2015 Passopisciaro Passorosso

  • Frenchies at Young Joni: Medium red color. Slow-O for 45 minutes. Drank a glass over an hour. Same bottle as Bellissimo. This was the lone red wine tonight. Cherry, leafy earth, a touch of strawberry, medium bodied or just less than that; green herbs, dusty firm tannins. This is always well done.

  • Brought to a dinner, sat with cork open 45 minutes before we got around to this. No note taken, going from memory.

This replaced an off 2013 I had also brought. Semi-translucent red, cherry, black cherry, smoke, dusty road on the nose. On the palate I got more dark raspberry fruit, herbs, and an earthy core. Decent acids up front with pleasant tannins on the finish. This is still an overall tannic wine but have settled into a more complete package and aren't in your face.

All-in-all this is in a nice drinking window. Enjoy with food!

  • This is my first Nerello Mascalese. The aroma is something I never came across before, this unique earthy herbaceous spice notes, not the same as Pinot noir’s earthiness and herbaceousness but equally aromatic. More red fruits like dried strawberries than black fruits. Cedar, smoky, savoury, horse saddle like a southern rhone wine. Colour is medium ruby. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium plus acid, medium alcohol, medium plus tannin (the colour is so deceiving!). Medium plus intensity, a lot of tertiary notes like dried cherries, hay, mineral. Medium plus finish. Medium plus body.
The wine is very good. Balanced, good intensity, complexity and finished. Drink now, don’t think should age further. Should pair well with oily fishes, poultry, pork, roasted veggies.

  • No detailed notes unfortunately. It had a beautiful, red fruited, earthy nose. Red fruit, some black fruit, earth, a bit of mineral with a twist/brightness thing to it. My buddy who tasted it was drawn between a pinot and "some funky Italian thing." tannins were silky and great acidity. A solid tasty wine.

  • Gave this 3hr slow ox at home & removed the cork again upon arrival at Chianti Grill Roseville. Served 90 minutes later w/ temp in the low-mid 60s. Tonight's bottle was sublime! Semi translucent red. Silky but weightlessly energetic with mineral infused red & black raspberry along with herbs & underbrush notes. Really fun to drink this alongside two single vyd Contradas that I've never had before. The slightly darker, ruby colored Contradas ramp up the concentration & intensity along w/a bit more body & structure. I was impressed with both mine & the Contradas.

  • This 2015 Passorosso (L 01/17) needs a lot of air. It did not open up until two hours after decanting, and was a remarkably better wine at that point, so please give this air ! It has a great structure and great acidity, so it seems to have many more years ahead - until 2030 ? - if properly stored. In terms of its ideal drinking window, this wine represents one of the very few times that the great Ian d’Agata got it wrong, because his view in 2017 was to drink it in 2017 - 2022. It is a medium bodied wine, slightly austere, with a lovely 13.5% ABV and ethereal aromatic hints of red fruits, bitter orange and rosemary / mint / basil. It is lip smacking, with an austere beetroot finish. Much different than the very big 2014. Strangely, this was less interesting on night two. Good QPR.

  • Pnp on my own. 14°C. Light hue with brown boarders. Sweat and sour with vegetal back : sweat raspberries, tulip bud, underforest bush, few acidity, polished tannins. Ending on vegetal bitterness. That is a new experience for me. A pure wine that evolve nicely without default, but i'm douting if I like it, the structure is a bit special for me. Perhaps my fast after a long journey...

  • Wonderful wine, forgot to take notes. Final bottle from 2019, drank for Valentine's Day with homemade pizza

  • A mouthwatering red, vibrant herbal notes, round and inviting, flavors of wild berries, red fruits, citrus peel, showing touches of smoke and sea water salinity.

  • Pale garnet; a touch under medium bodied, fruits in the red spectrum spiked with minerals (the lava) with a slight tanginess. The fruit was slightly flabby and lacked precision/definition. For me, glad that I don't have any more bottles of this 2015 to go through.

  • Red with some brown starting to show. Lovely structure and freshness. Mouthwatering. Gourmand. Light chalky tannins that are well integrated. A mouthwatering light lemon freshness with a savoury backnote of pith. Really good seam of minerality. Almost saline.

  • We took to daughter Ana & family's place tonight & served outside w/ takeout pizza on her deck with the gas heater humming on a calm low 50s MN spring night. Glorious night, with the supplemental heat:). I mention this as context for the wine notes. I had a difficult time paying much attention to it with my 2 young grandboys "grandpa, this & that" at every turn :). They're way more important to me, than wine. So here are my sketchy thoughts.

I've generally loved my first 2 btls. Tonight's, felt leaner & more standoffish, even with food. Leaned more to the savory side of things. I was begging for a little more fruit all night. Everyone else was happy to drink it and it was gone by the end of dinner. Hum? Ill try another this year under more scientific conditions:). Great to be emerging from 14 months of exile! 89pt wine / 98pt night!

