Deep Ruby red with nose of ripe cherries and berries. Nice mouthfeel with fine tannins and some notes of eucalyptus, pepper, sour cherries at the end. Medium long finish. Quite delicious and opens up really nicely after about an hour. What’s not to like about this wine! Glad I got 5 more!

Evening session at ESBK. Drank in Grassl Cru. Pop and poured. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity with aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry liqueur, small hint of eucalyptus leaf. Developed. On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), integrated high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavorus of black cherry sweet liqueur, blackcurrant, black licorice, very thin layer of eucalyptus. Long finish. Good quality. Drink up. As good as it gets already.

Still drinks well in 2021. Bottle was stored well based on fill level and cork condition. Excellent nose and fruit flavors. Slightly tannic when drinking right after opening, none on second day. Never tried this wine in its youth, but enjoyed it now.

Very smooth, still some fruit but has lost the original wow factor. A bit flat, but enjoyable. One left to drink soon. Fortunately some later years in cellar (and one bin end '98 which was for me the best I have tasted). **

Double decant. I must confess to being nervous about this wine but it does seem to be rather pleasant - black currant fruit on the nose underpinned by spice, cream, vanilla, slight chocolate, biscuit and cedar with more of the same on the palate backed by firm, slightly chalky, but integrated tannins. It's a little tart but this bodes well for supper.

Medium Ruby, with a faint orange tinge on the rim. Medium nose of cedar, camper and blackcurrant, developing to fully developed. Medium (+) acid, medium (+) clinging and slightly drying tannins. Cedar, spicy balck cherry, blackcurrant, with medium (+) alcohol, medium (+) flavour intensity and medium (+) length. Developing still, with further tertiary development possible, and plenty of primary fruit left. Very Good to Outstanding, to still be at this stage after 14 years is quite impressive. Cork.

WEA portfolio tasting (Asia Grand): Our last wine of the evening. Like the Donnhoff, this was BYO'ed by one of us attendees and not part of the WEA portfolio. It has been a long time since I last had a Cabernet from Down Under. After all the Pinots, this came across as a bit "over-weight". Dark-ruby, nose was a mix of tobacco, coffee, indian-ink. Palate was dense, dark-fruited, ripe. Drinkable, but still seemed young. Would've been very good with a steak. I'd like to taste this again with more age on it...

Drank at a friends.Decanted and it was quite tight upon the first sip. Needs time to breathe, swirl and let it open. Damp forest floor and then the fruits come through. Got better into glass two & three. You can tell it has class, again though, was waiting for an 'Ahhhh' moment. Well balanced and structured, with a medium finish at very best. Its a solid 90 for me, but could be a few points higher for a more experienced palate.

Decant 1 hour prior to drinking, drank over 4 hours. Damp and leafy, mulberry perhaps, good mouth coating with sweet fruit still present leading to a dry slightly chewy just short of a medium finish. Well balanced. Drinking well now, cant see it improving in the bottle.

Cherries, eucalyptus, graphite, mints, oak spices, and tobacco leaves in the nose; black berries and cherries, licorice, and oak spices on the creamy and juicy palate; anise, cherries, dark chocolate, and mild spices in the heavy and long finish; overall, a typical new world wine; 89-90 points.
Still deep concentrated dark cherry colour. Fresh fruit and vanilla nose. Excellent acidity allowing balance to the concentrated blackcurrant jam fruit and ripe tannins. Still plenty of life in this very drinkable Australian.

Dark plummy in colour; black fruits, dark plums, and some menthol on the nose. On the palate, more dark fruits with some creme de cassis; finish is nice though the back palate is somewhat hollow. Drinking well as it is, tannins are pretty much non-existent.

In a very nice place. Mint/menthol on the nose. Palate mostly secondary with moist leaves, leather, bramble and muted black fruits. Pretty full bodied and just below medium acid. Tannin still noticeable but soft.

