This wine is dark purple in color. Decanted for an hour. Wet stone on the nose. Blackberry across the palate. As it finishes, it’s slate and hints of vanilla. Great acidity and tannins. It’ll be good for another decade. Later in the evening, a bit more character with added layers of herbs and stone.

Deep garnet colour to the edges. Not powerful on the nose. Some dried fruit and earthiness. On the palate, dry, well balanced with solid acidity and smooth tannins. Nuances of dried fruit and cedar. Long finish with vanilla and cedar.
Great paring with beef tenderloin basted with herb butter.

Dark ruby center with pink rim. Black fruits, wood and spices. I tasted it after 3 hours of opening (no decanting). By then, the wine had declined with fruits dissipated and wine becoming thin and sour. It was surprising since 2016 was a robust vintage.

Deep, dark, ruby with purple hints . . . After an hour of decanting it developed into rich brooding plum, blackberry, . . quite a lot of fruit for it’s age. Also lots of developing tertiary flavors. Nice lengthy finish

Decanter Fine Wine Encounter (The Landmark, London): blackcurrant, brambles, cedar, very very slight chocolate and caramel. Juicy, fruit sweet initially then more savoury with persistent tannic tug, all travel long, slight non-intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish. Balanced. Rather charming. difficult to spit.
First bottle from a dozen half bottles bought en primeur. Based on a barrel sample at an en primeur tasting I also got bottles and magnums- the only time I have ever done this. I was impressed then and am happy to say that I'm not disappointed. Sous bois and bramble on the nose at first, then sweet blackcurrant, vanilla and cedar. Still lots of soft to medium weight tannins despite the warm weather. Long flavoursome finish. Drinking now if served a little too warm (I tend to drink younger wines in the summer for just this reason). Ideally leave a couple to four more years for peak drinking, but I will be tracking progress every year from now on. Lovely and great QPR.

Clear deep ruby color. Clean pronounced aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, black plum, vanilla, cedar, charred wood; developing. Dry, medium acidity, medium tannins, high alcohol, full body, palate follows through (lighter and more linear on entry than on nose), medium+ finish. Very good. Can drink now, potential for ageing.

Out of a small bottle. Still at least a couple of years away from drinking window. If you can’t wait to open a bottle, give it a couple of hours air in a decanter. 2016 is a beautiful, classy year and for me better than 2018 and 2019 which have a higher alcohol level.

Rating on the potential I'm detecting, not today's experience. Overly simplistic and ungiving upon opening (not a PNP, for sure). The nose became amazingly floral and delightful after 1.5-2.0 hours of decanting. The palate improved with air but remained fairly lean, noticeably tannic, and with a hollow mid-palate. This is likely to drink well young, but only after few more years. 92-93 pts with time.

Paid $58.95. The wife noted cinnamon and nutmeg in the taste, I called it slightly spicy. The tannins were perfect for me and the ribeyes steaks we were eating. Note I grill the eye differently from the skirt around the eye. I overcook the skirt and under cook the eye. This wine was perfect for the fatty overcooked skirt. I can see having two different Bordeaux wines for this type of cooking. Anyone concur?

Enjoyed this wine over dinner in the car as we begin our takeout date nights at pretty panoramic locations around the Maine coast where we live. Very nice aromas and medium length finish on this wine that went very well with our food. If we can duplicate this experience again getting during the period of social distancing it will be just fine with me.
Healthy Coravin pour, tasted double-blind. The bouquet featured the hallmarks of young Classed Growth Médoc, including noteworthy Cabernet Sauvignon markers (blackcurrant, pepper garden, graphite), oak, and aromatic, deep purple essences, typical of wines crafted with relatively high percentages of Petit Verdot (higher than three percent or so). The bouquet also featured the telltale marker of the (perplexingly over hyped) 2016 vintage, blackberry. The palate promptly confirmed all that the bouquet suggested, particularly regarding the vintage. Though bolder (perhaps more extracted, but more likely the result of six percent Petit Verdot) than others I have tasted, including a Second Growth or two, the wine lacks middle and deep substance. Put differently, this overstated vintage features effusive high tenor elements, but is all but devoid of baritone and bass. Great vintages require all three 'voices', if you will. Also noteworthy, the wine handles similarly to Pauillac, on account of its ruggedness.
All this noted, the wine struck me as one of the best offerings of the vintage, with the Petit Verdot delivering a reasonably good imitation of baritone substance. I guessed, if not Pontet-Canet, the best 2016 I have experienced, then 2016 Fourth Growth or higher, probably Pauillac, perhaps Saint-Julien. With age, this wine, like so many 2016s, will turn lean, on account of its medium plus acid, but will leave the imbiber wanting for range and depth. Drink by 2030. 92-93.
Still young, came out after an hour of decanting. Red fruits, Currant, tobacco and wood, peppery and saline finish; quite silky. Yet tannins and acidity are still agitated. Quite “classical” overall. This need few more years to come together although it is enjoyable now.

