just really good balanced wine. One of the best versions of this wine I've had...and it's the best Trevallon vintage I've had - a very successful vintage for him that isn't as 1990 as you might think.

Glass filling aroma of funky sweet berry fruit with an earthy / garrigue bottom. Hints of vanilla bean and Asian spices. Sleek, smooth and palate coating with a brightness that gives the wine a lighter feel than the flavors would suggest. Slightly gamy black cherry / cherry plum with a balancing combination of earthiness and spices. The gamy quality increases over the rear palate and dominates the long finish where the fruit tastes more like a paste of baked berries. A most individualistic wine that is right atop its peak now, but not in any danger of fading away soon. I would guess that the fruit will continue to give way to the gamy flavors so let that be your guide to drinking by one's own preference. The balance is so spot on that I imagine in a decade it will still be an enjoyable wine with a different set of descriptors.

Strong plums and black fruit on the nose. Black pepper and black fruit dominate. Sweet, delicious, and very tannic finish that lasts quite a while. Tannins in perfect balance with zero bricking in the gorgeous black color. This wine will continue to evolve for some time to come. 92-93

a worthy successor to the 1983 Trevallon, of which I finished my last bottle about a year ago. I was looking forward to this one but kept delaying it. no reason for furher delays! fine mature brick red, clear, not much brown; fabulous nose of game, leather thyme provencal herbs, even kirsch; the nose keeps developing and gets deeper and more intens after 1 1/2 hour or so. Very fine on the palate as well, no hard tannins left; the overall impression is of silk although with enough body and flesh to it. Outstanding, a great joy to drink. (this is definitely not a whine for Aussie-shiraz lovers, as it is so delicate and stylish and can easily be mistaken for a ligthweight wine) This vintage is now, at age 20, at full maturity, no reason not to start drinking ánd enjoying what bottles you may have left; very impressive. Trevallon has had a series of bad vintages between 1996 and 1999, but this one is definitely worth seeking out if you can find them.

Off the list at Michael Mina in SF. Deep inky purple color, nose was very expressive with dark berries, minerals and earth. Rich on the palate with black cherry and cassis. Still plenty of fruit in this wine. Nice tannin structure shows, along with the fruit, that this wine has plenty left in the tank. A pleasure to drink.

Trevallon 1985-2004: The nose her was lighter and less intense than the 1985 but it shares the calcite chalkiness and mint top notes though more towards menthol. The fruit here is redder, more cherried though with an underlying frutti di bosco quality that adds spice and sappiness, there is a more sauvage quality here with notes of game and not asphalt underpinning the fruit. In the mouth this is soft and expansive with a bitter mineral thread that knits the palate together with slightly medicinal cherry fruit and bitter orange zest on the palate leading to a finish where furry tannins build up a bit constriciting the very focused, long though slightly monotone finish. Offers a more refined, cleaner, more elegant package than the 1985. 2008-2013

Deep black-red wine with loads of sediment. The best Trevallon I have had to date. No hint of the prunish aromas that the 1995 and 2000 had. This wine was like a cross between a great bordeaux and a hermitage with a touch of provencal herbs. Austere wine, mature full of complexity and flavour to be had with food as its tannins are still there.

$60 retail. I had another bottle of this about three years ago and it was singing. This bottle was no different. Great, mature bouquet of earthy elements with dark fruit. Terrific texture, balance, and a long, harmonious finish. Game, leather, tobacco. Very impressive.

96 pts

Outstanding bottle. Incredibly young. Roasted pepper with also a touch of bell pepper on the nose with smoky (ashes) and cassis notes. Very aromatic. Shows richness, ripe but never heavy at all (only 12.7%). Long finish.
A real treat.

I still do not know what hit me, but this was flat out spectacular. Nose of cassis, tobacco. Sous-bois, mushrooms, layers of herbs, cassis, silky tannins, smoke. Kept surprising me throughout the evening. A great great bottle of Trévallon.

The nose on this bottle started out with the usual funky aromoas of an older Trevallon, but the funkiness soon dissipated to reveal a wonderful bottle of wine.

Medium garnet. Musty nose of filter paper, olives, leather, plastic. Tastes far better, though only a simple and smooth wine, leaving a faint wet paper taste. Bottle #1 of one.

(this is definitely not a whine for Aussie-shiraz lovers, as it is so delicate and stylish and can easily be mistaken for a ligthweight wine)
This vintage is now, at age 20, at full maturity, no reason not to start drinking ánd enjoying what bottles you may have left; very impressive. Trevallon has had a series of bad vintages between 1996 and 1999, but this one is definitely worth seeking out if you can find them.

Intense and mature nose. Very elegant, soft tannins. Offers an entire basar of spicy and herbal aromas, also cedar wood and smoke. Has definitely reached full maturity. Still very good but will not improve. Drink through 2010. Tasted three times in 2008/09 with consistent notes.

I'm envious of anyone still holding on to this one in quantity, but would suggest checking in on it if you have not had it in a while, as it's drinking so well right now...
