E&R's Prequal to 25: Nebbiolo: The wine I was most excited about tasting in the lineup as I have a magnum and wanted to check in with it, but there's nothing to see here, as this bottle is totally messed up. This wine should *maybe* be drinking OK at this "young" age, but this wine is totally maderized and funky, like drinking an 80 year old Barolo from an unknown producer. Absolutely no fruit whatsoever. This wine should be singing at current, or... I was hoping it at least would start to be singing (but thought it may still be too young). So no useful information was gained by trying this bottle. For shame.

Prelude 25-an E&R Nebbiolo joint (E&R Wines, Portland OR): I'm going to cry. A unicorn bottle and one I've been dying to try. Sadly, this bottle is maderized and someone was a bad bad person in how it was stored. I are not happy about this. booo

E&R Prequel 25 - Mostly older nebbiolo (Portland, OR): This had a complex but fully mature nose with black fruit, sous-bois, Indian spices, and tar. I found the palate very attractive but clearly past the peak. With air it mounted an impressive comeback and developed a lovely bottle sweetness and texture. Wow, gorgeous despite being past prime. Some experienced tasters felt this was clearly maderized. I will defer to their experience and analysis there, but I loved it regardless -- at least for a tiny 2 oz pour.

A mature nose with som soy that blew off leaving lovely balsam, tar and roses. the sis expansive and deep with terrific sap and textural richness carried wit effort or heaviness. Outstaindg and then some, but not he best bottle I have had of this. I had very high expectations for this bottle and there are no great wines, just great bottles. This one was still outstanding, just not magical like it can be. It did gain depth over the several hours we drank it. 95

Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VI (Chicago, IL): This bottle lived up to its promise, unlike my previous experience with it. In fact, it got better with air and was the best at the end of the evening. This was fully mature, with a robe of dark fruit and just a hint of volatility on the nose that added to its allure. The fruit is ripe and full-bodied, but still fresh. Tannins are on the verge of full resolution; there's a lot of them here, but most of them have turned velvety.

White Truffles & Nebbiolo (Chez Nanda): Perhaps the most disappointing wine relative to sky-high expectations. Nothing wrong with this wine as it has it all - red cherries, spice and florals - with youthful fruit and structure. Just missing that extra gear.

Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume IV (Chicago, IL): I was very much looking forward to this bottle, but I think overall it was just a little more tired than it could have been (especially coming off the freshness of the 1979 Gallina and 1971 Turco). This comes off with a fruit profile that belongs to a fairly ripe year, but the exuberant fruit does seem to be tiring out. Very good extract and depth here, but based on this bottle and the current market pricing, the value proposition should be questioned.

The ‘89 started out reserved in the glass, but with time slowly began to reveal it’s charms. Here I found dark red fruits with hints of sweet herbs, leather, washed cheese rind, and minerals in a poised and remarkably fresh expression. On the palate, cool-toned, dark red fruits gave way to polished fine tannin, with hints of sweet herbs, inner rose and a dusting of spice. The finish was long, and still quite grippy, lingering on dried red fruits and tannin with just a hint of cheek-puckering acidity to balance it out. It’s amazing to think that the ‘89 Brunate Riserva still isn’t fully mature.

Outstanding. Cherry, tobacco, black liquorice. Such smooth viscous texture that coats your tongue and allows the flavor to linger after every sip. Also some aroma of dry fruits like prune. Lots of sediment. Cork was in perfect condition. Opened 30min before drinking and left in bottle. Then pours right before serving rare roasted lamb chops.

A hugely deep and wonderfully perfumed nose. Lung filling. Tar, violets more than roses, balsam, and dark nebbiolo fruit and spice. Expansive, yet focused on the palate. It is broad, ripe, and texturally rich, yet displays incredible precision and focus. It is still youthful in this format. Rich on the palate, with sap and density. power and grace. with inner mouth perfume and incredible length. For me this wine embodies what I hope for in nebbiolo. Compelling, archetypal Barolo. A tribute the man who made this wine and to his family. Thanks for sharing TM.

