Plenty of richness here with good intensity and delicious flavors of dark red and blue fruits and a hint of menthol. There is good acidity underneath that keeps it fresh and just a hint of oak left to be resolved. The finish is already complex with notes of dark spices and charred berries. Another 5 years to peak I think. 92+

(Blind tasting) Full, deep nose. Oaky coco-nut and butter. Dark fruit and plum. Coffee and toast. Very primary and youthful. Hints of violets and cherry. Very fat. Fullish, dense and very concentrated palate. Still young. Quite monolitic. But also hard, unyielding and austere. Very oaky and fat. Guessed on Cabernet, not Bordeaux. But quite hard to pin-point. Needs more time in cellar. (5-10 years)

Cassis, black currents with hint of wood smoke on the nose. After some vigorous swirling some blue fruits begin to emerge. The palate had more black and blues fruits, some graphite and fine tannins. Medium plus acidity and a medium to long finish.
Overall drinking very well today but still young with a long life ahead.

It’s been a few years since I last drank this but I remembered enough to prep the bottle well which included opening the night before and leaving it in the cellar and then decanting the bottle just prior to drinking which helped open up the wine suitably for drinking. Lovely nose of cassis, with a taut palate still filled with medium tannins. The wine provides a lovely explosion of floral elements like roses and violets whose flavors remain in the mouth for a long time. Lovely and time to start drinking my other bottles over the next few years

3hr Audoze. Served double blind as a mystery wine. I found this to be brutish and quite tannic upfront with opulent dark fruit and cinnamon bark, bittersweet chocolate, and velvety clay mineralité. Very young and primary right now. Can tell it's well made and that time will be kind to this. Hold for 10+ years at least.

By Coravin @The Omnia, Zermatt. Very dark and dense in colour. Black fruits, light violet notes, quite toned down on the sweet oak vs other vintages and other neighbours of it. Quite ripe. Young? Yes. Opulent wine full of potential. The nose is at this stage a lot more expressive than the palate which is quite grippy and firm. Patience will pay off here we feel. Needs a good 10yrs. Pointless to rate in our view at this stage and we would not really recommend opening one any ime soon.

Had this about a month ago. No way could I rate it yet. From memory a wall of tannin like I have never experienced! Some delicious black fruits peaked out a couple of times but at this point it was undrinkableIMHO, I decanted for about 4 hours. Hold for a long time.

Nose was pretty muted. Can't quite put a finger on any scent. Olives and mushrooms maybe? On the palate, typical cab/merlot flavors, but very very bold and dense with a long mineral finish. I'd give it a few more points because of its boldness.

Powerful expression of Bolgheri terroir. Somewhat more oaky than the 2011 Oreno but less oaky than the 2010 Fontalloro. This ranks among the most massively tannic wines that I have encountered...and I thoroughly enjoy tannic grip. My first impression upon smelling the wine was that it needed five to seven years in the cellar but after tasting it the time frame jumped to twelve to fifteen. A deeply substantive wine but it left me with the lingering question of whether the soul-destroying tannin wall (if that is a thing) will integrate. If not, this will be a powerful wine that requires a pairing of fatty braised meats, but, if so, it could be incredibly special. I would put the odds of it integrating in twelve+ years at 60/40 or better. For now, stash it and forget it...unless you need a cavity filled and the dentist is out of local anesthetic. If so, this will do the trick; after two sips the gums go numb. 94-96.

Initial nose of blooded beef burger. Palatial in the glass; substantial and simultaneously sophisticated. Generous fruit, with some sour apple, and elegant tannin. Classically European restrained sophistication.

I'd have to say that this was a neat find while in San Gimignano...a great little store that had a eurocave gas system. Hints of pyridines and cassis, framed by oak and a melange of earth-driven notes. The fruit is strong and the cabernet/cocoa-powder tannins heavily influenced by tannin in the oak. On the nose, hints of spices, mushroom, and cassis are all framed by a hint of alcohol. This one deserves some time sideways. Outstanding!!!

This wine was a little tight and reserved, don't think it was opened for very long before I had a taste of it. With that said, you can really taste the quality in this wine. Big fruit, lots of dark black and blue fruit. Already quite complex, spice, herbiness. I agree with with other tasters here, I dont think this will be as long lived as some better vintages. A little more fruit forward than I am used to from this producer. Very good effort here, although I dont think this will be a great Ornellaia, it definitely doesn't disappoint.
Fine grained, silky tannins.

Deep ruby color with blackberry, cedar, and hints of tobacco on the nose. Ripe, opulent, concentrated black fruit on the palate with remarkably fine grained, drying tannins and incredible length. Drinks like a young stallion that's yet to be broken.
Spicy notes, toasted oak and dark berries aromas. On the palate sumptuous, approachable with incredible fruit concentration and silky tannins, ending powerful and long.

