  • The 1990 Branaire is pretty low-key right out of the bottle, but I like the blueberry and tart cranberry notes which expand on the palate, joined by subtle petrichor, pencil, fir, and spice. Perhaps this isn't particularly ambitious, but it's clean, complex, and complete.

  • Nose: Red currant, red plum, mint, tobacco and cedar. Great red berries and a bit of tobacco. A really nice wine on the nose. Palate: Excellent balance here with mature tart red fruits, mint and spice. Maintains the red current freshness through the palate and wafts of leather and graphite on the back end. Finish was fresh with good persistence.

Close with the Beychevelle, but the WOTN for me very clearly here in this lovely blind flight with Englishman's Claret. Thank you!

  • From magnum. Just a delightfully, well aged, right down the fairway, red to dark fruited claret. It’s resolved, plenty of tertiary development, and in my opinion, ready to drink

  • Dark red, some sediment in the bottle, nose of old Bordeaux, spice, dry cherry, leather, can feel the age on palate, 5-8 years earlier would have been great. It’s good I enjoy some old Bordeaux wines.

  • 1990s Bordeaux wines tasting (at my home): dark transparent red-brown
excellent dark fruits nose with leather and tobacco notes
light-medium bode, soft integrated tannins, lean structured, good balance, medium harmony, medium complexity, tobacco, leather, sous-bois, truffles, pleasant finish

  • A bit of animals, cheese sticks. Poignant, woody, some eucalyptus gives the freshness on the nose.

  • Brick colored and a fine scent, very few minutes after opening a medium body on the palate with good structure and length. It´s all there, what an old Medoc needs: Fruit (plum), cedar box, leather etc.
Getting more body but more diffuse as well one hour after opening. Won´t improve. Bottle variation most likely. So drink now. Excellent dram.

  • Very mature (even for bottle bought and consumed in Bordeaux from reputable merchant) with lovely aged character. Not by any means a blockbuster. Its attractiveness is largely because it has aged, and developed lovely character, rather than being a wine of intense fruit originally.

I know 1990 wasn't quite as ripe as 1989 but I thought it was not far off, but, as I said, this isn't a blockbuster. I suspect that many 2000 Bordeaux may similarly surprise some people. If you expect a 'vintage of the decade' (or Century as usually hyped) to be Californian in ripeness then don't look to the left bank of Bordeaux in 1990 or 2000. Thankfully. The world needs more wines like this. Wines that have delicacy as well as flavour.

    13%. Cork.

  • Bouquet: Evolving melange of mushroom, leather, moldy damp earth, dried red berry and later some restrained smokiness.
Flavor: Mushroom, leather, tobacco, semi-dried red berries and cassis with a touch of smokiness. Flavors sustained through a medium-long finish.
Comment: Tannins were understated but still present, firm acidity and good berry fruit. Fine balance and intriguing, inviting aroma. A beautifully crafted wine that is drinking well now and I'd guess will hold for another 5 years.

Algemeen / potentieel: Heerlijk rijp glas. Super-klassieke Bordeaux. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 12 + Smaak / Afdronk: 16 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 91/100

  • Nice bottle, good cork. 30 Mins of decanting. Lots of Sediment here.
Starts off pure 90 wine with lots of fruit, lush and well round. An hour into it the secondary characteristics came out with earthy notes balancing well the fruit. True it lacks a bit of complexity.Still a very nice bottle well aged and a lot for it price ( 51£). Drink now but with an easy 5yrs ahead of this. 93.

  • I must be the only person that loves this wine. It was a perfect looking bottle. In great nic on the day. So rich is fully mature flavours. Very sweet like the '90s. Correct bottle. 91 points for the juice + 2 points for perfect age and condition. I loved it so much, I am running to buy a case of this stuff.

  • Basic Bordeaux in a good sense. Lots of fruit, even some lemon. Balanced wine with lots of tannins and maybe a decade of life left.

  • This is fully mature. With a light berry and spice nose, this medium bodied wine does not compete with the level of quality being produced at the property today. As a matter of style, this traditionally made wine is slightly austere and lacks the freshness, as well as the ripeness and deoth offered in current vintages from 2000 on. Drink up.

  • Good concentration, bit of leather and smoke. Not mature yet though. Tons of fruit. Nicely balanced. Not much improvement after an hour.

  • No formal notes, but a very tempting bouquet with beautiful dark and red berries and beautifully dosed oak. Same on the palate. A beautiful and harmonious wine with still a good future.

  • Dark red. Smells like sausage. Then the bouquet changes character completely. To scents of detergent. Then back to sausage. Positively weird on the nose. Elegance and harmony is to be found. But lacking a bit in power and dimension. A bit herbal. Yet a very pleasant wine. Excellent density, but lacking a touch of dimension and complexity. (from magnum).
