This was a joy. Not had any Rav of this age as most have been 5-10 years old. Cork perfect and high fill. On the nose perfect with that coastal element MdT has. Initially a real tangy / sea element appeared on the finish but next time I’ll decant it for 30 mins at least.
Give this an hour or two and it really blossoms. Soft creamy, mineral coastal nose. Some lift in middle with a touch of grip on finish saying Chablis.
After a good amount of air this really came alive and feels so much younger that it is. I’m sure the bottle will last some time but I’ll drink mine at suitable events soon.

definitely showed its age, but it was not in the least bit tired... lots of golden fruit, nutty and honeyed tones, classic wet stone and seabreeze too... on the palate it is rounded, the acidity is moderate and it stays fresh, but it doesn't have the kind of tension and lift I expect from Chablis, not a slouch though, this is a pleasure... probably best to drink it up in the next 3 to 5 though...

At the peak of its window, this is magnificent and would do justice to a grand cru. The nose is aromatic with apple and pear with the latter dominant on the palate. The finish is clean and lengthy and perfectly balanced. A perfect Chablis.

Nick's four wine pairs: The golden colour of the wine hinted at the age. On the bouquet, burnt toffee, smoke, green apples, wet marble, lemons and as touch of Époisses. Chalk on the palate, dry and tactile. Appropriately oxed, just a small hint of maderisation. Beeswax, orange zest, lemons, limes and grape skins with slatey minerality and chalk in the background. Excellent piercing acidity, but still the fruit volume to match. Great length. Two days later, from the fridge, it was steelier, dryer seeming and more mineral, with no hint of falling over. There's easily another 5-10 years here. Grand Cru quality Chablis.

A total contrast to the 2000 drank alongside. An early chalky/cheese note faes away with some air into a very nicely rounded palate. It's still Chablis tones, but the acidity is dialed back and the richness is turned up, giving this wine a character more reminiscent of a Mersault. Yet still the minerality is wel expressed and the palate is sublimely balanced. Clearly the producer knew how to express the vintage well.

HDH auction tasting at Tru (and an embarrassment of riches) (Chicago, IL): A slightly higher toned nose than the '99 tasted alongside. Some pineapple notes. The palate still has a very light touch -- this is very minerally and fresh, but seems a little heavier, with just a touch more oak showing.

HDH Auction Notes (Tru - Chicago, IL): Initially this is just killer. Smokey, salty, and rich with some white peach and mushroom. The palate is firm and unyielding at this point...certainly less approachable compared to the 2000 drank alongside. Gotta love the chalk and mineral cut to this...but could certainly use more time.

Deep lemon color and more lemon on the nose with loads of stoney minerals on the palate and some dry fruits as well, with a very full mouthfeel. Plenty of acidity will keep this going for 10 more years, and it may even get a bit a little better.

Undeniably a classic Chablis nose with a solid, mineral-driven character on the palate. Perhaps it only suffers from comparison to other vintages of great Chablis that show a bit less ripeness and heat. Drinking very well right now but should continue to improve for awhile. No signs of the dreaded p-ox across a few bottles.

Another winner from Raveneau. Incredibly fresh and pure with a core of bright citrus and Meyer lemon fruit that seem to be infused with vivid stony mineral notes. this wine was showing some age, very interestingly for a chablis it was rounded and had a sweet note (almost like a 15 year old PM), interesting combination of minerals, some oxidation, and sweet (!) lemon / lemon curd, still had some good acid so wasn't flabby, very nice and very intriguing... i would drink these up asap if you have 'em

Rich and complex on the nose with very pretty tertiary notes arising at this point, although not at all excessively developed. On the palate an elegant big, full-body white Burgundy that despite the natural minerality carried by any Chablis, has much less of the typical steeliness and edginess of Chablis wines. Great medium+ finish and drinking beautifully now.

