Jim Anderson / PGC dinner - Etzel Block Vertical and Blind Tasting

A lovely dinner with Jim Anderson from Patricia Green Cellars. Highlight was a multi-year vertical of Etzel Block. We also did a blind tasting which was, well, humbling as usual. I won't post my notes from the blind because they are just embarrassing.

  Crimson. Some vitamin notes on nose. Very typical for PGC, though more pepper than others I've had. Animalistic character. Should last.

Vintages that were imperfect in some way - strange weather, etc.

  Blood, tomato, stewed pepper on nose. Moderate concentration. On palate - wow. Rich, mellow. And this is an off year! Damn.

  Medium concentration. Reduced and meaty on nose. Pepper and beef on palate. Still some tannin.

  Not very concentrated. Wildflowers and plums on nose, with a touch of briny smoke. On palate, beautiful balance, and rich. Touch of oxidation, which came out over time.

  Deep red, highly concentrated, but a touch corked. Too bad, as there was clearly red fruit with a plum undertone and good structure.
