Good Rioja, leaning toward a modern style. Blue and red fruits. Good acid. Good balance. Still on an upward trajectory. Day 2 was better than Days 1 and 3. Suggest 2-3 hour decant. This is a wine that I am always thankful for.

After three hour decant wine showed up and surprisingly showed a nice touch of elegance for a Rioja. Tanin and fruit were very well balanced, not a lot of depth but complemented T-Day turkey dinner exceptionally well. Excellent QPR but IMO needs about 5 years to come around. This bottle at 8 was a winner.

Much better on this bottle than the previous (was the previous flawed or is this just huge bottle variation? I didn't see any obvious flaws in the previous...). Dusty, austere, and serious rather than fruity and plush. Ready to drink but can age a bit more. From 375.

Day III. Lovely. Richer, more weight, tannin pop in nicely, the acid washes it all away. balanced. Long life ahead. Giant gobs of mouthwatering, puckering juicy luscious fruit. what pleasure. Drops off violently on the end. The lingering finish is more woody, light fruit, cigar, etc. Love to try the higher end versions of this where the fruit is enough to sustain and push through the tannin and acids and wood. For the price point, great wine , great w food, drink or keep forever.

Not the best year for this wine, but still a very nice wine that hits a lot of notes and works well with food. Maybe the best value-ish wine year-tot-year. Although it is not as good a deal as it used to be, says the OG.

Few bottle of this recently a go to fav from El Gaucho here in HCMC. Good depth of color, likey. Such fantastic notes coming from a deep sniff. Ripe, rich, earthy, barny, some herbs. Love it. upon opening (1 hour air): moderate bouquet of raisins, licorice, blueberry; medium bodied with raisin, black currant influence; finish is short with an acidic bite; after 4 more hours, medium body has mellowed with a longer finish; round and delicious. Drink now.

The 2013 Rioja Reserva is nearly fully opaque medium ruby in color. I decanted this for about an hour and the nose opens to express aromas of black cherry, plum, blackberry, purple and blue florals, leather, charred earth, tar, chocolate, vanilla, and oak. On the palate, I get notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry, black raspberry, cola, tobacco, slate, dried rocky earth, green herbs, and smoky mineral. This wine is medium- to full-bodied with medium (+) acidity, dusty medium tannins, and a long finish. This is an incredible value.
This wine has continued to improve over the past 3 years I have been drinking it. Very typical Muga Reserva with plums, spice, touch of leather and wood; good mid-range and finish. Look forward to drinking these over the next 8-10 years.

375ml. French oak, spice, cloves, dark plums and cherries. Great nose, oak burns off over time. Palate is a subtle, yet solid medium + body with slightly drying tannins. The 375ml bottle took over 3hrs to open up in the decanter and balance out, removing a bitter sweet edge, leaving a dark plump oaky medium + finish. I’ve enjoyed this, need to hunt a few more La Rioja’s down.

I don't drink enough Rioja and enjoying a bottle like this only reinforces the notion. This is filled with pure, Rioja aromatics. Dry, high acid, medium (+) alcohol, high tannin but its all on the tongue (wood tannin)..apparently this is a bit of a marker for Rioja these days as you can't trust that there'll be American Oak apparent.

Based on other reviews here, I’m clearly missing something with this wine, or maybe I was having an off day. But popped and poured, and even after giving it an hour or so, I was not impressed. The nose was promising in some ways and yet muddled, and the palate was also muddy and disappointing, unbalanced, with excessive acidity and bitterness. To be honest, this is something I frequently find with Rioja, and is likely a reflection of my tastes; they’re simply all over the spectrum. Find a few you like — and it’s best to stick with them. This just isn’t one of them for me.
Full body. Dark purple color. Very primary and juicy. Dark fruit, but not a fruit bomb. A touch oaky, yet still more in the traditional Rioja camp. Drinking nicely now, but has at least another 5 years before it gets near its aging plateau. Could easily go 10+ years overall. Nice wine and a very good value.

I agree with one of the earlier comments that this is a good, but not one of the best, Muga Reserva's. It is better than I expected given the ratings for the 2013 Riojas. A bit fruit forward, plums, spices, and a touch of earthiness, this wine should improve for a few years and last for 8-10 years. All that said, I look forward to drinking this wine for a number of years.

Popped and poured. Deep ruby core, pink rim. On the nose; fairly shy with hints of earthy strawberries, cola, dry soil and vanilla – would have guessed a New World Pinot if tasted blind. On the palate; primary dark fruit and a dash of spicy oak, high acidity and firm tannins – tight at first, but opens up nicely after an hour or so. Not exactly old school Rioja this, but good stuff none the less. Could use a few more years though (89-90 points).

Josh Raynolds review of the 12 vintage describes it as. 'A interesting interplay between blend old and new world character" - i very much found that to be true here as well. The nose leans more towards the modern, with some nice placed oak and sweet, dark berries. Very solid on the palate, dark berries repeating, surprisingly tannic, good acidity, a bit of shoe polish on the finish. I think I am more enthused on this wine that other CT's users. Should age but given space limitations, this is typically in my 'on deck circle' for near term fun.

Hadde forventet mere frukt. 87

deep blackberry scents, soft, with some chewy tannins on the end, shows mocha latte, blackberry, plum skins and fresh herbs on the palate, somewhat inviting, not an intense personality, but there is a shyness to this wine, time should allow it to shed the butterflies

Clear medium red. Bright black berry fruit. Mostly a fruit bomb nose but some nice flavors and a bunch of tannins.
Still young.

Winebar [2 Whts & 6 Reds] from 05/12/17 (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): N: Smoke, poss toast, notably atop ripe berries; Intensity lurking
P: Med, poss MF, body; Almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which slowly leads into a LONG, VERY slightly, dustily tannic finish which ULT shows a pleasant swtness. A well balanced style that, I'm guessing, will greatly benefit from cellaring 'til '20, then provide > decent drinking into '24 or so. 90 pts ea winealign.com (2x, 8/’17) & Guía Peñín. [As of mid Apr '20, wine-searcher still shows 3 sources from $26-$30].
Addendum: Also tasted on 9/9/17.

Courtesy of J, leftover from the morning's tasting with Mr. Ordonez. Plummy dark fruit with hints of vanilla and spice. Medium-bodied with flavors of red fruit and vanilla. There's a woody/stemmy thing that a few of us liked and a few of us found distracting.

Nose has crowberries, blackcurrant yoghurt, sweetness, vanilla and lots if spices. Palate has fruit and concentration and plenty of green twiggy tannins. Actually quite good.
