  • A rich, full bodied modern style Chianti with abundant oak and moderate tannins. Good value and well made if you like this more modern style.

  • Ruby on the rim and opaque plum core. An initial nose of black cherry and graphite, but as the wine opened, black plum, roasted tomato, and mushroom joined in creating a chorus for the senses. The finish is long with mocha. This is a wine that shows best with food. However, the nose is so inviting that a few minutes with it is worth the wait of a taste. Some slight sediment. 11-14% alc. With chicken parmesan. 03.2323. Recommended.

  • PnP’d & enjoyed with Sunday Sauce. Cherries, earth, vanilla & green pepper flavors. Earthy nose. Two bottle left in cellar - DRINK OR HOLD.

  • Third bottle of a 3 bottle lot, brought to friends Barry and Beth’s house for dinner. And I have to admit, after 2 (relatively) subpar bottles, I thought I’d pass the third off on a not especially wine discerning friend, and surprise, surprise, this woke up, or more likely, the last 2 bottles were somehow flawed. No matter, the wood and dill notes were dialed way down, the fruit considerably up, for a beautifully balanced wine which was elegant on its own as well as a compliment with lemon chicken and oven roasted potatoes (thank you, Sopranos). A solid 5 points better than the prior bottles and a pleasure to drink. Aerated for 90 minutes, consumed over another 90 with consistent notes throughout. 92-93+

  • Second of three, and unlike my prior 2 TNs, both bottles like this where I had multiple bottles but which showed variance, one better, one worse, from the prior ones I’d had, this hasn’t moved since my 5/20 note. I’m still getting a lot of dill, wood, earthiness, dried spice and mostly tart red fruit, even with significant air, although the tartness of the wood and dill lessened on the third night. Much better with food, probably 91-92, especially with mixed grill (and particularly the Italian sausage in the MG) than without (maybe a 87). I love BdMs and many of the non-classified sangios, but most chiantis continue to be a tough row to hoe. Don’t know what to say about drinking window here, as it seems at least as likely that the not so vibrant fruit will fade before the structure and secondary notes balance out. Pretty good as a food wine, but I won’t be rushing out to buy more. If scoring, 88-89.

  • popped and poured from a half-bottle. Still surprisingly closed, opening up a bit only after 30 minutes. Great structure comes through, though. Will hold 2-3 years for the next one and give that enough time to breath.

  • I had consumed a couple too early, and this is still young-ish but now approachable and giving. Cherry, top soil, thyme and other fresh garden herbs, cedar and pipe tobacco. Good concentration and balance. And tasty! D/H

  • Deep ruby color. Cherry and herbs on the nose. Palate was intense dark cherry with tobacco and spice. Just a touch of acid to remind that it is chianti. Mouth filling intensity with a long finish. Perfect pairing with homemade meatballs in red sauce.

  • Excellent, Easy drinking, smooth wine. Nice aroma with fruit and flavors of cherry, hint of oak and cedar, some spice and tobacco. Mouth coating smooth tannins and good length.

  • Not as good as I expected. Lots of stuff happening but a kind of "wall" in the beginning of each zip that is univiting.

  • Sweet vanilla minty-tobacco nose on PnP (pizelles?) with delicious silkly cherry-berry, intense but smooth on the palate with a great balance and touch of acid on the finish. Paired with tomato cream shrimp vodka sauce on Etto Radiatori pasta from Paso Robles, it was about as good as it gets, bellisimo!

  • Dense on the eye. Promising nose of dark cherries, even if less outspoken than would be expected from a 2013 Sangiovese. on pop-and-pour, much younger on the palate, suggesting that it is still too early to drink. Next feedback when the glass had an hour of air. but excellent material.

  • Much better than my last bottle merely 4 month ago and best showing of this wine after going through a case over the last three years. This is now showing perfect integration with thyme and other herbs on the nose and bright red and dark fruit on the palate, with nice acidity providing wonderful freshness.
Overall now a very well balance wine but still nothing too deep or complex. An excellent wine with food but also nice to drink on its own. I would even say its better than one or the other Brunello from the same vintage, but then again I have not been particularly impressed by the 2013 Brunello vintage so far.

  • Slow ox for twenty minutes. Ripe red cherries, licorice and some herbal notes come from the glass. This decidedly modern in style, medium bodied, leading with ripe fruit, but lacking the complexity you might hope from this type of bottling. Maybe it needs time.

  • A bit more than a year since my last bottle. Pnp. Transparent garnet. Tart red fruit and still a fair bit of vanilla and oak. This is aromatic and feels very young indeed with all this acidity. But can this develop into a truly good and balanced wine? Seems less ready now than ever before

  • Best bottle to date. Lighter style of Sangiovese with nice cherry fruit. Might now be coming together. Drank well with a baked ziti.

  • This stood tall next to the 2015 Brunello we also had at dinner, probably because the BdM wasn't ready yet, but still. It's ready to drink and has years to go. Very nice with some detectable but balanced oak influence. You could even drink this on its own which you can't say for many Chianti Classicos.

