  • Light red in color. 14% ABV. Riveting nose of red fruits, leather, wet asphalt and flowers. Medium body with impressive acidity. Full of elegance and grace. Cherries, orange rind, tobacco and earth on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. Awesome Barolo from what has proven to be a long lived vintage. Well cellared bottles will drink beautifully for another 2-4 years.

  • Must have been a great wine in its prime. Definitely deep in its decline. Drink now or throw it down the drain!

  • A fully mature wine that is past its prime. I've often heard Barolo from Brunate referred to as a steel fist in a velvet glove. Here the velvet is a bit threadbare and the steel starting to rust. Needed 3 hours to open up revealing nice tannins, but also exhibiting unexpected vegetative notes.

  • Has gotten darker in flavor since the earlier bottles. Nose is tarry, with dusty rose notes. Palate is intense with dark fruit, earthy, a bit of licorice. Acidity has toned down, and tannins are softer than before.

  • Very much like the 2017 bottle we drank. My notes from that bottle are fully applicable, though probably any remaining bottles should be had in the next couple years to stay at the top of the curve!

  • Stood up for months and decanted but still had significant sediment so I had to waste the last 2oz. Light ruby with age-appropriate bricking; aromatic, forest floor, mulch, tobacco, slight earl grey tea, light soy; palate is light bodied, tannins present but well integrated, high acidity, not quite as deep on the palate as on the nose; finish is medium length. Fully mature nebbiolo, showing virtually no fruit of any kind but a decent amount of other depth and complexity for a wine at this age and price point, and the balance is nice. No reason to wait but not over the hill and probably has at least a few years left on this plateau. 90-91
One detraction after drinking this for a bit: I don't really get much Brunate-specific character. It's a lovely non-specific mature Nebbiolo. That certainly holds it back some.
Day 2: No worse for the wear, but also no better.

  • Decanted ~8 hours. Fully mature and just slightly dirty aromas of red cherry, earth, new leather and licorice. Palate has medium concentration with still-fresh fruit that is showing earthy complexity. A good classically styled Barolo.

  • Young, tannic, herby, flowers and tar. B+

  • Lovely rosewater and liquorice notes were there but slightly masked by excess oak treatment on such a subtle textured wine. Was very nice but left us all wondering what could have been

  • Even a little better than my 2013 drinking -- this is classic traditional barolo -- tar and roses on the nose. Earthy, chewy, dark berries on the palate with well-balanced acidity along with still distinct tannins on the back end. Delicious. Still has legs.

  • Bright garnet in color with a ruby hue. Nose of stewed cherries and hints of leather. Tastes of cherries, leather, cigar box, and a hint of kalamata olives. Pure with wonderful acidity. Resolved tannins. Not as complex as expected, but developed positively over two days aeration. Drink or hold for up to 5 years.

  • Given a 4hr decant. Very nice aromatic barolo, with strong meat, leather, and tar notes and high toned dried dark fruit profile. Tannins are quite manageable at this stage. Good acidity without being austere. Enjoyed. Can be drunk now or held. Only moderate depth.

  • Drinking very nicely tonight, dark fruit, balanced, herbals not obtrusive. (From a bottle that had been CVd about a year ago - no noticeable degradation.)

  • See NILO36's note. Couldn't write it better

  • Decanted for about 4 hours; an elegant traditional wine, great overall balance with just the right blend of lighter fruit, acid and tannins, great spot now. Haven't had a better Marcarini.

  • Decanted for ~3 hours and likely needed more time. Aromatics were rather tight with some prune and earth notes lingering. On the palate this was more giving. Elegant and classic style. Red fruit, florals and earth/tar notes. Tannins are soft. There is still plenty of acids. I think this needs 5-6 hours of decanting to show it's stuff.

