Decanted for an hour. The nose is really nice, with smoky red fruit, sour cherries and even a hint of tomato paste. The palate is dominated by racy acidity, strong tannins, red fruit with good minerality. Everything you could wish for in a Mencia, in an excellent spot right now.

Decanted for an hour. This has the typical racey red fruit I associate with Mencia, but also a bit of mocha and smoke. The palate shows nice tannins and burning red fruit. There seems to be a hint of cork taint here, so I will not score the wine, if it were not for that, I'd say this is ripe and ready and should be rather nice.

So beautiful at this point - nose well balanced between oak, cherry, cinnamon, cocoa and rose hip, on the palate well balanced mix of stir-fried yellow onion, black pepper, black currant and blackberries, with a hint of dairy. Quite thick, medium+ length, intense.

Very enjoyable wine that I've had multiple times now; nose is a little darker and muskier than my earlier bottles, but still has cherry, blood orange, along with some black currant and violet. The palate has very nice material with still notable tannins, but enough acidity and fruit to balance them nicely. Still an excellent value wine and a fun wine to explore if you have never had the Mencia grape.

Ripe cherry nose, with earthy and savory notes, and a bit of VA. On the palate, very earthy, rich cherry, and a bit of older-wine liquor. This still has some nice structure, but with the VA, is getting on in age and was nearly dead after about two hours. Drink now.

Ripe berry fruit with cedar, smoke and savoury spice on the nose. Continues on the palate with more black cherry, bramble and ripe plum. A hint of florals with still reasonably prominent tannin. Ha softened with age but was a bit flat and lacking in he mid palate. Still great wine and very complex but was expecting a little more, especially mid palate. Maybe drink younger or decant in future and see if it just needed more air??

Rich, earthy, and herbal, but with a distracting bitter lifted note. Nice structure, with chewy tannin and medium acid; full bodied. Simple, enjoyable, but with that VA note that seems to invade this wine to varying degrees, and this time with an additional off-putting bitter note.

Quite a bit of variation across bottles (mostly in amount of VA) and quite a change over time. Initially, quite rich and liquor like with darker fruit and herbs. With lots of air, the richness subsided somewhat, and the nose opened up quite a bit, revealing forest floor, herbs, dark berries, sour cherry. Low but quite chewy tannin and medium-low acid. Bit of bitterness on the finish, along with a lifted liquor note that I'm not fond of. Overall, a nice wine that can probably age another couple of years.

It did need a decant. Soft supple tannins on the back end. The Sept 7 comment is pretty spot on. Just super easy to drink. Probably has another few good years. At 50 AUD it is pretty fairly priced.

With Kelvin in 13 degrees Wine Bar. A very pleasant wine, this delivered really good value for its price. It had a nicely interesting nose, with bits of herb and bramble, scorched earth and coffee grounds mingling with a core of dark berry aromas. I liked the palate too. It had a decent depth and weight to its ripe dark berry and bramble character, but also enough clarity and freshness so that it wore its 14% very lightly indeed. Fine tannins still have a rather solid chew past the midpalate and into a nicely long finish infused with spiced notes. With time, little savoury, meat suggestions started showing up. Enjoyable, and it should improve in the next few years too.

A little darker and actually slightly more closed than my last bottle. Still overall a very nice wine. Dark fruit, floral, hint of orange peel, and spice. Palate is a little denser than I recall, but still balanced and quite tasty. Maybe closing down a little bit, but still quite enjoyable.

The wine develops substantially over time in the glass/decanter. Starting in a light, lingonberry oriented style, passing thorugh a spicy and blueberry driven middle, to a more muted and complex, rose hip, cocoa and dust oriented aura after 2-3 hours. Tannins develop over time, from virtually absent to long and sandy.
Not obviously everyone's style, but definitely deeper complexity than the price would give away.

For 25 bucks, this is another winner Spaniard. Aromas of ripe red fruit, intertwined with roasted, earthy expressions and a plush robe of tannins. Everything about this wine is balanced. Even the oak that tends to be tremendous in Spanish wines is in check here, but lively and visible in the background. Drink...

Cork barely stained. Visually viscous when poured. Pronounced fruit and savory aromas. Emphatically black cherry at first, then a touch of bitter fruit and savory elements. Plenty of acid, but doesn't result in tartness. Powerful but not all that aggressive, this wine wants to be noticed. Delivers a heck of a lot for its price.

Medium-plus ruby. Red berries and herbs on the medium-intensity nose, along with some oak notes. Fairly light bodied, with medium(-plus?) ripe tannin, medium-plus acidity. Tart red fruit and lots of minerality. Medium finish of crunchy tart berries. Drink now though will hold for another couple of years.

Appearance: Clear wine with a medium (just) ruby colour and a bright red rim.
Nose: Clean nose with a Medium+ intensity. This wine is youthful.
Fresh and aromatic on the nose - very pleasant and well balanced. Fresh cherries, anis, and rose petals are prominent. Light oak contact is present but very subtly so - light baking spices, vanilla and a barely-there chalky minerality. My favourite Bierzo bouquet so far!
Palate: Dry Medium+ acidity Medium alcohol Medium tannins Medium+ intensity Medium body Medium finish
The palate is fresh, acidic and refreshing; a nice balance between fresh fruit, light oak and chalky minerality. Finishes nicely with liquorice and spice - a shame it wasn't longer.
Very good quality Mencia from Bierzo. I think you could keep this wine for another 2-3 years but am not convinced it would benefit as the light, fruity style is it's main strength. At 12-13 euros a bottle, continues Spain's strong QPR trend - excellent value.

