Absolutely brilliant, perfect to drink now!! Others who wrote that it is on the verge of being over the hill, i disagree. AMAZING fruit, blueberries, blackberries, plums and blackcurrant. Sechuan pepper, bell pepper and middle eastern spice. Drink or hold.

Had with 2009 Virginie de Valandraud with Tim and Katie, 2010 Penfolds 389, and so, initially we thought this was a one dimensional fruit bomb, although impressive after 10 years. After some air however, tannins still driving strong, began to open up into a nice wine. The strong fruit and medium tannins speak to the quality of this fruit and good backbone which we agree has many more years left, although unsure if likely to improve.

Poured a glas right after opening the bottle, it felt a bit muted at first, both on the nose and in taste, so I let it breath for 2 hours in the decanter. After that it started to open up a bit. The nose showed blueberries, ripe blue fruit that really shows the age of the wine, vanilla, some mint is definitely showing in the background as well as star anise. In the taste it really shows the maturity of the wine, it feels like it's past its prime but definitely puts on a show, round soft tannins, big powerful mouthfeel that reveals its terroir, medium acidity and fairly structured. A good wine overall but it's time to drink up!

This was my last of 6 and I wish I had waited this long to drink the other as I really think it is now at it’s peak! Velvety, full of currents and plum. We paired it with a fire pit grilled steak and it was magnificent! Merci my friend Rolland L for sharing this great buy with me back in 2015!
Nearing its peak this is a fantastic Stags Leap true to its style of sophisticated powerful cabs with refined black current and plum fruit with balanced velvety tannins. This wine is now well integrated, layered and very elegant, creamy with a long finish. Perfect pairing with a filet mignon.

Meh. You should expect more from a winery with such a great history and the 2012 vintage. Nothing really wrong with the wine, but it was just kinda flat. Maybe 8 years was too long, but I don’t think it’s an age problem.
The bottom line is that you can find much better wine at lower price points. I think SL is just mailing it in at this point.

Really great relaxing evening at home with my wife during the self imposed quarantine. Low acid, nice fruit but mild enough not to be plucky. I wish I had another bottle!

had it with traditional french cassoulet. smooth taste, very light for a cab. The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. The body is medium/full. The wine has oily texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity.

Exceeded expectations. Deep indigo color in the glass. Berry and clove on the nose. Dark cherry, raspberry and some earthy notes on the palate. Medium body, grippy tannins and a medium warm oaky finish. A little more oaky than I like and a bit disjointed on the palate but very approachable.

Decanted off a fine sediment about an hour before drinking. Lovely blackberry, sage and black cherry aromas. Blackcurrants come thru on the palate along with a touch of cocoa and vanilla. Nice smooth silky tannins. Medium bodied and with a decent finish. Most enjoyable with a rib eye steak.

Left to decant for about 4h. Tons of sediment in the bottle so the decant was done carefully! Paired with thick juicy steak. Deep plum colour. Beautiful long finish. Notes of tobacco and chocolate, not at all fruit forward. Really enjoyed this one...
Drank consistent with my previous notes. Caveat, very closed upon opening, acidic. Opened to a decent amount after a 3 hour decant. Was surprisingly more developed and integrated on Day 2.

Quintessential Stags Leap wine. Time has helped this wine which is at or just past peak. Presents with a touch of caramel and cassis and light black cherry along with a hint of green peppers, dry and vanilla.
Was a bit bland after an hour of decanting, but opened nicely a few hours after. Was even better on day 2. Dink now.

Our history with Artemis dates to 2013, enjoying it with friends at their Goodyear, Arizona condo. Big food, big sky and sun, desert air and a big earthy wine.
On the nose it hits with blackberry, leather and black licorice. And yes, it hits! It has a grittiness to it, smoky & peppery. We won't crack this for a simple movie night as a drink-alone with grapes, sausages and cheeses. This wine begs- needs an offset or balance to it; a NY Strip sounds about perfect. Maybe Texas brisket or even Cajun steak bites... It's not a wine that fades into the background as a luscious treat with great stories shared by loved ones. It wants to be part of the conversation. It's like Pepe Le Pew, "DO NOT IGNORE ME, MY SWEET!"
None of this is bad, nor, particularly good... It just is. A flavorful soft-punch to the mouth.
Artemis needs an hour or so open... It seems to lack the refined silk of Duckhorn Migration or the cashmere suppleness of Mollydooker's Boxer (yeah we get it- different grapes but both those are far less pricey). We like it, but we only buy it when we see it for $44 or less. Anything more than that, and there are other choices for us.
As far as our tasting notes to-date go, this is a top steak wine.
Grill up a rib eye, crack an Artemis, and if you enjoy cigars too, it'll be a night for a Macanudo dipped in Johnnie Gold...
It's why we work so hard.

