Oh, I am sorry that this is the last of a case, but every bottle has been stellar. No rating, as per Cappellano's wishes (read the back label; what a statement!) but this is easily the best Barolo I've ever experienced. The tannins have melted, and the wine itself is melt-in-your-mouth scrumptious. So, so good. Could go for a couple more years, maybe many more, but I chose not to wait, and I am 100% happy with that decision!
Much better than the 04 version and totally singing, though certainly on the early side of its peak drinking window. The baritone tar notes really come out in the Cappellano wines, even though they are still red fruited and floral. Lovely contrast.

Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VIII (Chicago, IL): Surpassed the 2004 by a long shot today, but overshadowed by the Franco. Nevertheless, a brilliant execution by Cappellano -- I loved the delicate red fruit and floral accents, with some lovely acidity to balance the fruit here. There's still plenty of potential here, so it's not like this has to be drunk up anytime soon.

Again no rating, as per Cappellano's wishes, so I'll simply state that this continues to be the best Barolo I've had the pleasure to drink, and this is drinking perfectly. I have only one bottle remaining of a case purchased thirteen years ago at <$US 55 (!), and every bottle has been great. I'll miss having them in my cellar!
Opened 4 hours prior to tasting. This is another brilliant bottle of mature Barolo. It's totally singing and probably won't get any better than this, I'm not saving my bottles.

No rating because Cappellano asks that we not, but this 2001 bottling is consistently the best Barolo I've ever had. (The 1999s, also usually stellar, have been less consistent.) Opened for three hours, decanted for three more. Classic juice that I feel very lucky to have scored at such a low price (okay, a full case at $54.91 per bottle) many years ago. The originator of the saying, "Barolo is the king of wines, and the wine of kings" may have had Cappellano's offering in mind.

Open at noon, decanted at 3, served with the main course at 6:30. Respecting that Cappellano has asked that his wines not be rated, I will say that I can't imagine Baroli any more wonderful than this bottle. With some focus, one can perhaps pick out wafts of tar and roses, hints of sour cherry, but that hardly merits the effort, as this is nothing more or less than a singular—to borrow a term from the previous TN—expression of Nebbiolo in one of its most elegant iterations. An extraordinary wine.
Paired with grilled prime sirloin, sautéed mushrooms, and bourbon-maple steamed carrots.

Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VII (Chicago, IL): I sort of can't believe I've never had this vintage before -- I guess by the time I had discovered these wines around the 2008 release, they were already starting to get a little tricky to find, and backfilling was getting harder and harder. One of my favourites tonight, without a doubt. I love the tart red fruit, with sour cherry, coupled with relatively high acids, and still a good amount of tannin. In a dinner with so many 2001s opened, this showed very similar characteristics to many of the other wines in that way. A sensational, two thumbs up kind of wine. I think many of the table agreed with that.

2001 Barolo and Barbaresco (Chez Wolff): [Double-decanted for 2.5 hours around 6am.] Massive nose of black fruit and tar. Loads of ripe fruit, but quite tannic on the finish. This is a beast of a wine. Hard to believe that this is 20 years old. Or that it is the "lesser" of their two Barolos. 96-98

Popped, breathed in bottle 5 hours, decanted 90 minutes, served from decanter over the next two hours. Fabulous aromatics and the show continues on the palate. Excellent balance, terrific amplitude, yet magically weightless, continually opened to reveal more complexity and a revolving sensation of nuance, propelling into a lingering, lip-smacking finish. Give this lots of air. Tannin seems pretty resolved, but still feels like it has the stuff to develop further in bottle and there is more to come from further cellaring.

A stunning archetypal nose. Balsam, roses, tar. Massively forward, yet beautifully focused without any loose edges. On the palate, it has tremendous sap and inner perfume, with a richness coupled with a sense of grace. It is not delicate, but rather effortlessly forceful. There is a clarity to this wine that one really sees outside of a couple producers. Great florals, spice, and terrific underlying acidity, with an expansive mouthfeel. A wine to make you swoon. This has much of the character of the Pie Franco, just painted with a slightly rougher stroke. Stellar. Incredible wine drinking youthfully well.

Singing with a few hours in the decanter. Full throttle ultra-classic nose of fresh cherry and plum, licorice, dried florals and new leather. Silky and pure cherry fruit that is laced with spice, florals and herb. Grippy structure in the mid palate and finish reminds you that this 20 year old has a way to go. Lingering flavor-packed finish. Traditional Barolo at its best.

Drinking very well now, my best Cappellano bottle in a while, maybe the best Rupestris after 1990. It's such a beautiful balanced mature barolo. It's all there, textbook Nebbiolo.

