I tend to stay away from SA reds - too much green pepper influence - but Rubicon has me hooked (thanks Geri at VIVAT BACCHUS, London) - and this is great. Not elegant but still classy. Full flavoured and very South African, but complex, great acidity and long.

I bought this in SA when I visited a few years ago. This was probably one of my favorite reds. Very open, lots of plum and just a hint of the Pinotage taste that I get in a lot of SA reds (I know there is none in the mix) - that slight rubber taste. It wasn't enough to spoil this. This is getting to the end of its drinking window, but it is still hanging in there.

Similar to previous tasting notes. Herbal, dark fruit, tobacco, spices, notes of undergrowth and green pepper on the nose. Not overly generous on the palate. Fresh, spicy, grippy. Good length. 89-91

Dark carmine red. Typical bordeaux nose with pencil, cassis and plum. Complex. More fruity nose than a classic Bordeaux, but with a close relationship. Full bodied with soft velvety tannins. A great wine in perfect drinking window.

From a fantastic vintage, this wine didn’t disappoint. Reminiscent of a mid aged Pauillac in a good year-cedarwood with sweet and spicy (a touch of clove) fruit. Good length and balanced. Could be cellared comfortably for at least another 5 years but why wait?

A little green, herbaceous and thin on day one, more generous and expressive on the second day. Notes of herbs, spices, mint, dark fruit, bell pepper, tobacco, graphite on the nose. On the palate still not overly generous, but more balanced with decent fruit, drying tannins, good acidity and fine length. Approachable, but should improve. 91-92+

Probably the best wine of the night in a vertical of 10 vintages. Good structure & length, medium tannins but quite tight and lots of potential to improve: it certainly opened up over the course of a couple of hours.

Big green pepper nose. In the mouth, plum, more green pepper and some black pepper. But also a pinotage-like hit - burnt rubber - not my favorite. However the second day the burnt rubber had burnt away and the cab flavors were flying high. Interesting wine, and good QPR.

Decanted the wine for approximately half an hour as it seemed too closed on opening. It's quite big and spicy - cloves, red currants, strawberry and violets on the nose. Just on the right side of being too much in your face. Can be drunk now with food but I'll be curious to see if it will become more elegant with age. Luckily we have a few bottles left to experiment..

On initial opening really get a sense of coffee on the palate. As it opens, the fruit sweetnees appears along with a hint of pepper. The smokey, oak palate then takes over. There is good acidity and length is really good.
Deep ruby colour, lots of cassis, green bell pepper, cedar, chocolate, tobacco, coffee and dark plum. Aromas are developing into more of meaty, chewy, ripe fruit notes. Very well balanced; fine-textured tannins, a bit on the grainy side but with round fruit making it smooth and lovely. Ripe black fruit, oak, tobacco, green bell pepper, coffee, complex and very much a wine in its prime! Will keep for at least 10 years in total.

Apparently also a great vintage for SA. Burnished nose with herbs and chocolate and a hint of honeyed toast at first pour and then elegance and mouth filling to savor. Dusty very fine tannins that occasionally give off a bit of sour heat but I think that's settling down in the years just ahead. Finish is distinct and satisfying.

Tons of bellpepper in both the smell and the taste. The wine is very complex, despite this proverbial punch in the face of belpeppers. Integrated oak and smooth tannins.
Over the coarse of several hours the bellpeppers have calmed down and what's left is a balanced, complex and excellent wine.

No decanting and even though not at optimal wine tasting venue ( at a Jazz Club) still the wine shone through. Once again a beautiful experience. Young but approachable, white pepper on the nose, log floral at times. The oak felt well assimilated and was well ripe and juicy on the palate but in total harmony and with a classic Bordeaux feel. 92 and will only get better.

Although I have no doctrinal objection to New World wines, I crave traditionally made wines with high acid and rarely find this in New World reds. This bottle was no exception; I found it over-oaked (although consumed at a young age, I find it hard to believe the oak will ever become integrated with the fruit) and completely lacking structure. I think it's just too hot in Stellenbosch to produce a red wine to my liking. Rated -1 on a scale of -1 to 3.

Rich in fruitiness with just hints of smoke and tar. Otherwise there is the usual Cab S. stuff, blackcurrants, green bell pepper stalks as well as some chocolate and oak. Another good vintage in a very solid wine.

Greg Sherwood UK Group Visit of Wineries; 10/28/2014-10/29/2014: 69%CS; 20%Merlot; 9%CF; 2%PV 2009 was a top vintage with the combination of a cold, wet winter, mild but consistent Spring with little rain and a long, warm, dry summer. Deep- Garnet in colour. An intense, already complex nose with undergrowth, forest fruits, blackcurrant and some raspberry too. The palate accentuates the tertiary elements with excellent density to the core, gravelly texture and chewy, fairly dense tannins. The attack is promising with fresh stalky herbs, hot gravel and marmite, but it drifts to a soupy back palate that falls off a little accentuating the tannin somewhat.

Meerlust Rubicon Vertical with Hannes Myburgh (Handford Wines, London): From the excellent 2009 vintage. Floral, orange blossom, pepper on the nose. Light cocoa. Ripe, juicy and rich on the palate but also very balanced and easily mistaken blind for a classic Bordeaux. light touch of oak, good fruit across the wine, big but round tannins. Much like 2009 Bordeaux it is good to drink now but definitely has longevity. Very elegant and we will buy some for sure. 92 for now but a lot of future potential here. 70%CS/20%M/9%CF/1%PV - 14.5% Alc

A bit shy on the nose at first, with notes of rich dark fruit slowly evolving. Some green bell peppers, mint and smoke. Powerful and tannic on the palate, red fruit notes, tobacco, chocolate. Very young and tight, but showing great balance, freshness, grip and structure. An impressive blend of power and elegance. Great length. This needs a good couple of years but is very, very promising. 92-93+