Have had a couple of flawed bottles recently but three bottles served at dinner last night were all in perfect shape. Needs decanting but only because the sediment is quite heavy - can be drunk right from the moment it's opened. It's come together nicely with the menthol and eucalyptus flavours I remember becoming softer, the tannins are round and there is plenty of black fruit, maybe even some leather and tar.

This is really coming around. I've had three this year and one was better than the next. Tannins have melted, revealing a soft, complex, almost Bordeaux-like character. Fat, but still elegant. Good length. I don't know if this will get better, but it's terrific now.

Lovely wine tonight. Better than when last tried in March 2011. This wine is very together - plenty of mint/eucalyptus - with a moderate (but not super long) length. I'm scoring it higher than last time, maybe that's bottle variation or maybe it's better by itself (last time i tried it alongside a 98 I think).

Superbe !

2011 Simple Series V: Benchmark Aussies 10-Years and Older (The Moomba, Circular Road): Good, but not quite outstanding. This was another Bordeaux ringer on the nose, a bit riper in its fruit expression than the first two wines maybe, with sweet cassis at the fore, but this was framed with nice tobacco and cigar scents. The palate was soft and round, with more ripe cassis again taking centre-stage, before some brambly notes emerged on the mid-palate and towards the finish. Very yummy fruit. Like the other two First Growths though, this too was marked with some alcohol, but it is not exactly imbalanced. There was some acidity, just not as well integrated as I would have liked. Finish showed a touch more leafy notes and sweet fruit before it flattened out somewhat, with the wine going a bit limp - I thought it needed some more freshness here. All in all, a good wine, but probably the least impressive of the three on the flight.

A very pleasant surprise. Dark ruby colour and very fat on the glass. Promising complex nose of red fruit (cherry, strawberry, red currant) and quite intense oaks. Unexpectedly smooth attack, balanced tannins and lively acidity. Rather chewy. Fruitiness is amazing: red cherry, black cherry, strawberry. Cedar and hickory and some spiciness (thyme and rosemary) on the mid-palate. Pleasant absence of exaggerated oaks, which the nose suggested. Small blemish is its unfortunate medium length.

Classic coonawarra palate with good fruit concentration, earth, well integrated cedary oak, with slight dose of spice. Nice aromas of earth, cassis and subtle oak scents on a dark fruit core. Lots of cassis and vibrant acidity on the palate on this wine. Nothing complex but straightforward and a nice departure from anything overly jammy. Cab/Merlot Blend using French oak. Medium length. Drinking well now.

Dark red/black colour lightening at the rim, and throwing a ton of sediment all over the glass/inside of the bottle. The nose starts out showing bright blackberry and plum flavours with some earth and green herbs, and with time notes of cedar, leather and toast emerge. Medium to full bodied on the palate with cassis, cedar and toast over softer notes of tobacco and chewy, grippy tannins. There's also pretty good acidity that keeps it from ever feeling heavy. Lovely long finish that leaves a mix of sweet plum/berry flavours and more bitter earthy notes on the back of the tongue. Great to sit with over a few hours and a good meal.

Popped and poured, but let it sit in the glass about a half hour before trying, then drank it over the next three hours. This needs a lot of time to open up, but it's worth the wait - initially, it's very tightly wound and thin, both on the nose and on the palate. After a few hours, everything opens up. On the nose, sour cherries, oak, peppermint, and cocoa. The palate shows bell peppers front and center, with red and black fruit, cedar, chocolate, and firm tannins kicking in on a medium finish. This is not a typical Australian wine, with a dominant vegetal component on the palate and the fruit very much in the background. Maybe a little thin on the midpalate, although it has beefed up with time in the glass. With the structure and firmness of the tannins, this one has a lot of life left - no hurry.

Sydney good food and wine show (Sydney Exhibition Centre): Still a bit young, lovely bouquet but the palate doesn't really come to the party.

Century Wine Club - October 2005 (Langton's Classification Tasting) (Shakey Tables, Rothbury, Hunter Valley): Shiney red hue's leading into huge tannins. Sweet fruits giving a classy front palette but ending short. Full body showing all the traits of good fruit, but overall the wine was unbalanced with no structure. Perhaps a bad bottle