Warm, plummy and oddly i got some rhubarb. WTF. A touch of vanilla makes this a smooth tipple. Not particularly complex but absolutely fine (meaning it's fine, rather than it's okay) with a nice steak on a Friday night. Wouldn't buy anymore at this price point compared to the delights to be found in the motherland of Cabernet at better prices, but this is a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. Bit heavy on alcohol levels though. 14.5% is a bit toppy for me.

In which the oak monster quietly smokes a pipe in an armchair by the window, contemplating his berry patch....
Deep, purple-imbued red with high optical density and reflectivity. Medium to medium plus intensity nose, with aromatic compounds, dark fruits (blueberry, plum, cassis), and vanilla oak saw dust. Full and concentrated body, with a smooth texture and medium acidity- just shy of syrupy, this is controlled, and has more of a thin milk-shake mouthfeel. Flavours are of medium plus intensity, and simple in profile, with an entry showing dark sweet fruits and vanilla-dipped and sugar-coated red fruits. The midpalate stays full, but not many layers emerge, just more of the same with perhaps a touch of savoriness toward the finish, which has good length and decent intensity, showing light pipe smoke and warm jelly toast. Almost has some elements of candy and chocolate in there, but this is really subtle, and comes on as it thins out while it's going down.
At least the oak monster wants to invite you for a nice sit-down for some pie here, which can be pleasant since he isn't jamming splinters down your throat, but why doesn't he take a shower once in a while? His dusty house and remote living seems to have created a funky old wood smell that permeates the nose and sticks cloyingly to the nostrils and palate. Still, not a total loss, as this has rustic charm, and if there were more outdoors and less hot berry jam boiling in the kitchen, then it would be much more complete. Here, we get a simple profile that is easy-going, but distracting after the slightly singed oak saw dust takes hold of everything else and masks it. Not a bad place to visit, but certainly not somewhere you want to stay the night.
Seems like this could have been stunning, but instead, falls down to average, which is too bad given the price point. Pass for me, but great if you like warm berry jam mixed into your vanilla milk shake. Not sure it can improve, as there does not seem to be much to take over if the oak integrates- it seems the oak monster does not blend into his surroundings, but rather, he dominates them. This is his house after all.

Drank from mag. Oak and dark fruit dominate, after time in the glass the finish was smooth and supple. Classic Napa Cab, but sometimes pay for more name than wine quality in Artemis.

consistent vintage, inky purple in the glass, tight right of the bottle & eases nicely after a 1 hour decant. Pairs well with marbled beef as a steakhouse wine. Full bodied without being too heavy on the oak or jam as most napa cabs.

Blackberry and licorice nose. Red and black berries make up a medium-full body. Smooth tannins take a slight back seat, but make themselves present. Some acidity round this out to be a very well balanced cab, drinking beautifully on its own but pairs really well with meats. Great cab but a poor QPR at its regular $60 price tag.

These are consistently good. Drank it along side the Stags Leap Cab Sauv 2013 (different winery) and we all preferred the Artemis. The Stags Leap district's earthy and loamy notes are present and the finish is big and wet.

Not sure what happened here. Unlike other vintages, this was severely over concentrated and thus clumsy all around. We noted French and American oak were used and the dill aromas of the American oak were not well integrated. We tasted next to the 2013 which showed balance all around, what we expect from Artemis. Proceed with caution.

Medium weight wine with a crimson color with very slight ruby rim. Red currant, light leather, and raspberry nose. Very light slow tears with low tannins and no noticeable acid. Red currant, red cherry, and mild plum palate with a long cherry finish. Good wine that will pair well with cheese, olives, and a mellow steak. Would definitely recommend and will buy again for myself.

Consistent with my previous notes. Seems to be aging well, as it seems to open up fairly quickly. Dark fruits and eucalyptus on the nose, smooth medium body filled with blackberry with a hint of tobacco near the end. Nice finish. This seems to be a staple in my cellar, along with Honig, which are both great cabs in the $40 range. Not an everyday wine, but great with a good steak here and there.

The wine looks crimson colored. The legs are slow. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like red currant, toast and cedar. It tastes like black currant (cassis), plum, oak and stoniness. The body is full. The wine has satin-like texture, finishes long and has medium acidity.

Simply - just a really nice Napa Cab. First you notice the fruit on the nose, then the fruit on the palate along with some oak, but not too much oak. Good balance in my opinion. A friend that joining us described it as elegant - rich, smooth, and enjoyable. We have also enjoyed Artemis while dining out with the same opinion as it pairs very well with a nice dinner. Glad I have few more in the cellar! Enjoy now.

