GGs vs. 1er Cru Burgs (Bin 75 Alpharetta, GA): Pale steely yellow green; fairly subdued nose, floral, mineral but a melon and more generous edge to it, a spicy ginger back end with volcanic notes(limestone), lemon, honeysuckle, cooling quality, plainer white fruit with a long driving finish; still young but in a good spot though not very developed yet.

Dinner at Joelia with Robert (Joelia, Hilton Rotterdam): Drunk after the Keller Hubacker 2016 and this wine is less subtle, more direct and ripe fruit driven. Rich nose and palate dominated by ripe citrus, white peach and a bit of honey. Very long finish

GGs with Howard Ripley Wines (Zoom!): From Westhofen in the Rheinhessen, as for Keller, with a number of vineyards in common. Aulerde looks very unprepossessing, a gentle slope in the middle of nowhere in particular, but produces magical wines. It's the warmest in the area, sheltered by Kirchspiel. Clay on limestone, but with some gravel and sand to assist drainage.
Softer on the nose than #2, and stonier. As it warms the nose has some richer, creamier aspects to it. Plenty of mouthwatering citrus, and an overwhelming stoniness to the mid-palate, but the wine has sufficient density not to seem in any way austere - indeed it seems almost sweet upon returning to the glass after drinking some of tonight's other wines. It's quite delicious and the finish is extremely long.

Decanted for 2 hours. Still very young wine with a lot of power. Lovely yellow fruit on the palate. Drunk the rest of the bottle on the next day. Then the wine was totally opened. Far too young to drink right now.

I'm liking Wittmann's wines more and more and although there is the inevitable comparison with some of Keller's wines given the sites, the profile is totally different and on average these wines are more mineral drive and less concentrated and power. This in particular had a lovely stone and chalk grip as well as some grapefruit zest.

[16 17] Tasted after 2017 Westhofener Riesling. A little more restraint on the nose, a bit more depth on the palate. Well balanced, vibrant and precise with good length and mineral intensity to the finish. Very good, but struggling to shine next to the excellent Ortswein (even without looking at the price tag). Hold. 92-93+

Not quite at the same level as Keller’s 2016 Kirchspiel GG at this tasting. Equally well balanced, a bit more generous even in terms of fruit profile, but lacking a bit of depth and finesse in comparison. Still a very good young dry Riesling. 91-92+

Große Gewächse 2016 Tasting (Winery Heilbronn): Very accessible at this early stage with a good amount of ripe yellow stone fruit mixed with some floral components. Very drinkable. The acidity is ripe and on a lower level. 89-91
