At this point, this is drinking nicely. Very smooth and rounded. On the jammy side, which I like. Subtle dark fruit on the sweet side, but with underlying spice like pepper.

Popped around 3pm, poured a sample and slow ox until around 7pm. Much better at pop. The wine is ok upon opening but unfortunately as it oxidizes it becomes flat and one dimensional with that one dimension being prune. The wine strikes me as overripe with very little structure If you have any, I suggest you pop and pour and enjoy over a few hours.

Inkyness is trying to hide the acidity and dark fruits play with tannins nicely - PnP. I think I might love Paso Robles, but with Austin Hope being my peak so far and j. Lohr being my floor this falls right in between rating wise. There's so much I like about Austin Hope. There is so much I like about j lohr especially for its price. Very typical, moderately priced California Cab. Suggested drinking window ends in 2026 though I think this is drinking reasonably well now and tannin / acid structure suggests this won't make it another 6 years. Big, bold oaky nose of black cherry, cassis, smoked meat, semi-sweet chocolate, rosemary and worn belt leather. On the palate this wine is full-bodied, with surprisingly soft tannins, high, burning alcohol and medium+ acidity. Flavours of ripe black cherry dominate with notes of blackberry, plum and smoked meat. Meaty, smoky finish with a hint of sweet black cherry.

Paired very nicely with grilled NY Strip and lamb chops (same meal). Interestingly, flavors were very different depending on the meat, with much more rosemary and mineral notes coming through with the lamb and typical darker cab flavors with the steak. Solid all the way around.

Day 1, a little unimpressive, I could not quite put my finger on it, however as i tasted on day 2 it really found itself. The nose showed jammy black fruit and cedar, with a subtle spice. It's alright. It may be a decent QPR and that's probably why people are rating it a bit higher than I think it should be. At this price point I think Juggernaut and Mettler are better.

Tasted in Philly restaurant for $58, lots of fruit but good acid/tannin to balance, a bit jammy, tends to be a critics darling but crowd is ambivalent, drank with duck, might drink again as it tends to be a good value on overpriced wine lists.

Dark fruit and spices, maybe even a bit of fruitcake on the nose. full-bodied with brambly cassis in its fairly ripe fruit. Somewhat plummy with sweet fruit. I'd swear there's some young, ripe P.S. in here Reasonably well-balanced at 14.5% alc.

Fruit forward almost jammy Cab. Cherry and red berries, ripe but not over the top. Some spice and a lot of acidity keep it together. Not everyone's type of Cab, but it's good for what it is, especially for $21.

Nice wine. Sweet oak and New World intensity inject a dynamic element into plump black cherry, creme de cassis, plum, and wintergreen notes. Firm tannin drives the tasty finish.

A friend brought this over. I was curious to see if it had changed from the last time I had it (see tasting note) Well, it has not. It is consistently bad. It was like pouring syrup on a perfectly cooked steak. Couldn't have more than a sip. Maybe a chocolate cake or a cigar would be better pairing. I'd abstain.

NYEve with Steve & Lucie (At our place, then Knickerbocker): PnP, at restaurant, with T-bone steak. Very red fruited (some darker fruit and some spice) with some drying tannins, but with balancing acidity. Developed as we drank it. Needs a couple of years in the cellar to come together. May be best from '21 to '24. Potential to gain 2-3 points.

Day 1: Clove and vanilla ice cream nose eventually paring down to cherry sauce. Medium body with chocolate, oak, and creme de cassis on the palate. Hot spicy oak finish that is astringent, bordering on unpleasant.
I enjoy hedonistic cabs and love the Paso style of Austin Hope but this relies on a big frame which is lacking in this wine. Many good factors are in play here but I'm afraid they never manage to work cohesively.
Day 2: Heat and oak have receded, (very) sweet vanilla nose remains. Definitely more coherent on the second day- I had originally decanted for an hour but at this point this probably needs 3+ or a few years to be sorted out as a PnP (which may be understandable intention at this price point).

Hummmm.....tasted at the winery and hummmm. Tasted many different reds and oddly, they all have the same medicinal residual taste. Same yeast used in all of their wines? This was confirmed by another taster. Was like a light bulb that went off as to what the odd taste was with all of the Daou wines.

This opaque ruby wine is loaded with ripe black currant fruit that is laced with dark chocolate, licorice, allspice and pipe tobacco. Full-bodied and freshly acidic, it frames its fruit with plentiful grippy tannins and a substantial amount of spicy oak. The alcohol (listed as 14.5%) is well-woven with the wine's other structural elements. Plump on the mid-palate and closing with a medium-length, smoky finish, this is a hedonistic Cab that will recruit many fans over the next decade. I would favor giving it a year or two in the cellar before popping the cork. Drink 2021-2030.

