1.5 hr decant. When I first opened this to decant it the bouquet out of the bottle was so decadent and complicated I thought it would need no decanting at all. However, it does: that first heady blast played a game of hide and seek all evening. Huge black cherry and some very dark chocolate dominate the palate. The scents include blackberry, pipe tobacco smoke, maybe some cedar? For all the bigness the wine is not at all overbearing. I think it is still on the ascent. Tannins are softening but not fully integrated yet. Good acidity; there is nothing flabby here. Score: 95. Relative to expectations: ++

Paid over $200. An excellent wine, this bottle was slightly past its prime. All the good stuff was there. Wife was glad I only bought one bottle, however. The problem with older wines is that you really do not know how they were treated. Based on the few older bottles I have been having, I feel that Bordeaux has been making wine to be drunk earlier. I remember drinking 2005 Bordeaux when they came out and finding them to be great. This is not to degrade the Le Gay, I liked it alot. But, I think I will stay with the 2016/17 bottles. Bought my first 2017 bottles Clinet and Alter Ego a few days ago.
Just starting to become civilized, the wine is powerful, full-bodied, concentrated and loaded with dark, black cherries, ripe, juicy plums, dark cocoa, smoke, licorice, flowers, espresso and wet earth. After 16 years, the wine is starting to deliver the goods in its unique, robust style. That being said, another 3-5 years in the cellar and this promises to be even better.
Double decanted three hours before dinner. Deep garnet with no bricking. Classic but expressive bouquet, with notes of lilly, plum, cherry; hints of black truffle, crushed rock, and bramble. Medium bodied, with impressive concentration, good structure, ripe tannins, and a long and savory finish. Still has significant upside!
Full-bodied, concentrated, robust Pomerol with a nose of roses, espresso, truffle, dark chocolate, smoky plum and black cherries. The wine is rich, deep, powerful and earthy, with a dark cocoa and ripe, black cherry, smoky finish. 90 minutes to 2 hours in the decanter helps the wine. This should be quite long-lived.

Decanted for 2 hours, followed for another 2. Deep ruby. A powerful nose, monolithic at first, but giving way to a more complex bouquet of dark fruits, damson, cedar and spice. A hint of something fatty and unctuous. On the palette, youthful but muscular, fine tannins which still exert real grip. Structure to age another 10+ years without batting an eye. Full body, long+ finish. Excellent stuff!

Even though my tastes have evolved and changed over the years (for the better?), I always gladly come back to the classics. I believe that one cannot enter the wine world seriously without tasting wines from exemplary regions such as Bordeaux, Rhone, Burgundy, Mosel, Piemonte, Tuscany...And not just with the intention to stop at "tasting". One must study these areas in order to understand and fully appreciate the origins before moving onto freaky shit as it comes in forms of Brazilian Pinot Noir or Japanese Muscadelle.
Dark, dark ruby with slight garnet edges. An absolutely magical bouquet of considerable polish with just a hint of aging. You get your blackberry and your plum, but what really stands out here are the heaps of spices and violets dancing together in the wind. If you thought that was romantic, the palate really offers enjoyment. It comes in hard and fast (that's what she said), but mellows out starting mid-game. Ripe tannins, solid acidity and just SO MUCH fruit. Long finish with the oak coming back to the spotlight. Tasted side by side with Petrus and this won single-handedly. Sorry, not sorry.
Starting to soften, but this is still a muscular, full-bodied, powerful Pomerol with layers of ripe, juicy plums, truffle and dark cocoa. Another few years will add more nuance and softness to the wine.

Stubbornly holding on to its youth, the wine is concentrated, full bodied, powerful, masculine and tannic. With 2 hours of air, you find truffle, cherry and floral notes, but perhaps 3-5 years are still needed to add more softness and nuance to the wine.
Fill was into the neck and the cork was sound; decanted about an hour before dinner. Purple ruby core turning to ruby at the rim. Aromas of ripe raspberry, dark chocolate, and plums, with hints of truffle. Medium bodied, good structure and precision, with ripe tannins. Still young; I hope age brings some texture and elegance.