Purchased at Von's for less than $40. Opened last night. Quite dark ruby purple with near opacity. Good viscosity, too. Nose has a good dose of oak and cassis. Decent in the mouth with spicy plummy fruit and a certain femininity. Falls well short of the signature wine of this estate, but still decent. Finish goes on for a good bit. 5-10-15-8: 88/100.

Second bottle opened over the evening with friends. Followed a 2012 Freemark Abbey, which was fairly tannic, so this seemed much smoother and more balanced. A really great wine, once it comes around after a bit of air. Smooth fruit and easy drinking. Just enough acidity lets this cut through a steak or any seasoned meat, or great on its own. if you can get this wine at a good price ($30-$40), it is well worth it! The 2013, which I had at a restaurant a few months back, is even better, so in keeping my eye out for it as well. This is a staple in my cellar for a nice midrange wine.

No formal note. Had after two other bottles of wine, but at a restaurant. It was damn good right out of the bottle. Plum and prune, currants. Had it been decanted it would have been deadly. I want to go get a bottle for my fridge. Tomorrow!

I aerated this wine in its own bottle for 14 hours prior to drinking it. Maybe I aerated it too long or maybe 2012 was just a mediocre year for this label.
I'ved tasted the Artemis many times and this was my second time trying the 2012 Artemis. First time, I thought it was bottle variation or not enough air so I didn't post a review about it. This time around, I was slightly disappointed but what can you say, the wine is not that expensive. You can get it at Costco for $40.
The Artemis is on the lighter side. Lots of red fruits and toasty oak in the finish. Very pretty wine. Used to be my favorite value wine until I started tasting more of the heavy hitters. I tried the 2005 Artemis little over a year ago and man that one was Good Game. It was very very very delicious. 2012 not so much.

After reading some earlier reviews I decided to decant this about an hour before drinking. There was a small amount of fine sediment left in the bottle. The wine had some nice aromas of ripe berry fruit and tobacco leaf. I thought it was a classy style of Napa cab, with blackcurrants and some spicy oak, a clean long finish, and very smooth although the tannins should support aging for a good number of years yet.

Tasted over two nights, a gift to Kathy from a fellow worker, label showed fading due to sun and light. Nose of black cherry, sage, and earth, more of the same on the palate, touch simple, lacks fruit and winemaking skill, medium body, medium finish.
The more I've had Artemis the more I've grown to appreciate the wine. It's a solid Cab that does its job well, if not for a few more dollars than I would like to see, but that's not a big deal since it's still reasonable.

Tasted side by side with the 2013, both decanted for 1hr+, drank over the following 2hrs. We went back and forth which was better but ultimately believe the '13 is better right now. The 2012 has a cleaner fruit but less rich, it may evolve better. It will be interesting to repeat the comparison in 2-5yrs.

Black fruit on the nose with light earthy and anise notes. With a proper decanting, this wine shows it's consistent characteristics, but this year's vintage is slightly less balanced than recent years, with a bit of acidity.

2hr+ decant. Sharpness, acidity didn't go away with decant, similar to a $12 blend from Napa had earlier in the night. Going to my 'do not drink' -list.

Obviously a CA cab on the nose and palate so it gets points for typicity. Other than that it was entirely forgettable. Nothing stood out, no "wow" moments. Very generic and uninteresting. For $51 the QPR is very low. Would have been better off with a $12 H3.

Solid but unspecial. Less luscious and more herbal than a typical, good Napa Cabernet. While that may be the house style, I'll buy a traditional, left bank Bordeaux if I want herbal.

Ordered and drank at a restaurant. Well bodied and carrying plenty of fruit. Could have used more time in the bottle. That said, the wine did open up after about a 1/2 hour. Brought the remainder home (about 1/3 of the bottle) and the last bit was great the second night. Pairs well with a rich, savory meal.

It has been a few years since I have had a vintage of Artemis that really stood out to me. I would not say that its a bad wine, but it does not leave me wanting more. The fruit is forward but the tannin and finish leave a lot to be desired. Ripe (maybe overripe) red fruits cover the palate and black berries fade quickly to a short finish. I'm looking forward to trying the FAY and S.L.V this week.

Had at a restaurant. Pop and pour, and was splitting 5 ways so I only got one glass. Was a little too much oak initially, which blew off with a little time in the glass. Could see liking this more with more air or more time in the cellar. Nothing special. But overall pretty solid cab with steaks.