Have read reviews and written a few myself that mentions licorice but I always assumed it was just a hint. On night one, after a double decant, this bottle had an overwhelming taste of sweet black licorice along with deep black cherry and maybe ripe plum. The licorice was gone by night two. I would rate this 92/90/89 over the three nights so that makes me wonder if it needs to be decanted. Not sure where the licorice taste comes from--maybe sulfur? Anyone have a thought? Young for a Cab so am wondering if this will improve with age. Tannins still there on the finish.

I was in a hurry and wasn’t thinking clearly, else I wouldn’t have opened a 2017 so early! But wow, there is so much in here yet to unfold that I think it will be marvelous several years from now. Very concentrated—big and bold. Cheers.
Sweet nose of cassis and fragrant woodspice. Fruit forward, jammy, almost too sweet and juicy with soft tannins, hints of dark chocolate in the finish. Would be good at a party or event, for people who like sweet reds. Edit: was much better after a 2 hr decant

Open at least 1 hr before, aereate. Medium aromas of black fruits, dried leaves, tar and camphor. Off-dry, medium acidity, medium(-) tannin, high alcohol and medium(+) body. Palate full of ripe blackberries, vanilla, sweet spice, licorice, and grilled steak/leather. Significant residual alcohol heat, even after 1 hr. Smooth, slightly overconcentrated, and a bit bland. Medium length and rather sweet finish falling off quickly. Great to accompany a barbecue party.

Brief tasting during a walk around of California Wineries, Montreal.
Really enjoyed this entry level Paso Robles, less fruit-driven and jammy than it's Napa counterpart, more savoury yet still remaining fresh, with a lingering finish that makes you want more.

Comes on way too strong. This wine is all show and no substance. It explodes on the palate with heavy alcohol notes and the the finish just drops off to nothing. At least it has some tannins to help but they can't overcome the heavy candy/alcohol notes on the initial palate.

Cocktailish & port-like. This tastes more like crème de cassis than wine. Nose is sweet, palate is sweet, finish is short. Overextracted, overripe & unbalanced. Reminds me of a McMansion. Pretentious using extract and over-ripeness to invoke a sense of richness but clumsily executed leading to a mass-production impression. At the price point, I'll look elsewhere for options with more serious craftsmanship.
P: Med, poss LM, body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish frt (approaching threshold R.S.?) met by an astringent pucker which pretty much mitigates my the LONG, balanced, very, VERY slightly spicy finish with a tangy/swtness to the pretty much innocuous, dusty tannins. My 4th consecutive vintage, this is, as usual, nicely done in a style typical for this producer's "entry level" C.S. Approachable now, it DESERVES through '19, then drinking through '22, poss '23. 14.5% ABV; My VG+/EXC-. 90-92 pts WA, 91 Vinous (Raynolds), & 90 Jeb Dunnuck. [This vendor's $19.99 puts it in the TOP 20% of wine-searcher's LARGE posting.]

This is mostly definitely not a pop and pour bottle right now. Give it a strong 2+ hr decant to smooth itself out. My bottle was consumed over two days and was best at the 24 hr mark. Color is a deep purple. I found baked berries, plums, mocha and baking spice aromas. There's plenty of concentrated fresh blackberries before those firm, oakey tannins take hold. As noted, smoothed out those tannins reveal some good complexity - dark chocolate, black tea, olive, spice, caramel and tobacco. If you like the style, it's a good deal on a Cali Cab right at the $20 mark.
At Daou tasting dinner. Surprising nose and palate for a Cali cab, this was not very well received by the table, and I have to agree. A bit bitter and unbalanced, this wine may improve with more bottle age, but was a little disappointing for now.

Seymour Wine Club Meeting 2/9/19 (Home of the Alapatt's): Tasted blind. Stark contrast from wine #3. Big nose of plum, cherry, blackberry and touch of earth. Flavors of plum, vanilla, cherry and blackberry. Ends with a cherry and plum finish of 20-25 seconds. I guess the Intrinsic Cab from Washington but I was wrong. This is definitely more jammy than the 2015, which has a bit more structure. A big wine for sure. I gave this 91 points and it finished 4th on the night.
Spicy with acid and tannins to balance, nice bouquet, a bit hollow in taste, consistent taste throughout the bottle, not complex but tasty, drank with chicken wings and ribs, stayed interesting until the end, might drink again, not your Napa cab, pure flavor.

Good value on the wine list at Jack Fry’s in Louisville. $48 and paired well with lamb chops. Fruit forward, but of dark plum and black olive. Good QPR.

Really enjoyed this entry level Paso Robles, less fruit-driven and jammy than it's Napa counterpart, more savoury yet still remaining fresh, with a lingering finish that makes you want more.

I tend to agree with the previous note...