Enjoyed at Bateau. 45 minute decant. Nose: floral, ripe red fruit, wet earth. Solid tannins, full body, and drinking well right now. Definitely will go for 10+ more years, though I prefer it now. Plums, dark cherries, pleasant minerality. Great with our steaks.

Probably should wait a few more years, however, after double decanting for four hours, the rich black purple color leads to a fruit basket with black, blueberries, raspberry, plum and cherry. Vanilla and chocolate, expresso, merge with the cedar and forest floor. All the elements are there for an incredible value wine, but I will wait until 2020 to begin sampling my other nine bottles because I think in this wine the time in bottle will incrementally improve the experience from special to wow.

Double decanted for 3 hrs. A bit of sediment Colour:dark inky purple. Looks thick in the glass Nose: sweet black berries, some bacon fat. Taste:tannins present but not overwhelming. More black berries. Bitter chocolate on back end. Long finish. Quite a powerful wine that seems to be coming around nicely.

At the initial pop n pour this wine looks rather light bodied, but after a long decant it gains weight, darkness, complexity and focus. On the second day it has notes of charcoal, plum, and black fruit. Full bodied, finishes with grippy graphite tannins. Surprisingly, I can't help but say the '04 was more complex and compelling.

Powerful, youthful, fresh, vibrant, tannic and packed with all the plums, cherries, super dark chocolate, black licorice and truffles you can eat. The first top vintage for the new owners needs at least another 5 years of rest to soften and flesh out.
Fairly dark garnet. Nose of resinous pine forest, leather, slow-roasted coffee, eucalyptus, Irish Moos, vanilla bean, freshly cleaned swimming pool. Slightly recessive medium-weight palate of black cherry, blackberry, cranberry, milk chocolate, coffee bean, cedar, orange peel with fairly dense mouth-puckering tannins seeping into the fruit mid-palate. The rather slow start and the lengthy tannin action is a clear sign that this vintage is definitely "not yet" open for business. Revisit in 3 years time hoping for tannin integration and increase in power and substance. As it is, one is not yet really tasting everything this wine could offer, but I am not sure if it will ever be what it should have been. Property should probably consider a different consultant.

This shows a well integrated nose of blackberry, plum, herbs, chocolate and cedar which leads to a pure rich essence of blackberry liqueur that is both concentrated and layered and lasts on the palate. Still young but oh what potential this hints at.

First day after 2 hour decant 89 , second day 94 , really opened up , lost the slight woody taste . If you drink now decant for 3-4 hours at least . If only this was priced at $50.00 .

Oh my God! This is my first time tasting 2005 Le Gay and I cannot believe how good the wine is. It is incredibly thick, rich, pure and luxurious. Liquorious aromas of blackberries, spice, plum, anise and coffee are easily found in the nose. The palate is flooded with waves of decadent, chocolate covered black fruit. Lots of tannins are present in the wine. But the tannins are elegant, fine and polished. 2005 Le Gay is definitely a sexed up bottle of Bordeaux wine and belongs in any Pomerol lovers cellar.

Huge nose of cassis, bell pepper, fresh herbs. Refined palate with some dark fruits, balanced acidity and ripe tannins. Good finish. Right bank wines are not my favorites but this is the type of wine that could change my mind. It really starts to show its stuff after a couple of hours. If you must drink now I suggest a decant. For me, I am considering additional purchase so I needed to give it a try before buying more.

Tasted at the January 22, 2014 10th Anniversary of the TWC of the WS OL Forum. Unfortunately, limited notes.
Nose - initially closed, but opened well in the glass. More approachable nose than the 2005 Montrose tasted alongside it.
Palate - had abit of barnyard, but was otherwise less approachable than the Montrose.
Needs 5 years, atleast.