    Iltet i Zalto Burgunder glas.

92% Sangiovese samt Malvasia Nera og Colorino. Høstet fra Fonterutolis 50 bedste parceller.
Høsten gennemgår en nådesløs håndsortering, drue for drue, og vinen er fadlagret på små franske barriques.

  • Excellent wine. More elegant than powerful. Notes of tart red cherries, roses, and tobacco, with some dried prunes and figs starting to emerge. This still tastes young, though it's certainly read to drink now.

  • A pleasant nose with cherry fruit, a tiny bit of leather, herbs and dried tomatos. Actually this felt like sticking your nose deep into a Caprese salad with the basil and all. Decanted approx 6h but that was still not enough to tame the beast mode tannin. Also super high acidity. We had this along with home-made Bolognese amd even so the wife said after one glass she can‘t have any more (and popped a pill for the stomach). I guess if you‘re used to Chiantis this might be ok, but I’ve had much more harmonious and velvety Sangiovese. By the way, kept this another 24h in the decanter and the palate still didn’t integrate. This was quite surprising as back in 2018 this appeared more ready than today.... I did really appreciated the precision and aroma profile, however. I will cellar the rest of my bottles for 4-5 years (at the very least) before opening another one.

  • Notes consistent with previous bottle, though finish seemed a bit more polished with this one

1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2)

  • Deep ruby in color with a med intensity complex and incensed nose showing both red and black fruit, earthy undertones and maybe even a little game. The palate was all red fruit with med tannins that were silky and well integrated.
I wanted to love it but the lack of fruit concentration and the medium finish made this wine just good. Although the acid is present, I think this is a drink now wine.
{edit} Acclaim aside, my note is my note. Whilst the acidity would definitely support ageing (I had it as high), the wine lacks the concentration and balance (high alc) to lay it down...IMO. Bottom line, nice wine for $40 but disappointing as a GS.

  • Should you be interested, I’ve uploaded info for this vintage which you can peruse at your leisure. 😉

≈110 min decant into a plastic, cylindrical pitcher which was then capped; NO visible sediment; Private Preserve used after Day 1.

N: Slightly closed; Earth, blk cherries, & toast with wafts of blk pepper which seem to increase over time

P: LM body; NICE, almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which stays in contact with the init frt as it seamlessly evolves into a LONG finish with a TANGY/swtness (65:35) to the FEW, marginally firming, very, VERY fine tannins. (For me it's MOSTLY the acidity providing the structure.) At least currently, on the austere rather than voluptuous side of the spectrum, I'D drink this food wine now & into '24. However, as the relatives weren't pleased, I'll likely hold our remaining bottles into at least early '22 in hopes that the acidity (the apparent "problem") at least somewhat loosens its grip. For me this did just fine with the night's Stuffed Pizza/Marinara (Chicago Style).
// Day 2: Both N & P very ~ Day 1's, & have held QUITE nicely, a (to me) balanced acidity once again being its calling card. For me personally this is a straight EXC (92, 93/100 using that metric), but I'll "officially" go EXC-/EXC because of the relatives not being fans, I suspect because of the acidity related "firmness". Also, should easily hold through '24. 13.7% ABV; [As of late Sept '20, wine-searcher still shows 2 sources @ $60 & $72].

    Note: Also tasted on 3/17, 7/21, & 11/3/18, + 1/26/19.

  • Pretty classic rendition of chianti. Perfect with some heavy rich pasta that went with it. Notes of balsamic, spices, red cherries, sour notes. If you want a balanced chianti to put next to some classic italian food this would be a good bottle to go for. Didn't seem like there would be much benefit or positive evolution to holding it longer.

  • First of 3 ($32.99) from the online wine clearinghouse. Very subdued on the nose and palate with muted notes of cedar, earth, smoke and tart cran-cherry, but it was mostly about teeth-rattling tannins and acidity. 1 oz pour, then let sit without decanting for 90+ minutes, but TNs didn't change much. Dark purple, light bodied, light legs. No heat, light complexity and persistence, light to moderate intensity. I confess to some skepticism about chianti, viewing it as the unloved relation of the object of my affections, BdMs, having grown up in the E Coast in the '70s, when every third tier Italian restaurant had a bottle of straw-encased chianti on your table which could be yours for about $10; when my parents slipped me a bit of these, my thought was that they were more suitable for taking paint off a car than drinking. As I've become more mindful with my wine drinking, I've found some very good, reasonably priced chiantis like Volpaia, Marchesa Antinori and Felsina, and more recently, a couple which are actually very good wines, full stop, Sorbo and Badia Pasignano. This is a long way of saying that, along with good CT and pro reviews, my hopes were higher for this wine than what was delivered. The wine softened marginally over time, but I can't recommend it to anyone as a standalone drinker--I'd put it in the mid 80s scorewise. It's significantly better with food, excelling as a complement to spaghetti and meatballs, but it still hardly seems to be the same wine I'm reading about (where on God's green earth people are finding vibrant berries and cherries is completely beyond me). Not clear to me whether this will improve since the fruit seems so muted, but I'll hold my other 2 bottles for 18 months+ and hope for the best, and if I'm wrong, there's always pasta and pizza . . .