Tasted blind in a flight of value 2016 Bordeaux's. Cedar and wood on the nose, herbs, and back fruits. On the palate, medium bodied, tannins and acid dominant, Overall, unyielding and disjointed. Notes of dark fruit, pencil shavings, cassis at odds with heavy tannins and acidity. Very decent but a bit flat and lacking in complexity, 5yrs in the cellar required to see if this comes around and integrates.

Blackcurrants, tobacco, tannin. The first three things that come to mind. Open 4 hours, nice structure, bouquet opens a bit, smooth, no sharp edges. This is like a "take no prisoners" type of wine. Classic. At 5 hours it has a softer feel with black fruit dominating. Reminds me of the 1986. The longer this is open, the more I like it.

Lagrange is not a wine I buy every year, but this is just about the deepest and most stuffed one I can remember. (Wild contrast to the red-fruited and almost sprightly 2015.) On the first day this is a powerhouse with dense black fruit and such intense tannic muscle I needed a fatty steak to really get at it. The next day the structure relaxes and shows rich, glossy blackberry and tangier red currant fruit with a soft whiff of pencil shavings and gravel.

This was one of the most elegant and powerful Lagrange I have tried young. Aristocratic in style, it reminded me of the poyferre, but with less fruit and more power. I think that this will need lots of time and is a bargain that unfortunately needs a decade of a nap...HOLD

At a tasting last month where we compared over 40 2016s. I liked this wine so much from barrel sample a year ago that I bought it in halves, bottles and magnums. Had my fingers crossed before retasting a year on in case that was a big mistake - I needn't have worried. Good nose, sublime balance, loads of soft tannins and fruit, very long finish. Great value.
Tobacco, cedar, red currants and smokey earth notes create the character. Full bodied, fresh, clean and classic, the wine serves up a concentrated, elegant mouth full of deep, dark, red fruits with freshness. Give this at least a decade before popping a cork.

A Truman Capote In Cold Blood kind of red, Zoe Saldana rolling the tobacco leaf, a bowl of dark red fruits with a few perfect stems of crunchy black currants. There is a freshness to the fruit and ripeness to the tannins that make this vintage a celebrity. The wine has crunch and zest and the finish offers a nice bite of tang and temptation. The wine was made from blending 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot.

UGC San Francisco: the 2016 Bordeaux: Stolid and a bit low energy, doesn't hold much engagement. I tried 3 times hoping it would rally, but it never did. Not bad, just meh.

Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux Tasting of the 2016 Vintage (Metreon San Francisco): Good Bordeaux character and balance but very young and needs time. Quite nice.

This was one of the most elegant and powerful Lagrange I have tried young. Aristocratic in style, it reminded me of the poyferre, but with less fruit and more power. I think that this will need lots of time and is a bargain that unfortunately needs a decade of a nap...HOLD

Zachys Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2016 (New York City, NY): Just so young and yet so powerful today. Built with a strong tannic presence. Today it seems elegant but powerful. Was told 67% Cabernet. 28% merlot 5% petit Verdot and 60% new wood.

Barrel sample at an en primeur tasting last month. Definitely a step up for Lagrange. Charming nose, dark colour, sweet fruit, long, balanced. Lovely. I'll try to source halves, bottles and magnums to see how the different bottle sizes progress.