  • Quite a bright, transparent garnet here; fresh bouquet of cherries and raspberries on the nose; very bright fruit on the palate, sour cherries, some green flavors here as well; fine tannins, lovely light to medium bodied style, but only average length. Not a lot of complexity or depth, I expected more minerality as well considering its origin. Very food-friendly. 15.5/20

  • Same as my note of 10 December

  • Reminds me a lot of Pinot noir crossed with Nebbiolo
    Pale-coloured
Aromas of earth, crushed black granite, black tea, black cherry, menthol, eucalyptus, and liquorice
Minimal if any detectable oak flavours
    Pronounced but smooth tannins
Sweet black fruits on the palate
    Excellent length and high acids
This wine has the structure and stuffing to age for another decade at least

  • Soft. Smooth smokey and mineral. Red fruits - strawberry and sharp cherry. This is in a really good place. Nice tannin structure and grip. Fine grained tannins as the palate moves though. Lovely freshness and acidity - lemon pith / acidity. Lovely floral note - violet?? Colour is light red actually showing some colour development. Very long.

  • Lovely smell. Plum, blackberry, some red fruit too. Bright floral smells, clean. Translucent red, ever so slight softening of the colour at the rim. This wine performs the magic trick of being concentrated and rich in flavour whilst remaining medium bodied and fresh. In the mouth there’s plenty of bright fruit followed by juicy acid. Not hugely tannic. A long clean finish. Excellent.

  • After drinking through a beloved half case of the 2014 vintage at home, we found a 2015 on the wine list of a restaurant in Telluride. I adore this wine. It's so soft, like fine graphite that blows away with the slightest breath. Some other light, soft, beautiful reds (e.g., Beaujolais) have more bright fruit flavors. This does not. Its light fruit is dried in flavor, not fresh. But I love it. 2014 was even better. Agree with others who say it needs to open for at least 30 minutes to strut its stuff.

  • Double-decanted, and served the following evening; non-blind. Has yet to hit its preferred plateau; medium-bodied, developing complexity/depth. Elegant, with a med+ finish. Offers a good+ sense of place/grape. Should be on point in 3-5 more years. Lovely. HOLD. highly recommended

  • Auzone Passopisciaro (MK) #1:

    1. Ljust röd, transparent, viss orangeton i kanten.

N1: Lätt näsa med tranbör, röda vinbär, lingon, lätt chokladton i bakgrunden, godiston (90) Somrig, beska i slutet

P1: stram, hög syra, ung, lätt och elegant, lite kantig, ingen fyllighet, sval (90)

Ö: syra kick, mineralisk, rent, frächt, lättare än övriga, snipig, inte det tätaste, enklare, läcker renhet

    90+p

  • After a 4 hour decant. Wonderful smell, plum, orange peel, tar. Medium bodied but a deep rich concentrated fruit taste. Very fine but persistent tannins. Super wine, has many years to improve.

  • Three small glasses from coravin: added two more because this for me unknown wine is very delicious, very pale in colour, reminds me of a burgundy, nose of some red cassis and raspberry, the fruit fresh and savoury not as I believed before rich and juicy, italian pizza herbs, finesse all the way, for me a very positive surprise, will improve but I would not assume this is made for the long haul, pop and enjoy, great showing, ***-(****), 91(+) potential

  • Pale ruby. Some purple floral aromas, grass, twigs, some meats, a red bricky sense. Floral rosy, sour cherry flavours, with grass, twigs and some savoury smoked meats. The florals persisted a bit at the back, quite a good length

  • Airy and lithe. Cherry and herbs (think oregano). Supremely balanced. The ideal red to drink during the warmer months.

  • Bellissimo's btl tonight along side mine at the annual picnic. I still slightly prefer this less fleshy, less rich, 2015 over my 2014 tonight. The 2014 is definitely more a crowd pleaser with its added richness and fruit. This is more of a think piece that many will find short on fruit. I love both vintages tonight and happy to still own at least 3 each of both the 14 and the 15.

  • Brought to a large gathering, served along side a 2014. The 14 was a little more chilled where the 15 was a room temp. Both offered transparency that we've come to enjoy from this producer, red cherry, raspberry, hints of pepper and very floral. The 14 had significant more tannins than the 15 but both were drinking nicely.

  • What a pretty wine. Elegant (think Chambolle) cherry fruit, bright acidity, spices, and minerality. The finish was not as persistent as I remember the '14 being in its youth, but nonetheless a lovely showing.

  • Not decanted, two pours consumed over ~2 hours (with another wine poured in between). Lovely, red berry/currant fruit notes and undertones of tea/dried herbs/dust, fresh acidity, definitely good now but still coming together a little bit, I think. Air did this wine good in terms of settling some of the acidity, so I'd recommend a decant and/or giving this another year or more of age. I'll probably try to forget about my other bottles for a while.