Slightly oxidized (?) with the wine feeling much older than a 2001. That said, the wine was beautifully layered with dark cherry fruit leather, savory notes, balsamic and a pleasant glossy texture. 92+ in its current state, but I suspect this was a bad bottle.

2015 Burlotto and others (67 Pall Mall): At the beginning of its plateau of maturity, this was a beautiful bottle tonight. A lovely deep nose that reminded me of Bordeaux, with additional liquorice, spices and exotic soap. High toned and hedonistic, and so smooth and weightless, this disappeared way too quickly.

Drinking well now but improves during the evening, so my conclusion on this one would be maturing rather than mature, however approachable now. The nose and palate shows typical mature Barolo elements. Good balance, but it is the structure of the wine that would get me to save some for 8-10 more years just to see what it will be. That said, 2-3 hours in a wide decanter now this is up for fun, no doubt.
A good example of why a big portion of my cellar belong to Barolo.

An outstanding Barolo wine that continued to get even better with each sip. Aeration really helped this to fan out as well as add some depth; the tannins were very fine and just a touch sweet, adding to the overall pleasure and sapid length. This began at very good and got better from there, which is to say I'd love to see this again in 10 or more years, but it's a real treat right now, too. Better with 90 minutes in decanter. Drink or Hold. highly recommended

A wonderful example of muscular Serralunga Barolo. Dense aromatics with loads of dark black cherry, tarry notes and spice. Palate is concentrated and structured yet never heavy -- the definition of poise and balance. Still quite young, but not punishingly so, as the dense fruit and tannin offset one another. There is plenty of savory pleasure and depth to be had in this young Barolo, but it's best days are yet to come.

Cappellano Vertical (Lusardi’s Restaurant, NYC): [Double-decanted at 12:30pm.] Muted black fruit nose. Tight and tannic. Very backward and hard to judge at this point. Doesn't seem to have quite the richness of the best 2001 Barolos. 93-??

The nose displayed airy and lifted red fruit with notes of dusty spice, menthol and licorice wrapped firmly around a mineral core. On the palate, it displayed radiant cherry and pomegranate with hints of spice and firm ’01 tannins, which provided a saturating and concentrated fruit sensation along with grip to spare. The finish resonated on fine tannin and lingering dried cherry and sweet herbs.
A savory nose that seems very complex. Maybe the most complex of the night? And a rather restrained but seamless palate. Integrated. Tightly woven and firm but really rather stunning.

Slow o'd for four hours; could have decanted but didn't this time. Slightly occluded, browning red; amber to clearing meniscus. An outstanding Barolo, with notes of mushroom, tar and roses overlaying the black and red fruit. Soft tannins and well integrated components.

Decanted for an hour. Deep scarlet to rusty orange-red at the edges; translucent. Nose of roses and tar. An extraordinary Barolo. Medium-light body, long finish. Violets, cherries, roses, and various other notes too subtle for me to identify. Two of us shared a bottle (the ladies, Marsannay) with a dinner of roast Cornish hen Tuscan style, and we practically licked our glasses: this is really a down-to-the-last-drop kind or wine. This Barolo has just entered its drinking window and would seem to have a long life ahead of it.

I decanted the wine for 2 hours and drank with roasted meat - A relatively reserved nose, shows with time and notes of nail polish, raspberries, spices and licorice stand out. The palate is a kaleidoscope of leather, anise, clove, rose or violette petals, while the finish is the real thing: apparently never ending, it's astringent tannins deploy persistent black cherry and unripe peaches. Really beautiful, a wine a can only aspire drinking again and can recommend for a special occasion!

Great wine. Ruby color lighter on the edges. Nail polish, tobacco, liquorice, tar, cherry and roses = Classic barolo-nose. Medium body with an astringent long finish. Plenty of acid and tannin give promise of a long life. Cappellano just confirms again and again that he's in my personal top 5 in Piemonte.

Outstanding! A very pure and classic expression of nebbiolo; loads of roses, cherries in the nose. In the mouth it displays good acidity, dense fruit, wonderful grippy tannins and an extremely long and powerful finish. I drank it over two days and it was more open and much better on day two. This is clearly a bottle with a long life ahead (had it not been drunk tonight). I wish I had more.

Dark ruby red. Zesty nose of tar, very spicy, dark berr. Transparent fruit, lively, fresh, great depth without weight, chunky tannins that carry through the finish. I like this a lot ... just classic Barolo.

I wish I had more.

ei heller i Italia.
nesten litt uregjerelig (anarkistisk?). Trenger luft.

Dark ruby red. Zesty nose of tar, very spicy, dark berr. Transparent fruit, lively, fresh, great depth without weight, chunky tannins that carry through the finish. I like this a lot ... just classic Barolo.