Ai Fiori's Ornellaia/Masseto dinner (Ai Fiori (Langham Hotel on 5th Ave)): Tasted alongside the '11 and it was like meeting two brothers with completely different personalities and yet you could just tell that they both have the dad's eyes. This wine was open for business and while generally I think Ornellaia needs years to really reach it's potential, I'm not sure this one won't peak a bit on the early side. Black fruits, good backbone, nice leather, spice, a bit more fruit forward than the other wines we were drinking. Once it was also being compared to the '10 and the Masseto it came across as more over the top.

James Suckling - Great Wines of Italy (SF): Even more savory stewed bell pepper pyrazines than the previous two. There’s a small but bright pinprick core of pure cabernet cassis, framed by a savory combination of brett and new oak. Powerful and still unintegrated. The fruit is strong in this one - cabernet blackcurrant. The cocoa-powder tannins are medium plus and sort of stick out to me - they’re sweetish, and oak-influenced. The aromatics are super complex and evolving - spices, mushroom, cassis, cocoa, orange peel, dog fur. Elevated alcohol, acid, and tannins.

Gambero Rosso Trebicchieri San Francisco. Nose of red cherry, red currants, and a touch of heat, more of the same on the palate, rich fruit, lovely to taste with lots of soft tannins, could be richer and bigger, big body, brooding fruit, needs 4 years to peak, long finish.

#AthensRedfinewinetasting2015 Dark ruby. Very punchy nose with highly concentrated dark fruit, oak, sweet spice, ground coffee beans. Tight and firm, with the tannins almost drying towards the end, high acidity and quite fresh too.Very very young, the balance is not there but sure, it will be a great wine after some years but I think Guado al Tasso offers better value imho.

Ornellaia Master Class with Alessandro Lunardi (Morrell Wine (1 Rockefeller Plaza)): Warm vintage, but very dry. This is a softer wine than I remember Ornellaia's being. A touch more approachable young (which isn't to say that I'd recommend drinking now - this will be much better in another 5-10 years). The person we were tasting with noted this was a wine he felt like was ready for the immediate consumption, but that is just not my palette. It's also kindof closed down. More time and I get red current. Still mostly fruit dominant. Looking forward to seeing whether it develops the secondary/tertiary flavors. My third favorite of the Ornellaias we tried, but still interesting.

The nose is immediately seductive on this young open wine. Aromas are dark and deep of plummy merlot, tar, light roast coffee, black truffle, forest floor, pine needles, dark cherry, cassis, and dark pomegranite. Palate is silky, medium in tannin with elevated acid. Really nice mineral and plum/cherry notes along the long finish. 95+. Fantastic.

For ornellaia this seems more approachable in this early stage than other vintages. Nose of coffe, butter crumble, bacon, smoke, plums, spices, tobacco and minerals. On the palate there's obviously a massive structure but the youthful flavours are all there. Espresso, leather, mint, dark berries and minerals. Will probably be ready around 2022.

(Royal Princess Super Tuscan Tasting). This is a truly amazing wine, surprisingly drinkable now in its youth, but with excellent potential to fully develop. It is both powerful and masculine, yet at the same time eloquent and refined. This wine is intense with a very dark, inky violet to black color and a nose of violets, blackberries, mint, and marzipan. It is also big, concentrated, and chewy. The wine tastes of blackberries, black cherries, expresso, sweet spices, and dark chocolate. There are also hints of menthol and eucalyptus. This wine is full bodied with a creamy mouth feel. It has medium acidity with a lengthy finish and silky smooth tannins. The wine still needs at least 5 to 10 years of cellarage to fully mature.

Vindredi (Bellevue, WA): Tasted blind. Sweet, dark fruit, with dark chocolate and orange on the nose. Dense and lush, this is a big wine. With chewy tannins and a drying finish, this has the structure to age for a while. Well put together, if a bit young and tight.

Drank at Ornellaia tasting introducing this vintage. Silky smooth, with black and red fruits--blackberries & some cassis apparent. Quite tannic, though not particularly grippy. A bit tight, of course, given its extreme youth, but this wine has all the elements to make it a great wine to drink in some 4-5 years' time.

The nose was elegant, expressing cool red toned fruit, as well as black currant, hints of cola and a beautiful perfume of herbal mint with hints of tobacco leaf. On the palate, it was silky smooth, yet quite closed, showing dark weighty textures, which nearly masked its fine-grained tannin. Flavors of tart red berry with a hint of herbs lingered long into the finish. This is a very pretty expression of Ornellaia, in need of time in the cellar for the palate to catch up to the bouquet, and may warrant a higher score down the road.

Dinner at Bottega del Vino (Verona, Italy): Very new but surprisingly drinkable, deep color and extraction, seemingly modern exterior with vanilla lots of sweet fruit and polish to the tannin, but this is very substantial at its core which should prove very ageworthy; very nice.

Dark ruby.