  • Absolute household favorite. Absolutely transparent in everything it shows from its color to bouquet to its palate, it is not trying to hide anything. Cherry and red raspberry, volcanic minerality, hints of baking spices and pepper. Just so nice.

  • Not much to add that wasn't said already: a charming lighter red with depth in reserve that will continue to improve for several years (even though its function in my cellar is to defend the single crus).

  • Exploring french whites with seafood in Oleron island: Blind tasting. Very light hue, like a pinot in cool year. Perhaps with orange borders. Nice flavours of smoke, brown tea, and ripe cherries. Mouth elegant fine, juicy and quite long after taste. Very elegant. Mistook for a high quality burgundy. Superb. 100% Nerello Mascalese, a blend across different altitudes and soil types of Etna. Malolactic fermentation 18 months in large oak barrels. Coup de coeur".

  • Terrific as always excepting 2014, and even that vintage, should eventually right itself. I've written about 20 notes praising this wine. Lets just say its one my "go to" fav reds. And, I bought this batch super right for $27. Crazy bargain! I've drank two now and have six more of this vintage. I rarely buy more than 3 of anything, ever.

  • Such purity here. Fresh redcurrant and cherry, driven along by volcanic minerality. Very fine tannins. A wine with integrity.

  • Transparent, clean and pure. This reminds me of a nice burg that has nothing to hide. Cherry and red raspberry over some baking spices with a mineral core and a slight pepper finish. No idea how these age as these are so enjoyable in their youth.

  • Yea, back to the Passopisciaro I fell in love with but likely will misspell for ever! Gone is the fat, over the top, 2014 style anomaly. We should have been wary when the critics gave the 2014 crazy high scores. Anyway, enough 2014 bashing. PnP in Burg glasses about 3 hours before dinner and slox ox. First sips promising. Nose started out with a bit of reduction but cleaned up and opened up with time. Translucent bright red color. The nose greets you with red fruit, spice and floral rose and mineral notes. The palate offers up delicate tart cheery and red raspberry along with more spice, mineral and herb notes. Took a little while for the mid palate to fill in and this should improve with a couple more years or so in btl. Elegant, weightless and energetic mouthfeel. Love it! Welcome back old friend! ALC, a reasonable, 13.5%. Sure my cellar is dominated by red burgundy but isn't fun to mix things up with a "Burgundian" wine from the slopes of Mt Etna!

  • A nice whiff of volcanic characteristic on the nose, with its gentle sulphur, as well as some good red fruits both on the nose and palate. Surprisingly acidic and tannic, this doesn't have the flesh that I would expect from the riper year or the hotter region. Still, this is quite a pleasant and enjoyable wine.

  • A classic vintage of Passo and a nice return from the overripe '14: very pure and exciting flavors. Everything en pointe.

  • Clear light red. Very bright. Medium intense spice, cherry, raspberry, pepper and scorched earth nose. Delicious berry and pepper flavours and a great long balanced finish. Not at all hot.

More what I expect from this wine. Not the alcoholic monster the 2014 was.

  • Wow! Well balance between acidity and freshness; cedar, mushroom, bright red cherries! Simply delicious! Make sure to let it breath if you are going to drink early.

  • Wine Watch Ft. Lauderdale - Passopisciaro Tasting. - This old world style wine is produced from 100 % Nerello Mascalese, using grapes that are grown from the producer's different "Contrada". This means that grapes are blended from several of their vineyards (which includes different altitudes of Mt. Etna, different soil/lava types, and different micro climates). This wine has a pale ruby red color and a nose of roses, and red fruit. It tastes of cherries, raspberries, garden herbs, earth, and minerality. Nice acidity, plenty of fruit, fine tannins, all integrate well with its generous alcohol content. Moderate finish.

  • Bright red, closed even after decanting, this took about 40 minutes to open up fully. Very aromatic, with sweet flowers and exotic spices; red cherry, cranberry, more exotic spices, some savory notes; structured, precise, delineated, almost lip-smacking acidity and almost mouth-puckering tannin, but the "almosts" mean that it is in fact a delight to drink now, even if it is the brand-new release. Long, dry mineral finish. The main reasons to wait on this is, if previous vintages are a guide, it will develop more aromatic complexity and especially some hints of savory sweetness.

  • The nose was incredibly pretty with mineral-laced cherry, savory spices, crushed stone minerality, and dried flowers. On the palate, I found zesty textures with red berry fruits, literally exciting the palate with a mix of fruit, acid and minerals which made the mouth water. It finished with gorgeous red inner floral and spice tones. This is simply a pleasure to drink and so pretty to spend time with as you watch it evolve in the glass.