  • From memory. Oak, cherries some soil on nose. Same on palate plus some minerality. Med-/low tannins. No heat at all. Oak not yet integrated as per my preference. When that happens this will be a smashing bottle. A hold for me. Potential 90/91.

  • Solid Chianti with typical profile of bright cherries, raspberries, minerals and hint of tobacco. Lots of tannins and acidity, which made a nice food-friendly wine and paired well with Turkey and accompanying sides. Medium+ finish. Detected a fair amount of brett which blew off after couple of hours.

  • Pretty classic Chianti with ripe raspberry, tomato puree, just a hint of barnyard and green provencal herbs. Very fresh acidty, a tad bitter, decent length finish. Already slightly better than my last encounter. Let‘s see how this develops.

  • Pnp and drank over 45 min. I frankly don't understand some of those rather high scores here. I very rarely drink Chianti but have a fair bit of experience with Brunello and some of the other well established Tuscan Sangiovese (eg. Flaccianello, Fontalloro, Pergole Torte, Percarlo, Cepparello, Testamatta etc).
In my eyes, and consistent with my last bottle a year ago, this is a fairly simple food wine with good freshness and bright fruit but nothing with much depth or complexity.
I also don't see how further aging will benefit this wine, as both the wide open palate / fruit and the well integrated tannins are saying drink now. Anyway, others obviously see something here which I do not.

  • Decanted for 2 hours ... should have decanted for twice as long. The color is a deep ruby. The nose is sweet, black cherry and balsamic vinegar; absolutely divine. The palate reflects a rich and lively body that has years ahead of it. The mouthfeel is bigger than the Il Poggione, but not by much, and even then, that length is a surprise. I would have pegged the Brunello ahead of the Gran Selezione on simple head to head bet, but tasting them side by side, the nod goes to the Mazzei wine. This is a real delight to drink. Some slight sediment. Alcohol is reported at “11-14%”; rather quaint in this day. With antipasta of mole, prosciutto, toscano, finocchiona, gorgonzola dolce, parmesan romano, ossau iraty, alp blossom, peccorino, olives, artichokes) and grilled bistecca (beef porterhouse 3“ thick from Flannery Steaks). With the Kane and the Rosburgs as part of our Italy Revisited meal. Recommended with maybe a slight nod toward Highly Recommended.

  • Clearly young, needs some time. Light in color, for a Chianti. Lots of fruit and spice on the nose. Primary, dominant fruit on the palate, almost Pinot-like cherries, but plenty of underlying structure. Big palate. Long finish. Hold for at least a year or two, and this could get quite a bit better.

  • Dark reddish garnet in color. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of red cherries, strawberries & plums with overtones of floral notes of roses & earthy/dusty, dried herbs, spices, minerals & a hint of cedar in the background. Medium bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, rich, ripe red fruit flavors of sour cherries, mulberries & cranberries with dried herbs, spices, earthy, minerals & a hint of toasted oak. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing but will continue development with additional aging.

Recently released again at SB, highly alleviated with older vintages.

Rich and dense nose with blackberry, cherries, cedar and hints of vanilla. Smoky notes, cream and nougat develops with time in glass.

Served cool, fresh vibrant acidity, some green notes, slightly warm fruit, cool midpalate, lingonberry finish. Smooth tannins.

  • Pnp after two Burgundies. First bottle from a case of 6. Am scratching my head about the 94 points from Monica Larner. This is a nice, middle of the road Sangiovese, fairly approachable already and well balanced but is nowhere near the aromatic complexity and beauty of the better 2013 Brunellos. • Looks young, ruby red edge and translucent core.
Nose - ripe, red fruit flirting with dark. But a nice floral component emerges. Would guess more Piedmonte than Chianti.
Palate - full and rich. Nice acidity counteracts all of the fruit experiences on the nose.
Overall - very clean wine. Not that exciting if you’re looking for a wine that speaks only to place. Pleasurable to drink and the finish is wonderful. Just a tad modern for Chianti Classico.

  • 2017 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/16/2017-10/25/2017 (New York City, NY): This medium ruby wine is comprised of 92% Sangiovese, with the remainder split between Malvasia Nera and Colorino. Offering bright raspberry and cherry fruit with a supporting cast of baking spices, tobacco and loamy earth, it is medium-bodied, freshly acidic and has nicely integrated alcohol (listed as 13.5%). While deceivingly approachable from the attack through the solid middle palate, it flashes some gritty tannins on the lengthy finish. Give this one some time. Drink 2019-2030.