I tried this with the usual cheese and crackers, hanging out once again before catching a plane at Newark. Intriguing nose of spice, cranberries, and toasted bread. It has the familiar extracted if smooth red cherry and plum presentation, balanced with some acid on the finish and a lingering oak touch in the aftertaste. Well constructed and more complex than the '11.

Bright ruby color. This is stereotypical young California Cabernet on both nose and palate. Vanilla and red fruit aromatics dominate the nose. This is very straightforward in the mouth, with abundant sweet fruit and ample oak, though little in the way of terroir or tertiary flavor development. Moderately tannic, not so much so that it prevents current consumption, nor that it demands long-term cellaring. This is my first experience with this producer, thus I am unable to comment on the long-term aging potential of this wine. For now it seems like a basic wine made in a crowd-pleasing style, inferior to others at this price point (Chappellet's Signature, Priest Ranch, and Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards spring immediately to mind).

Hints of vanilla, damp winter grass, cassis, clove perhaps and spice. Smooth, soft, medium bodied followed by a medium finish. Drinking well now and would keep for a couple years but may not improve, however overall a tad underwhelming for price point. Maybe I needed to let it breath longer, as it wasnt decanted and finished within about 2 hours. Easy drinking though

Medium red, ripe red fruits. Cherry, red licorice, and a slight bubblegum note. Some tobacco, red berries and light leather on the palate. And a little too much burn on the finish. Very dark purple red color. Tasting pour, tasted twice. I enjoyed the first pour from a bottle that had been open awhile. The second pour seemed a bit on the green side and didn't justify the return trip. There's plenty of ripe dark fruits, licorice, and spice, but this needs some time. 89-90pts.

A very sweet nose on this cabernet: brown sugar in the forefront, with a bit of pepper but softened by vanilla. On the palate, cedar notes were there alongside more pepper, bitter chocolate with hints of crowberry and wild currants; overall, a moderate tannic grippiness. It finished a bit oaky and a little hot to my tastes, ending with more a sensation of alcohol than any lingering secondary notes.
The hot 2012 vintage in Napa has produced what is perhaps an atypically riper, extracted style that may put some off. Don't get me wrong, though, this is still a well-made wine, just one meant to be drunk in the next couple years.
From a tasting I came back to this several times: Vibrant fruit but not overly complex. Silky mid-palate and pleasant finish. Finish is a little sweet. Decanted and drank / tasted over three hours. Modest improvement.

A friend that joining us described it as elegant - rich, smooth, and enjoyable. We have also enjoyed Artemis while dining out with the same opinion as it pairs very well with a nice dinner.

It has the familiar extracted if smooth red cherry and plum presentation, balanced with some acid on the finish and a lingering oak touch in the aftertaste.

Better than expected, red berry and plum, with slightly sweet spice and smooth finish.

Vindredi (Barcode (Bellevue, WA)): Tasted blind. Rich and plush nose, with chocolate, sweet red cherry, and perhaps a hint of cotton candy. Soft and fruit forward body. Mostly red cherry, strawberry, and a touch of vanilla. Seems a touch flabby, with lower acidity, and finishes a bit short.

I liked this wine because it popped and poured well. Dark fruit predominates on the nose.some vanilla and barrel spice. Blackberry and cassis on the palate. Long finish.

Medium red, ripe red fruits. Cherry, red licorice, and a slight bubblegum note. Some tobacco, red berries and light leather on the palate. And a little too much burn on the finish. Still very young, and possibly one of the better Artemis vintages, but there are much better options out there for the price point.

89-90pts.

A basic stags leap district wine. An entry Level effort of some ripe forward black fruit with an hint of smoke and some oak. Nothing to distinguish this wine. Better options at this price point of $40.

Good but wasn't overly impressed. Very smooth for such a young wine, and solid fruit up front, but for me it lacked in structure and depth on the back end. May develop if it sits for a bit.

Showing a bit too much oak toady that dominates the sweet, ripe, black cherry and licorice notes. Soft, forward and easy to drink, there is a bit of dusty tannins in the finish.

solid Napa cab. Very enjoyable for such a young wine. Big and bold flavors yet not to the point of overpowering.

Solid wine. It was very approachable for it's young age. Didn't blow me away, but I wasn't unhappy either. Solid wine, a little high in price, but you pay for the name.

Tasted blind. This came off as rather simple. Nice luscious mouthfeel and good cabernet fruit, but not much else going on. Everyone was surprised, expensive and one dimensional. 89/90

Well put together where the fruit, tannin and secondary flavors all blend together to make a very pleasant drinker. Scents of cocoa and a palate of clean dark fruit and a bit of cola.

Deep purple color with good clarity. Light fruit to the nose. Medium tannins hints of black currant, hints of pepper, a very slight hint of chocolate. A very smooth finish.
