Bought many years ago when my tastes were different. Glad I let this age. Turned out quite nicely - toned down a lot with age. Still alive and kicking, and a nice pairing with a thick cut striploin steak! Had this up against its sibling - the '02 Turley Hayne Petite...they were both nice, but the Zin was just a bit better.

Sun dried tomato, soft, tootsie roll, medium bodied, a bit lackluster compared to the 2002 Ueberoth. Fresh red cherry, jam, dusty, spicy spicy, vibrant, but quite hot. Fun wine, great shape. Renee and Jay's Turvical.

Did not bother decanting this at 14 years of age. Had been kept in 55 - 59 degrees cellar since release. This was an extraordinary sensory experience....it was as if the wine was not even liquid---as if my tongue were suddenly immersed in raspberry cream foam!!! Weightless....without tannin, any edges or distractions. Truly a unique wine experience. Followed a '90 Jaboulet La Chapelle and and '98 Grange.....but this was WOTN for its uniqueness! I have had hundreds of Turleys, but nothing this old.

Spicy and zesty. Still tastes fresh and young. Consumed over several weeks with Coravin, and then popped the cork tonight. Tonight, the cork really popped! And it looked cloudy when I looked in there. I am at altitude so I wonder if the Argon gas had some sort of reaction.
At any rate, this is a big, chewy, still incredibly fruity wine that you can drink now or wait a little. Didn't seem to me to be going anywhere. Blackberries and currants and beautiful fruit still.
Killer. Would buy some from anybody that thinks this is on the downhill slide.

Still a beauty. Dense and chewy, dark purple. Fruit has faded a bit, turning this towards more of a claret style, if that can be believed. Deep black fruit: currant, plum, etc. Wonderful considering its age.

Lots of sediment. Deep young ruby with little bricking; nose is high alcohol, pomegranate; palate is full bodied, good remaining red fruit but lots of excess alcohol; unbalanced finish. Unclear whether this is unbalanced because of winemaking or overly aged, but this was hard to enjoy. 83 Update: 30 minutes of air. Alcohol is either more integrated, or I've gotten used to it. Nice peppery spice and pomegranate. Better. 88

Celebrating M's birthday. Any hard edges on this beauty have long since been sanded off. Likely past its prime, but still offers a lot of pleasure. Garnet with some bricking around the edge, with plump tears. The fruit has dropped off, except for some prominent kirsch notes on the palate. Beguiling sandalwood and Asian spice notes that follow through to a satisfying finish. Worth the tariff to enjoy a 13-year-old Cali-Zin that drank so well.

Opened last night. As others have said, this is a beautiful zin with no noticeable heat or hard edges. Decanted for about an hour before enjoying it with a marinated flank steak. Great pairing. On the nose, strong aromas of prune, green pepper, smoke and bilberry with hints of cedar, cinammon, cherry, dark chocolate and leather. Wine was full of fruit and very smooth but it lacked the power to be outstanding. Definitely believe this wine has peaked so probably will drink my last two bottles soon.

From the nose alone, I could almost think it was a port, but upon tasting there was none of the sweetness that comes with the port. Just pure jam. Absolutely no heat whatsoever. Completely delicious. A terrific pairing with caramelized pork belly, garlic, shallots, and rice

Opened for 30 minutes before serving. Inky black in color and very opaque. Smell of dark zin fruit. Must of been huge in its youth but now much more spice in the taste. Chocolate, fig, and dried fruit. With a long complex finish. All enjoyed. Even the server wanted a try and raved about it.

Gracefully aged bottle of wine. Fruit is somewhat restrained, but the spices are integrated wonderfully, and the finish is a mile long. As others note, probably had alcohol driven het when younger, but that has now folded into the wine. Tannins are well resolved.

Popped and poured. I had very high expectations for this given the producer, price and reviews, and they didn't quite come true. It's a fat, hot, oaky, fruit bomb of a California Zinfandel. If you set yourself up for this, it's also pretty tasty in a hedonistic way, but I've been more enjoying the lighter, spicier side of Zin lately. Black fruit, raisins, a weird stemmy greenness in the background. Enough structure to keep it honest. Probably as good as it's going to get, if not a little past the peak. $57 WB

Decanted for 45 minutes and enjoyed over 3 hours. Medium, opaque, slightly cloudy, ruby red hue. Big berry nose of blackberries, ripe red cherries, chocolate and licorice. Well structured midpalate of plum, mixed berries and currrants. Reasonable finish with some acidity and citrus notes. This is a premium Zin that is well built. It packs some heat at 16.1% ALC which you notice after a couple of Riedel goblets. It is currently showing some signs of age (both color and taste) and is probably 2-3 years past it's peak. However, despite it's age it still has more body and complexity than many other Zins that I have tried. Drink now!

Dense, yet bright nose of cut pear, fennel, brambly fruit an a touch of cedar. In the mouth, very refined, complete and long. The wine has a seamless texture without any hard edges. The alcohol is carried off perfectly - although it has heat in it. There are clearly aged nuances to the wine, but overall the first rate quality of the fruit drives the experience. A wonderful nuanced and long finish. With air, the wine opens out but also displays a very tannic backbone. This would have had more fire in its youth, but the experience today was one of great equlibrium.

There are some things that this bottle has proven to me about Zinfandels. Its 8 years old and Zins don't last this long; WRONG! Zins are big and fruity; WRONG AGAIN! This wine was decanted an hour and you would have thought you were tasting a finely aged, Napa Cab. What a beautiful wine. This is what makes Turleys the stars that I still believe they are. Outstanding.

Great bouquet and purity of fruit. Concentrated and deep ruby in color. Did not show any heat. Nice finish. Plenty of life left. I thought I needed to drink this sooner than later but it showed beautifully. Terrific flavors. Fantastic zin. I have avoided the expensive Haynes since 2005 (I have 03's and 04s) but this bottle makes me wonder if I should start up again. Still $75 for a zin is a lot. But I was not concerned with price when drinking this beauty. It was all hedonistic pleasure. I did not decant.

Initially tight with bramble, a little fruit and tannin. Not the blockbuster of previous vintages. After 45 minutes or so the fruit was really starting to come out with some a predominant flavor of juicy raspberries. Alas, the bottle was all but gone at that point.

I can't believe how well it hides the alcohol! Just an amazing wine! Huge red fruit notes along with some floral and spice smells that just keep ahold of you. Awesome wine. Heady bouquet of roasted fruits and some underbrush. A bit of heat on the first couple tastes, but this disappeared for the rest of the bottle. Raspberry, blackberry, gooseberry flavors, with hints of cocoa. I'm sure this one will last for several more years, but why wait?

A most impressive (and for me) unique zin. What sets it apart from other Turleys i've tried is the extraordinary balance and the incredible smooth finish. All Turleys are big - but this wine manages to be huge and elegant. Nose of big jammy black fruits. Fills mouth with dark fruit, smooth tanin, tobacco, garden mint and chocolate. Not as outrageously "in your face" as some of the (still wonderful) other Turley offerings.

Perhaps the best ZIn I have ever drunk. My last bottle, darn it.

As usual I don't have too many words for Turley wines as the alcohol deletes my brain cells <smile>. This was awesome zin. Balanced even though it carried 16.1% alcohol.
