I did not enjoy this when I opened it. Too disjointed, not enough structure, very peculiar compared to the 14 and 16 surrounding vintages which are phenomenal. I then forgot about it in my fridge for 3 days and now it’s really good? What a fantastic surprise. I’ll try the next one in five years.

Pop and pour. Dark and rich, with loads of crystalline blackberry and pomegranate. Dense tannin at first and betrays a touch of heat. Didn't finish this before we left on the 23rd. Had again today and it was done.

Bought from the big Courtier cellar purchase. Note taken on the second half of second glass about 50 min after PnP.
In the glass a clear ruby; edges beginning to brown/brick.
Nose is cherries; tea; dried fruit in the strawberry vein; bit of petrichor; fresh sliced mushrooms; brown sugar; pepper(?); light touch of evergreen needles.
Palate is low tannin; mid acidity; mid light body; alc medium plus; medium finish; low-medium intensity; tiny bit savory but largely follows the nose with primary impression as soft cherry; tea; some earthy character; some lighter fruit character.
This was enjoyable enough that I didn’t open something else but I thought about it (to be clear I am not at all in the no waste camp and semi frequently toss drinkable stuff that just doesn’t land). It may be in an awkward teenaged phase between nervy energetic intense youth and developed complex savory earthy shroomy foresty maturity. This is to say it did not have much by way of tertiary development but simultaneously the fruit and structure are not very vervy. If I had another bottle, which I don’t, I’d probably put this in the “medium long haul” category in the hope it picks up more aged character despite what my memory and the ABV say was a pretty hot vintage.

Wine seems to have grown up some since the 2019 TNs. Cherries present in nose and on palette, acidity balances the sweet flavors. Nice finish. Holding 2nd bottle to 2023-24 to see if the wine further matures.

Nose of dark cherries, cola, and damp moss. Black cherry and cedar followed by a hint of cafe au lait, riding over red fruit acidity. Fine-grained tannins and red cherry on a long finish, with just a hint of earthiness. Was not as exciting as expected.

Nose of cherry and rooibos. Bright red fruit layers with a firm clay element followed by acidity that races into the finish of tight tannins, peppery red fruit, and wet stones. Needs time. 92+ points

PHMG WAG: Newer or Rarer Oregon Pinot Noir (WillLyon Valley): From Mag, this was a glorious bottle! Less funk than many PG wines, sweet black and Rainier cherry with earth, spice and floral notes in the background. Round and soft, but still deep on the palate. 93 on day 2. Now-2022.

Pop and pour and tasted without food. Wow this is funky. Ruby color. Nose is all funk. This is less forest floor and more compost pile. Some cherry and red berry notes. A little brown spice is trying to peak out of the compost pile, but the funky, earthy notes get in the way. Not quite manure, but funky earthy nose and that affects the flavors. One of the dirtiest funky PG wines I have had. Sorry Jim.
So after the bottle being open for 8 days but kept in the refrigerator, I went back to re-taste the wine. I had some trepidation. Alas, most of the funk had passed. The wine showed some sign of oxidation but at least the funk/manure was gone and there was some showing of red berries and some herbal component. To me, this suggests a long decant if opening soon or more time in the bottle. I did increase my "rating" by 2 points.

750ml; PnP; Popped this open at PG tasting @Classic and everyone loved it. Bright cherry fruit, mild funk with mild spice, great intensity, clean with good acidity and mild tannins. Expect this would age well.

Barrel sample at the winery. Captivating bouquet of sweet and tart red berries, flower petals, rooibos and assorted herbal teas, peppery, and stemmy. Great acid, seductively bracing mouthfeel, generous. Time should serve it well.

Jim Anderson / PGC dinner - Etzel Block Vertical and Blind Tasting (New England): Concentrated, but reduced. Great balance on palate with dark fruit and snappy acid. needs time.