An intoxicating perfume that seems to fill not just the nose but your lungs as well. Cherry fruit, roses, balsamic notes, porcini, cherry Luden's in the best way possible. On the palate, sap and density without heaviness. Harmony, power and grace. To throw in in another overused term, iron fist in a velvet glove. This has beautiful inner mouth perfume, sap and depth. Terrific balance and tension. Towering yet graceful. In spite of al the technical beauty, this is and emotional wine, that just sings to you. Drinking fantastically well, and has a future lifespan to measure in decades. Firm. Wonderful wine.
1989 Piedmont Retrospective (Cinghiale, Baltimore): Explosive complex nose displaying very ripe concentrated black fruit, black cherry, dry cherry, balsamico, licorice, tobacco, root beer, iron, raisin and earth. Incredibly concentrated, layers upon layers of dense concentrated slightly dry black fruit, chewy, bright acidity, strong earthy mineral, still noticeable medium coarse tannins and a long intense black fruit driven finish with tobacco and licorice at the end. Initially almost overripe and rustic with a hint of oxidative note. With air, it shows better detail and precision. The nose constantly evolves overtime, gaining animal, black truffle and surprisingly chocolate. It is a very ripe and powerful wine. The style is quite different from the recent Rinaldi wines. Along with the 89 Riserva Falletto di Serralunga, this is the most powerful and concentrated wine of the evening.

Great nose with spice and pure red fruit. Quite fresh. Clear and precise, yet deep. Took on a darker complexion, with black cherry and light tannic grip, with air time. Needs 10-20 years. My biggest surprise of the night

1989 Produttori del Barbaresco with Chambers Street Wines (Maialino, NYC): (Mystery wine at the end of a lot of wines...) Blood, some brick. Nose immediately breathed bubblegum on me, like a cute waitress on roller-skates, with her clove and vanilla; subtle menthol. Palate is firmly tannic but also soft(ening) and definitely approachable; good, deep cherry, sweet and long; a radar-ping of saline soy. Delicious! Years to go, but certainly good now -- don't hesitate to enjoy this. (My guess was an Aldo Conterno '89; classic but refined and approachable.) Great wine.

Served blind from magnum at a Produttori dinner and stole the show. Best Italian wine I've ever had, by some distance. Translucent maroon. Intense, complex, shapeshifting nose of black cherry/plum fruit so fresh it could have been bottled yesterday; spearmint gum; bitter Amaro liqueur; leather; and flitting, highly unexpected scents of honey and horseradish. (Yes, really.) In the mouth it's merely middleweight yet extraordinarily dense, depositing one layer of flavor after another like waves lapping ashore, with just the right sour touch and a truly remarkable tannic character--the structure binds the taste to the sides of the mouth long after swallowing without drying the tongue in the slightest. In the early stages of what I imagine will be a 20+ year peak drinking plateau. A revelation.
I expected a lot form this and expectations were met and then some.
A soaring nose. Roses, tar, menthol, and with a savory almost porcini side. Truly incredible perfume. Expansive on the palate with a power married to an effortless sense of lightness. This is still youthful with some secondary complexity coming in. Grace and power. Fantastic. What a treat to get to try this great wine again. Classic Barolo, so tarry and with such deep fruit material that it feels pitch-black. The structure has really relaxed here - long decant sure didn't hurt - and feels almost lacy.

The nose showed red fruit, which was a bit stewy, with mushroom, herbs, tar and parchment. On the palate, dried red berries, spice and fall leaves coated the senses, yet the sense that this wine was holding back edged on my thoughts. The finish showed notes of red fruit and old cedar with a drying structure, which cut it short.

Piedmont Dinner (Barbetta): What a treat to drink this side-by-side with the 1990. I don't think I've ever had a vintage comparison of anything that was so enlightening. They were so obviously made of the same stuff and of course similar in age so the contrast turned out to be a dramatic illustration of vintage personality, with the 1990 the softer of the two and this one pretty much having a whole layer of added stuffing that the 1990 didn't have -- more muscular tannin, and a blacker tinge to the fruit complexion owing to the sense of tarriness here being even more evocative and dominant. I don't want to use the "on steroids" cliché but this is definitely like the 1990 in a heavier weight class... without being steroidal. While it offered more in the way of sheer stuffing, though, it also gave every indication that it'll need significantly longer for the structure to resolve itself into a peak-drinking bottle.

Wino Guys Weekend (WGW) #2; 11/7/2008-11/8/2008: Light-medium ruby colour. Aromas of tea, orange rind, damp earth, leather, Christmas spice, dried flowers, alcohol, and anisette. Medium-bodied, plenty of acidity and grip, with orange rind, tea, alcohol, and anisette notes on the palate. Moderate-long finish, with mushroom, orange rind, and tea notes.
Will this wine live long enough to still offer pleasure on the nose and palate by the time the tannins resolve? I'm not sure. What is clear though is that this wine is still a baby even with all the tertiary notes, and it would be a delight to revisit this wine in another 5+ years. NR.