A ton of heat on the nose upon initial opening thankfully doesn't come through as much on the palate and blows off eventually. Probably the 5th or so vintage of this wine that I've had. Although it's first where I've recorded a tasting note, my memory suggests that this year's version is less fruit-forward than past iterations. Initially upon opening, this wine smelled rather strongly of beef blood and iron shavings with fairly pronounced tannins -- enough so that a first half-glass aperitif without food was more of an intellectual exercise than a source of pleasure. The wine then opened up and broadened a bit and went well with dinner. On the second evening, although there was still a pronounced meaty element, it was counterbalanced to a degree by some dark berry notes, some floral notes and what I pegged as eucalyptus; plus the tannins had softened to a fair degree with balanced acidity. This wine is concentrated and medium-full bodied but by no means a fruit bomb of any kind, nor did I detect any RS or other perception of sweetness. I think it will continue to improve for another few years and will still drink well til at least the turn of the decade.

This is a well made Mencía in a lighter style. It has not a great depth or complexity. Fresh fruit in the nose, with some spice and a tad of licorice, and perhaps some rusticity in the mouth. It keeps changing in the glass. Easy to drink, well made and affordable. However, it did not get to my heart and wanted me to purchase more.

Tasted via coravin alongside the 2007 Corullon cuvée from the same winemaker. Unsurprisingly, far less powerful but arguably none the worst for it. Smooth vanilla amidst some dark fruit into a relatively short finish. Not as sophisticated as the senior cuvée and difficult to spot as being 100% Mencia.

Not unlike my 2010 experience. Tasty and will be good in cellar for next 5 years...if not more. Nice round fruit with good backbone of light acid and tannin. The fruit is red raspberry and a little floral/rose like. A hint of spice on nose and finish.
For 24$ CAN - something i would buy more of for coming years...

The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like strawberry, cranberry, strawberry jam and cherry. It tastes like strawberry jam, strawberry, blackberry, raspberry and cherry. The body is medium. The wine has juicy texture. The wine finishes short. The wine has low acidity.

The wine is clear and bright with a medium ruby colour and presence of legs. The nose is clean and developing, showing medium(+) intensity aromas of blackberries, dark plums, dark cherries, black pepper, thym and hints of violents and game. The wine is dry in the mouth with a medium acidity. It has medium(+) fine-grained tannins and a high slightly warm alcohol. It has a medium(+) body and pronounced intensity flavours of blackberries, dark plums, black pepper, thym and hints of violets. The finish is medium(+).
It is a very good quality wine. It shows a very nice complexity provided by floral, spicy and herbal notes, it has a great flavour concentration and a quite decent finish. On the other hand the alcohol is slightly unbalanced, maybe some more acidity would have made the wine a bit fresher. Can drink now, but it has enough tannic structure and fruit concentration to develop some more complex tertiary aromas in the next 2-3 years.

I doften mogna jordgubbar, hallon, blåbär, lite cassis, viol, lakrits, örter, svartpeppar, fat, rostat kaffe, lite lite stall och chark. I munnen: medelfylligt+, både ljusare o mörkare frukt, kryddigt, lätt rökig ton, rätt bra bett i tanninerna, relativt frisk syra.
Bra.

Similar to prior. Very enjoyable with nice red berry fruit and acidity. Some barnyard notes and earthy/mushroomy notes add to the interest. Good value.

A well-made wine at a very sharp price. We consumed this bottle too early, I think, given the pronounced improvement in the wine on the second day. Try again in a year or two. . .

Red fruits and floral notes.
Had this on a number of occasions and still think its a bit basic and out of balance w/ regard to 14.5% alcohol.

This is a nice wine for the price. The nose is bright with red currant, raspberry, blood orange, along with lots of earth and floral scents. The palate is fresh and driven by red fruits with a hint of spice and earthiness. Overall quite tasty and good with food. A value at less than $25

Lovely dark colour. Touch of oak on the nose? Some pepper and bubblegum: and similar on the palate. I rather like this wine, as does my fussy girlfriend. It does seem like a Gamay / Syrah blend.

Assez léger comme vin, son manque d'acidité et de tannins en font un vin trop simple.
Beau fruit et des notes d'épices viennent agrémenter le tout mais c'est un peu mou et court.
Agréable sans plus.

Unimpressed by this - doe snot appear to have the weight or complexity to carry the alcohol.

PnP. Deep dark red, with purplish tones. Dark fruits, green peppers and anise. Smooth velvet tannins and balanced by a nice acidity. Great stuff.

I doften mogna jordgubbar, hallon, blåbär, lite cassis, viol, lakrits, örter, svartpeppar, fat, rostat kaffe, lite lite stall och chark. I munnen: medelfylligt+, både ljusare o mörkare frukt, kryddigt, lätt rökig ton, rätt bra bett i tanninerna, relativt frisk syra.
Bra. Friskare, stramare och mindre syltigt än när jag drack 2011:an sist.
