Decanted for 4h; a little tannic and astringent at first, but after a few hours of air it opened up into a beautiful bouquet, with plenty of fruit but also starting to show some secondary notes of leather and tabacco. Much better than expected!

Dried red cherry, Stone, rosemary and thyme. tannins are a bit of a roller coaster ride not in a bad way. Paired with a ribeye. Thinking that it would have been better with a veal dish or even hearty pasta.

Dark red cherry with field flowers and a hint of vanilla. Earthy simple finish with mushroom, dried basil and earth notes. Dry tannin lingers on the finish. Drink now.

This is an excellent blend of fruit from the communes of Novello (Ravera), La Morra, Serralunga d'Alba and Grinzane Cavour. Decanted. Pale garnet. Complex, med+ ripe black cherry, aromatic (bitter) herbs, tea, roses, licorice, pencil shavings and subtle sweet baking spices. Very elegant oak treatment, with 30 mos. in large oak casks and some French oak barrique. Dry, with med+ to high acidity, med+ to pronounced tannins and high but unobtrusive alcohol (14.5%). Full body yet lively, with med+ flavor intensity and finish. Very classically-styled, very balanced, very elegant, age-worthy.

A: Pale garnet N: Pronounced intensity. Rose, red cherry, liquorice, tar, leather, P: Dry, high acid, high grippy tannins, full body, medium (+) intensity and long finish C: Balance between the acid on one hand and the fruit concentration and tannin on the other. Good length and intensity but young and lacking in complexity. Very good quality wine. Structure makes this super for ageing with high acid and tannin to keep the wine fresh whilst the florals and red fruit convert to tertiary complexity, $60

Pio Cesare wine dinner. Mid ruby. Already approachable but still young. Obvious tannins but not too drying. Medium body. A cool vintage. Doesn’t have the full ripeness or concentration of warmer vintages but nevertheless a nice, classic barolo.

Pio Cesare Barolo 2014, cooler vintage. Some rose petals on the nose. On the palate, cranberries, red fruit, juicy, somewhat elegant but a tad young. 90/100 You can tell it’s from a cooler climate as it was rather lean compared to the others.
From a Pio Cesare Vertical tasting.

Tasted at James Suckling Wine Central, Hong Kong 2014 Pio Cesare Barolo was clear medium ruby with an orange rim. It had good typicity of Barolo with aromas of rose, sour red cherries and tar in smoky undertones. It was dry, medium-bodied with high level of tannin and acidity, and had long finish of ceder and sour cherry flavours. (91)

Winebar [1 Rosé, 3 Whts, & 8 Reds] from 07/05/19 + 5 Shared Bottles (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): From "family-owned vyds in Serralunga d’Alba (Ornato, Collaretto, & Lirano), Grinzane Cavour (Gustava & Carzello), La Morra (Roncaglie), and Novello (Ravera);" Typically, vinified "in s/s; skin contact & maceration for about 25-30 days; Aged in oak 'botti' for about 30 mos, a small amount in FR oak." 5,800 cases made, 2,600 cases imported.
N: Vanilla atop cherries with definite floral notes (roses, poss violets?) & undertones of tar?
P: Med body; Very RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOSTS swtish frt fairly quickly met by astringent pucker which DOES stay within hailing distance of the frt as it morphs into a LONG finish with hints of swtness to the dusty tannins. A potentially elegant style, but NEEDS through '22 min. My EXC-/EXC; 94 pts Suckling, 93 WA, 91 WS, and 90 ea WE @ $68 & Wine & Spirits. Clean, pale and ruby colour. On the nose it is a medium intensity with grape, pomegranate, bubble gum, chocolate, cinnamon, clove and pepper. The palate shows a dry, high acid, high tanning wine with a full body and medium + finish. The nose is complemented by Jasmin, cedar, tart plum and nutmeg. It is a beautifully complex and balance wine. Outstanding.

Bu en succ dans le backstore avec l'ami Éric. En carafe depuis le matin selon lui. Un peu sweet et assez alccoleux (c'est pas une blague!), on a pas apprécié...jeune, oui, il devrait être un peu mieux avec de la cave.

Strong iron notes on the nose, along with red cherry, leather and lots of varied spice qualities. Between medium and full bodied (14% ABV) with red cherry upfront and darker red fruit along with plum notes through the middle. Very good depth and density through the mid-body into the back. Tart cherry and floral notes on back along with very good blend of tannins and acidity. Finishes with minerals, floral/tar and spices. Good complexity and depth even at this young stage and should develop quite well over the next 5+ years. (Il Goccetto; Rome, Italy)

The nose was intense with spiced crushed cherry, cedar, dried roses, leather and hints of moist dark soil. On the palate, I found soft textures contrasted by tart cherry, minerals and spice with zippy acidity. The finish was long and angular with saturating sour cherry, smoky minerals and a coating of fine tannin. Pio Cesare has truly managed to create a very balanced Barolo in the difficult 2014 vintage.

Clear pale ruby; clean faint nose of cherries and cedar; pfn with addition of tar; medium body; high tannins; medium plus finish; medium plus acidity; dry; beautiful but simple wine at this stage of its youth; if it ages as well as the 2000 then buy a 6 pack and drink it over the next 20 years
