At restaurant Aira, Stockholm. Perfect bottle in a what must be really close to a perfect phase. Developed but not fragile. Lots of secondary notes as dark mature fruit, leather, undergrowth and so on. Perfectly weighted acidity, nice tannins. Wotn for me.

Colour looks rather brick/thin, and more aged than just 10 years. Lots of smell jumping out of the glass after 1h in the decanter. Rosehips, mineral and tea on the nose. Balanced palette, with medium long and well integrated tannins. Alcohol is somewhat present/noticeable. Great wine!

À l’ouverture le matin il est déjà délicieux avec cet adroit mélange de puissance aromatique, d’élégance de texture et cette gourmandise assumée.
Neuf heures plus tard, il s’est affiné considérablement et s’est "agourmandi"! (Néologisme, i.e. devenu plus gourmand). 93–94 pts

[This flight included the 2015 and 2016 Tours Cotes du Rhone as well as the 2012 Tours Vacqueyras] Nose was lighter compared the Tours, with more cinnamon and clove spice and black olives. On the palate, also very intense but holding great balance with its higher acid. Showing quite plush, but not over extracted black stone fruits, black bruised plums, slight fig, strawberry jam, brown sugar, a touch of leather and baking spices. Tertiary flavors have started to develop, but it was still drinking rather young. The favorite among the table for this flight, it was a toss up between this and the '15 Cotes du Rhone, but this was showing a smidge better tonight. 94-95

Rayas / Pignan / Fonsalette / Tours Tasting (Scottsdale, Arizona USA): This was the surprise of the night in a big tasting of Rayas/Tours/Fonsalette/Pignan. Not that I didn't expect it to be good, but it was getting unanimous nods of approval around the table. Showing more precision and detail than the 15 & 16 Tours Cote du Rhones, but to be fair it also had more age. I expect this could age for the long term, but given how appealing it is today I am doubtful my remaining bottles will ever see extended age.

Ruby colored with some browning around the edges. Gains body in the glass until eventually settling into a robust profile of raspberry and macerated strawberry with accents of a young tawny port. Moderate tannins keep the finish interesting.

Quite dark crimson, bicking on the edges. Sauvage and wild strawberry scents burst from the glass, followed by a silky and bitter sweet grenache berries infusion, the tannic backbone has melt, this is a wine of grace that does not lack power. Excellent with a matured rib eye.

From memory: Double-decanted for 2-3 hours. Nose with chocolate, strawberries and iron. A big wine that was slow to open and might have needed further cellaring. The last glass had added dimensions, notably iron and tar.

A good wine but was hoping for a little better. There is some of those reynaud notes here but a little too much alcohol and tannin on the palate at the moment. I think this need a few more years.

This is a fenomenal wine! Absoluteley gorgeous with sweet fruit & spices. Long aftertaste and reminds me of Calera Jensen vineyard. Great winemaking also that hides the alcohol beautifully. Think it’s at its best right now but would stay there for a while.

March Rhônes (Chicago, IL): Don't know if something was wrong with this bottle or if it was just Rayas sucking (which honestly is par for the course with Rayas). Possibly it was a refermentation because this was slightly fizzy and drank like an Occhipinti. Light, with a citrus pith note (which of course is also typical for Rayas). Very underwhelming with a laughable market price.

This wine was tasting great out of the bottle as candied red fruits with a generous amount of baking spices. The weight of the alcohol was beautifully carried by the waves of vigorous red fruits.
The vigor of the structure falls apart after a bit of extra air though. The alcohol starts to show and the herbal intricacies start to fall-off. Not sure if we got an advanced bottle, or I had not served this on optimal timing.

Enjoyed this bottle, and more importantly the wife really liked it. She never likes S Rhone. Candied, sweet, berry fruit. Lifted aromatics that got noticeably brighter with time open. Great inner mouth perfume. Not heavy despite the darker cassis/liquor fruit profile and high alcohol which is noticeable. Hard to put down.

2012 Chateau de Tours Vacqueyras. Paired with lamb coconut curry after Boxing Day. Okay this isn’t as fine as Pignan or Rayas but is a damn good approximation at fractional price. First glass was the best with massively concentrated strawberry liqueur, orange spirit, leather and cream. Second glass had less concentration but was smoother; Harvey’s Bristol Cream and trademark Reynaud candied fruit and grassy notes. Third glass peppery notes and more closed. 94 initially more 92 towards the end.

A private lunch (Restaurant 212 **, Amsterdam, NL): A full 15% ABV. Decadent but elegant, borderline overripe fruit, fresh and sweet strawberries and raspberries, immediately recognisable Reynaud style, thyme and black olive, garrigue, silky and creamy strawberry, soft but fresh acidity and firm but finely grained tannins, long and flowing finish. To swoon in.

Blind tasting lunch. Right from the start you know that you are in Rayas land here with its tell tele nose of sweet spices, raspberry notes. The palate is southern but acidity in check. Very drinkable. Served it next to a Burg and it did not overwhelm the flight. One wishes that all Southern Rhone wines were made like this.

Tasted blind. P&Ped. A fruit bomb bursting with raspberry jam, but in a good and refined way rather than over-extracted. High-octane palate with loads of fruit and great balance. Tannins are well built into a seamless structure, managing both the acidity and alcohol. There is nothing to complain about, except maybe limited layers that leave you with a one-dimensional impression.

Nez de fraise écrasé, abricot, réglisse, cuir et enfin la noix après 15 minutes. A l'aveugle certains arômes ferait penser à un beau rivesaltes rouge.

PNP into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Root” day): pale bright ruby with orange tints.
Ripe red cherries and bramble red berries. Lots of fine spices, cinnamon and dried leaves and herbal tea notes.
Superbly mineral on palate with lots of freshness, but also mix of secondary and nicely aged flavours which is quite unique.
94 points easy to my liking. Really very nice wine here.
Second round (6 hours upon opening): superbly mineral and even more saline, grenache herbal notes.
