I rarely have occasion to say this about a wine that is not overtly flawed... corked, past its prime or similarly defective. But here, it must be said: this wine is well-nigh undrinkable. On opening, it is an inky purple. Aromas of creosote wood treatment products dominate. On the palate, it is all coarse grit sandpaper tannin and soft warm road tar. Fruit is not in attendance.
I've given this wine three days to settle down. In that time, the color has shown signs of oxidation - it is now tinged with red and bricking at the rim. The nose is a tad less aggressive, but presents the same range of aromas; ditto the palate.
Granted, in matters of taste 'a chacun son gout,' but how this wine could possibly merit '98 points' is truly beyond me. It may merit a place in a stew pot, but even that would carry some risk. Avoid.

Decanted for an hour. Ruby with moderate legs. Dark cherry and medicinal nose. Iodine and red fruit at first, then turning toward black plum, meat, and forest floor with a moderate finish. Drinking nicely with a Provencal stew.

Decanted with Venturi. Really opened up after it warmed a little from the wine fridge. Strawberry and red cherry nose. More fruit forward than expected from South Rhone. Terroir more apparent in the finish with a earth and herbs on the palate and a lasting finish. Great for the price!

Dark crimson, ruby red with a medium to full bodied texture. Venturied and then decanted after removing from a 55 degree cellar. Allowed to sit and open for about 20 minutes. Smoke, plum, cherry, and dark red fig on the nose with a deep earthy, burnt rubber component which seems to create a great deal of complexity on the nose. Spicy red berry fruit on the fore palate which evolves into complex meaty, leathery, mocha and mushroom notes on the mid-palate followed by a very long impressive finish. Initially, not something I thought I would like, but after it had some time, I really started to throughly enjoy! When I tried it 2 plus years ago, it seemed barely drinkable...either the wine has improved or my palate has evolved, or both! :-) A very complex and wonderful bottle of wine; definitely a much different flavor profile from a more familiar Bordeaux or a Burgundy. Shows a real sense of terroir. Seems to be drinking close to peak.

This wine is in a great place right now and may be at it's peak. Decanted for 2 hours before New Years Eve dinner. The nose is earthy, spicy with dark fruit showing through. Smooth and well integrated on the palate. Went very well with our dinner. Only one bottle left of my first CdP. It was tough to hold onto a $20 wine for so long but it paid off.

It's been just shy of three years since the last time we opened one of these. Looking at my last note, the time has really helped this wine. Popped and poured, the nose didn't give up much until 30-45 minutes in. Then it opened nicely to show black fruits, spice and meaty notes. On the palate, the wine was light-medium in body, with blackberry and dark fruit, licorice/tarragon, herbs de provence, and some meaty notes. This bottle showed much better than the one from sept of 08. Ann thought it was "ok" but I think there is quite a bit to like about it.

Decanted 2 hours. Nose is briary with leather. Tannins are smooth and the acidity is pretty bright. I think it will smooth out even more with 2 more years but still preserve most of the flavors - blackberry, earth and leather.

Another winner! 2nd wine of a great night out with friends at a top French byob in Philly. Nose was a little tight upon opening but started to open up after a couple of minutes. Great color, nose of dark Rhone fruit, nice balance a good acidity so it went very well with food. Long spicy, earthy finish. I don't believe this one's peaked just yet.

Pleasant nose of cranberries, cherry, sage, and garrigue. Palate has a crisp acidity, with coarse tannins still present. Lots of red fruits, a little spice, stone, and a lengthy earthy finish. Well made with strong balance, but slightly simple.

Third note on this wine, each about 1 year apart. Deep dark garnet. Served a tad warm for my taste. That said, seems to be closing a bit. Still there is a sense of outdoors to the wine with pepper, roast, smoke, mushrooms and the like, but the fruit is withdrawing. Plums and wild berries. It may be time to sit on these and wait for the second cycle.

Opened an hour after pulling the cork to aroma of violets and full Rhone fruit. Tannin moderate but still good, acid fine for more aging. Stood up to spicy spaghetti sauce with lots of garlic. Keep a few years or drink now, but air before drinking.

I think this still needs a couple more years of age. It was still a bit closed after a couple hours in a decanter. It's got a lot of potential, in a traditional CdP style. Enjoyable but not as good as it should be (and I think it will be).

Drank over two days, once with wild boar bolognese and again with stew. Decanted for a couple hours on Day 1. Very approachable with bright red fruit, plum, raspberry, sour cherry, earth, a touch of funkiness. Clipped finish. Nothing extraordinary but elegant and enjoyable.

Deep purple in color. Blackberry, plum, fig and earthy wild wet mushroom on the nose; quite intoxicating. Medium-bodied disjointed and lacking fruit on the palete. Hollow mid-palate, that transitions to an herbacious finish. Beyond the nose, this wine disappoints, but I am a CdP novice.

This is improving with time, seventeen months after last bottle. Dark pretty garnet color. Smooth and soft in the mouth. Rather accessible now. Dark cherry nose with hints of game and pepper. Mushrooms, grilled meat, smoke and cherries/plums.

Pretty closed down right now. I would suggest giving this a year or two, also some time in decanter. Still, not bad at all with licorice and cherry on the nose, a touch of game and leather on the palate along with some dry cherry. Looking forward to the seeing how the other half of the bottle has evolved overnight.