Celebrating Bob's birthday (Maude's Liquor Bar, Chicago IL): nose: very aromatic and balanced with mature tones of honey, melons, gun flint, white peaches and a nice dose of pears and minerals. Very good depth and it shows off it's maturity on the nose with some layering as well.
taste: There is a real nice roundness on the palate with a very polished lighter body. There was very good depth along with medium+ acidity and silky tones of gun flint, minerals, pears, honey and white peach tones.

Bob's Birthday Dinner (Maude's Liquor Bar - Chicago, IL): From magnum. This was fantastic. The nose gives you the feeling you're walking along a beach during low tide. Still very pale in color. Aromas--quite reticent and subdued--suggest that this was allowed to age a bit too long. The palate confirms this, though it is bright and lemony. Bountiful acidity and flavor, but there is an aged quality that takes some of the shine off. I'm concluding that this plateaued about four years ago and started a downhill slide perhaps a couple of years back. Some 'Chablis' qualities are missing, while a few 'Chardonnay' characteristics seem to have surfaced. Lesson learned: these don't live forever, at least not in this vintage. An enjoyable wine for certain, but not exciting.

Lemon yellow color. Aromas of honeycomb, tangerine, lemon, and flowers. On the palate, this shows lemon oil, quince, wax, and a hint of licorice. It gets a heavy mineral component and a slight brininess as it opens in the glass. Gunflint notes emerge too. This is at peak for my tastes with maybe a few years of further development before oxidation risk becomes too great for my comfort. Drink.

Caramel color. Really funky nose of cream soda and butterscotch - actually smells madeirized but on the palate it's pretty clean with flavors of caramel and brown spices. Quite ripe and intense with mouthwatering acidity and a creamy/oily texture. Got better and better and developed a lovely fine complexity on the long, mineral-laden finish. This is mature now though and should be drunk. 88
Wow, I revisited this wine after 4 hours and the madeirized smell was gone and the wine was drinking much younger than when I first opened it! Absolutely delicious with wonderful complexity and concentration. Love the distinct mineral flavors of this vineyard and love the authentic way it's put into the bottle by one of the world's best natural winemakers. Upgraded to 92 with life left.

Seashells, salt water/sea spray with a touch of both toast and asparagus on the nose. The palate is steely and has the kind of unique "pure" flavour that I link to Chablis but doesn't really have the depth of a wine destined for greatness. I enjoyed drinking it regardless and perhaps it will prove me wrong in time.

My first foray into Raveneau - or any chablis - for a while. Hard to know what to make of this one. Odd flavors, not spoiled in any way; rocky of course, but no fruit base at all. Not a good match for lemon/thyme roasted chicken, but I'm not sure what to pair this with.

Just after opening the bottle the nose seemed a bit closed and on the palate the wine was a bit dull, which was surprising. We decided to decant it and then the explanation was clear: the colour was deep gold and obviously this bottle had a problem. After one hour of aeration the wine started to show the typical smell of hot metal characteristic of oxidation... too bad.

An enjoyable wine for certain, but not exciting.

over the hill... not necessarily POX but just not good.

Medium yellow color. Honeyed nose with some pear and lots of citrus and minerality. Similar on the palate. High minerality and acidity. Lovely. Thanks to the Glovers for this one.

K says it smells musty which I did not detect. But to me, the acidity was exceptionally high and the fruit was lacking, so flawed in some way.

I wasn't paying careful attention this time but is was abundantly clear this is a very fine example of Chablis, richer and denser than I expected although with less minerality. Good stuff, very fresh, surely more to come.

Classic Chablis loaded with oyster shell and citrus things. Looked quite tight in the company of the other two Raveneau and could do with more cellar time.

A very funky, fairly mature vintage of this wine. Brazen acidity combined with a very strong mineral component that almost overshadows the lovely lemon fruit. Actually improved after an hour of air and became more balanced and tasty.

Very nice rich mineral-driven chablis, drinking probably at the front end of optimal. Not a knock-out by any means, but a chablis for purists. 91-92 pts.

Pale straw... rather stony, austere nose with tart fruit but substantial mineral dust and quince. Medium bodied with good balance in a rather tart style.

After one hour of aeration the wine started to show the typical smell of hot metal characteristic of oxidation... too bad.