  • orange color with long legs - taste with mongolian cherries and ripe papaya - cherries with hints of ripe tannins - very long finish - a classic or traditional barolo, needs years but then is a phantom - chapeau

  • This is a quintessential old-style Barolo. It wows with precision and finesse, not loud fruit or oak. Medium-dark with just the faintest hint of age, the bouquet sums up the classic Barolo flavors of autumn leaves, spices, and tar -- especially the latter. The mouthfeel is somewhat austere and angular without being in any way harsh or acrid. The tannins give the wine structure but do not overwhelm the interesting secondary notes that are emerging. The finish is particularly viva and high-toned. Reserve this wine for Barolo devotees -- it will probably turn off neophytes! Just entering it's prime, it should easily last, and possibly I prove, for another decade. I'm glad I have a couple of bottles left!

  • about a 6 hr slow ox with just a half glass removed to increase surface area, decanted just at dinner time. Seems to be in a great spot, this is a very structured wine, acid and tannin, but the flavors are intense. Quite a food wine as the firm structure would not appeal to all. Can hold for quite a bit.

  • Interesting fruit on opening but after an hour decanted it was quite dull - not much life or interest, just a nice nebbiolo balance. Seemed to open a little later on, but very disappointing - and not promising for further keeping. Hopefully a poor bottle.

  • Beautiful and very classic nose of red fruits (cherries, some red berries), some tar, smoke, dried fruits, leather and a hint of mint/eucalyptus and licorice. Hits the palate with red fruits, tar, licorice and a medium acidity, as well as still medium tannins. Very fresh for a Barolo at the age of 15. Medium-full body, very dense without being heavy and a long finish. This is a super classic Barolo in a traditional and elegant style. Also always one of the best values in Barolo. Too bad I only have one bottle left of the 1998.

  • Classic barolo -- what one looks for.... Tar on the nose with floral and rosy notes. Palate is earthy, chewy, dark berries, a definite bit of astringency, and nicely proud tannins that kick in later on.

  • consistent notes - barely moved 3 years on. Lots of bricking but still feels very young. Peppermint, sour cherry, tar, earth. Lush, long with plenty of meat to get stuck into - red berries, mint and touch of aniseed and cloves; turkish delight on finish. Certainly feels like it still has quite a future.

  • Developed ruby, trending toward brick. Great legs. Lovely nose fillled with red fruit aromas. Mostly cherry. Really lovely perfume. Ripe, round cherry fruit on the palate as well. Juicy yet still with the restraint and structure the best Italian reds always seem to possess. Very nicely and delicately balanced between lively fruit and good structure and backbone. Certainly a testament to the ageability of these wines, as it is fresh and lively and lovely at age 14, with no signs of decline whatsoever. Lingers on the palate. A winner, and one of the better Barolos I have had. 4-13-17-8: 92/100.

  • Son in law brought lasagna for Thanksgiving dInner. This wine was a perfect pairing.

  • Will reiterate previous notes, but add that there is some serious bricking going on here which seems odd for a 12 year old Barolo...potential cause for concern re aging much longer? Still, fantastic with tagliatelle with porcini, parmesan, and truffle oil. Sublime. One of a series of flawless courses and flawless wines that evening.

  • This wine is still drinking beautifully once it opens up. Earthy, tar, mushrooms. Well balanced with smooth tannins.

  • Very fine but much too young. Showing some violet and earth elements, but mostly tannic red fruit.

  • Tannins still predominate this wine. Clearly benefited from decanting but still a bit austere. Thoroughly enjoyable but not as well structured as the La Serra bottling.

  • An evening of Barolos ((K)new, Chicago IL): nose: very open nose that is filled with pretty and feminine tones of roses, violets, tar, bits of potting soil, red cherries, and a good helping of fresh picked berries. Very good layering and very attractive that is very seductive

taste: Classy medium feel with tasty medium+ acidity that leads into succulent tones of roses, violets, tar, red cherries, and a lot of fresh picked berries. Excellent depth that is starting to really show itself

overall: A wonderful young barolo. Was more open on both the nose and palate then the 97 and was showing off a real attractive and seductive side to it. Drinking very well right now, but it also very much has the ability to go much further

  • A fascinating, intense, bizarre wine. Decanted for 4 hours prior to serving, and still tight as all get out. Fantastic combination of beautiful light elegance and monster tannins. Mind blowing textbook nose of roses, violets (and about 20 flowers not yet officially catelogued), combined with layers of spice. Palate was extremely subtle yet intense....not an easy thing to pull off, with dried cherries, more violets, and fresh asphalt. Yes, fresh asphalt. Barolo is still a mystery to me, but this was easily the best one I've tried yet, and one that pushed me that much closer to "getting it" re the style of this wine. Ecstatic to have one bottle left, that all present were convinced should not be opened for another ten years.