Upon opening, had a harsh almost burnt rubber nose that was rather off putting. On day two, most of this had blown off with a raspberry, garrigue, sandstone nose with a little scorched earth. Lighter bodied, but dense core of red fruits and blackberries, leather in the background. Medium finish of mineral and fruit. Solid offering without being exceptional. Should improve some with age. Unsure what the initial nose was, have another bottle to compare to. Would have thought it was a little cooked if it didn't blow off.

Ann served this blind to me with steak on the grill. It was not decanted. Very nice nose with fruits, spice and and some smokiness. We both liked the nose. In the mouth it was light to medium bodied at first with a lot of oak, lots of fine tannins and plenty of acidity. It was lacking a lot of fruit but there were cherries, plum and raspberries. It seemed like it could be young but i wasn't sure if it had enough fruit to get much better with age. It was definitely lean like others have said. On Day 2 it had put on some weight and it seemed more syrah like with some smokey, meaty, earthy and mineral qualities. Better on night two. We have one more bottle and will wait a couple of years to try it.

Nice acidity and earth to let you know it's from the Rhone, but a little short on depth and finish for a CdP, with mostly red fruit. Needs an hour or two of air to show its best. Not a big or concentrated wine, but one that is food friendly that won't attract too much attention. Not much of a QPR as I can buy CdR's that are better for half the price (this one was a gift).

Full body, deep ruby color. Dominant black fruits, herbal and peppery aroma. Black currants, dewberry and grape pedicle palate, lingering spicy finish. Powerful, rich and bold, jammy structure, complex but slightly dis-balanced, nice acidity, ripe tannins. Serve 18º - 22º. Ready, drink now and next five years.

Specialty Trade Show: Disapointed in this wine. I really enjoyed the '03, but then the price went up quite signifigantly, and I don't feel that this wine is as good. Tastes like an decent CDP, but nothing of interest. And up here, the coudelet is cheaper and a better bet. 85-88

Tasted at a Les Sinards vertical at Booze over a chat with the wine maker, Pierre Perrin of Beaucastel. Far less attractive than the 2003 on first blush, quite a bit thinner in feel, but far more structured. Grippy tannins, square structure, reticent fruit. Cherry driven on the nose, with some earth and garrigue on the palate and a flush of spice. Good, and will get better with time.

Very good for a medium bodied or thinner CdP. I prefer a much fuller bodied wine but this did not disappoint.
Deep Garnet and a nose of plum, black cherry, anise and floral hints. Fresh black cherries upfront with some blue fruit notes - tabacco, green pepper with chewy vanilla tannis rounded it out. Medium long finish.

Garnet Red with purple twinge - thin mouthfeel and body - plenty of plum and black cherry flavors and typical CdP mineral element - medium finish with chewy strong tannins. Tried the Les Sinards along side Chasse-Temps, both the same year, both Cdp's, and both the same price. They were very similar, but I would give the Chasse-Temps just a slight edge.

14%. Dark ruby, ripe, with sexy supple tannins. Terrific now, but if you can hold on to it for another 5-6 years, you’ll be very happy that you spent a few seconds reading this. $34.99 (in Ohio. Kinda steep. Bad Ohio, bad, bad.)

Basic CDP. Nice inky purple color, nose of black fruits and a touch of minerality. Nice mouthfeel, slightly thin, sweet fruit on the palate. Chewy tannins lead to a medium length finish. Nice cellar defender while you are waiting for big brother Beaucastel to mature.

Medium garnet color. Aroma is closed with just a wiff of red berries and liquourish. The palate continues with the same but with some earth, stone, and garrigue flavors ending in a fairly short finish. A difficult bottle to evaluate in that it exhibits classic CDP and Rhone valley flavors but in a very thin style.

Tasted at Beaucastel dinner May 07. Actually more open than the big dog tasted right next to it. This was on the lean earthy side, but absolutely spot on for traditional CdP flavor and taste. A medium to low-acid wine that is drinking well right now with only half hour of air. This was, for me, the find of the night, and at $22 a bottle, quite a value.

stewed fruits of plum and black cherry. dark charred oak, vanilla, garrigue. let breathe a bit to dissipate some smoky mushroom funk.

Nice and easy to drink. This is a dinner wine meant to be served with decent red meat dishes. All around a medium wine for medium events but will please most guests.

Full body, deep ruby color. Dominant black fruits, herbal and peppery aroma. Black currants, dewberry and grape pedicle palate, lingering spicy finish. Powerful, rich and bold, jammy structure, complex but slightly dis-balanced, nice acidity, ripe tannins. Serve 18º - 22º. Ready, drink now and next five years.

Vague aroma of dark cherry and vanilla. A little hot which dominated over few flavors of dark fruit. Short finish. Flawed bottle? Does CdP suppose to be like this (my first one)? Really did not enjoy considring the QPR.

Dark garnet. Smokey pepper on the nose like meat on an outside fire. Very smooth and lush with plums and more spice. Full bodied finish.

(1) Almost 1+. Very good throughout but could have been a little stronger. Need to try more as this might be underrated. Decanted for 2 hours.

Chalky dark fruit, some vegetal component on the nose, with heat. A pleasant blast of plum, dark cherry, and fig immediately on your palate, but it quickly fades away and has some astringency to it, with bitterness through the finish.

Good, but a little light for CDP. Decanting about 1 hour helped wine open up a bit. Some dark fruit, black pepper.

Color is medium dark garnet. Nose reveals charry, garrigue, and spice. On the palate, juicy cherry is quickly met with greenish herbal notes nad a hint of earth. Tastes a little out of balance, but overall pretty good.
