  • Piemonte Non-reds & Catena Malbec Horizontal: Cherry, red licorice, blackcurrant leaf. Medium- body on the palate. Lots of red fruit - raspberry, red cherry, earth. High tannin and acid.

  • During a Barolo/Piedmont tasting lunch, not blind. Darker than other wines. Primary with dark fruit, tannins still quite present but not drying. Apparently from a local grape called Ruchè. Medium- complexity.

  • Pretty deep ruby color with some purple. Aromatic and with the typical Rinaldi purity. It‘s showing dark with notes of black cherries, some blue fruit too, some animalic notes/leather, there is also some licorice and floral notes adding complexity. It‘s medium-full bodied, with medium-high acidity and medium+ tannin that is surprisingly present. Good length. A lovely Ruchè from this fantastic producer. I love how in all their wines, the character of the grapes/vineyards is coming through but they also all have an undeniable house-style.

  • Gamay and Famille Paquet (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. Very ripe and chewy with a distinct sweet blackberry note that had me thinking of Schramm's meads for a minute. Brutally tannic on the palate, while it was somewhat clear to me that this tasted like an Italian grape, my mind was just between dolcetto and barbera.

  • 100% Ruchè. Fermented spontaneously, bottled unfined and unfiltered. 13,5% alcohol. Tasted in a Rinaldi Rosae 2019-2011 vertical.

    Very deep and dark, almost fully opaque blackish-red color - the wine looks darker than the other vintages tasted in the tasting. The nose feels very ripe, sweet-toned and quite concentrated with brooding aromas of juicy plums and black cherries, some licorice, a little bit of savory wood spice, light funky notes of old leather and a hint of phenolic character. At first the nose feels somewhat closed, but it does open up nicely with some air. The wine feels dense, quite concentrated and rather full-bodied on the palate with bold yet slightly restrained flavors of licorice and black cherries, some funky notes of leather and phenolic spice, a little bit of tar, light sweet notes of ripe black raspberries and a hint of earth. The overall feel is quite firm and muscular for a Rosae with the rather high acidity and moderately grippy medium-plus tannins. The long finish is quite powerful, somewhat grippy and slightly warm with rather intense flavors of juicy black cherries, some meaty umami, a little bit of savory wood spice, a hint of astringent bitterness typical of Ruchè and a vague bretty touch of farmhouse funk.

    A surprisingly bold, concentrated and muscular vintage of Ruchè that surprisingly doesn't suffer that much from the atypically hot and dry 2017 vintage - something I haven't seen that much in 2017 Barolos and Barbarescos - but instead shows more power, concentration and tannic structure than the other vintages of Rosae we tasted. The flavor spectrum here has shifted from the typical, bright, red-toned fruit flavors to the ripe, darker-toned end, yet the wine doesn't come across as particularly sweet or showing too much ripeness. However, this came across as somewhat closed and definitely not as open for business as the surrounding vintages, so I guess this wine really would benefit from additional cellaring. Although I prefer the lighter and more playful style of Rosae, this was an impressive wine in its own right.

  • Rosy aromas, hints of sandalwood and nutmeg, dense black cherry fruit. Finely woven texture, serious stuffing, and a bitter-chocolate finish. Drinks better now than in February '19 and should improve with further ageing.

  • Bu un peu jeune, mais il y avait de grands amateurs de ruchè, alors je n'ai pas résisté. C'est toujours aussi bon, mais les tanins accrochent encore un peu, sera meilleur dans un ou deux ans.

  • Roses & violets on the nose. But this version is more geared towards blueberries, nutmeg and liquorice - as well as denser and inkier - than the more raspberry-fruity and loose-fit '16. Best kept for a year or two.