  • 1998 Barolo and Barbaresco Blindtasting (Slaton's place, San Francisco, California): Medium red violet color with pale meniscus; berry, red fruit, vanilla oak and cinnamon nose; tight, tart berry, cherry and oak palate with firm tannins and a rustic style; medium-plus finish 91+ pts.

  • 90 min decant. Lovely wine - very balanced and in a great place. Hints of mint, plenty of sour cherry, leather and some tar - touch of oak floating around. Plush cherries and berries supported by a lick of licorice, hints of perfume and subtle structure, full-bodied and chewy with gently drying tannins on the finish, well integrated. Pretty much stationary over 4 hours.

  • Has loosened considerably over the past couple of years and is now an ‘old school’ Barolo that is starting to drink well. All meat and muscle at first, dripping with blood and full of iron filings. With air you notice the rose petals that are strewn throughout and sweet chestnut and cedar come to the fore. It finishes with a healthy blast of mineral like acidity and the graphite tannins are firm but unobtrusive. A fabulous match with rabbit paella.

  • nose: sumptuous and balanced nose of mint, tar, purple florals, black tea, and sour cherry tones with bits of perfumes permeating throughout the nose. very pretty nose with beautiful balance

taste: velvety feel with purple florals upfront giving way to tones of sour cherries, tar, mint, and perfumes

overall: a very beautiful barolo. Sweet perfumed tones and a silky and understated attack of tar and purple florals with a sour cherry finish. Very aromatic with good acidity to hold this together for a good while, this is in a good sweet spot right now and will be fun to revisit in 5 years(if I don't drink my other bottle by then)

  • nice color concentrating towards the middle with a bit of lighting towards the edges

nose: great aromatic nose of wood smoke, tar, ash, sour cherry, purple florals, and perfumes. very well balanced and nuanced nose

taste: wonderfully nuance flavors of sour cherry, tar, wood smoke, tar, and herbal spices

overall: a very feminine wine with wonderful aromatics. A great herbal spice attack that transitions consistently across the palate with great wood smoke mid palate flavors and then sour cherry and tar on the back end. Very elegant and filled with class, this is a wine to contemplate and think about while very much enjoying it

  • Perfume and tar on the nose. A palate showing flowers, tar, and red berries. Great acidity and finish - wine is drinking beautifully now with about an hour of decanting.

  • From 375. Not decanted, and should have been. Significant sediment in this bottle. Tasting note written after 2 hours in the glass. Medium ruby with significant bricking. Smoky tar and dark fruit on the nose. Slightly sour cherry with dark plum initially, but the fruit sweetened after a bit. Tannins softening but still there. Decant to air and avoid sediment. If a little longer on the finish this would have picked up another point or two. Still youthful.

  • Nice. Good dark notes. Could use some more time to age or time in decanter.

  • Barolo, shortribs, & more at Phil's (Phil's): Second in the lineup, the Marcarini was very tight, having been opened three hours before but not decanted. Nose began to open over the night, becoming more showy, but it took hours. By the end, we could see some of the power here. Half a bottle remains for trying tonight.
Update from day 2: much more open, now showing loads of tar, woodsmoke, and more perceptible tannin. Looks to be a few years from the optimal window.

  • This was very shy on the nose and appeared very closed. It didn't improve with air. Actually air closed it down even more. However, it is clear that this still has a future ahead since there were strong tannins and vibrant acidity. I would wait until opening another bottle for about 2-3 years.

  • Barolo: Cherry, plum, choc., cooked tart; med. bod, nice t’s, light burnt sensation, dusty flavor, nice long fin.

  • Tasting. Black fruit, lots of spice with dark chocolate, leather and floral background hints. More compact on palate with fruit mostly in background for now. Better after 2006 or 2007.
