I opened this 1.5L Mag with some best friends last night. It took about an hour to come around and then it was smooth sailing though the larger format bottle. Definitely mature, don’t hold them any longer, but a fun treat indeed.

So, this did have some storage issues for short periods of time. And at first I attributed my sub par experience to this. However, an hour after opening, I'm wondering if this is the case. The wine is 15%, and I'm starting to think that the normal evolution of this wine is probably what I am tasting. IE: super rich, full bodied wine on its decline, with slight hints of dead leaves. Monolithic, kind of boring, and tiring on the palate...

Still deep purple/red on the eye with no visible signs of age. Red fruit with maybe a touch of herbs de Provence on the nose. Red fruit and smooth tannins on the palate. Consistent with my previous comments; it sings with red meat, with uncomplicated flavors and tannins that balance the meal.
Fourth in a four-bottle Isosceles vertical. Cellared since purchase from Justin eight years ago. Stewed, cooked, whatever; though not corked. Still, this was undrinkable.

Tasted as part of a six year vertical 2001 to 2006 with a group of 12 for dinner. We sought the advice of the wine maker from Justin on the rotation for dinner. He suggested 2002 and 2003 for appetizers (sushi, chicken skewers, artichoke dip), 2004 for salad, the 2005 and 2006 for dinner (beef burgundy, green beans, brown rice medley), follow up with the 2001 for dessert with cheesecake and chocolate.
Here's how we ranked the wines. The clear winners and rankings were the 2006, 2002, 2004, 2001, 2003 and 2005. Each of the wines was opened for 3 1/2 hours prior to dinner. The 2004 was rich deep and balanced and a pick me up coming off of the 2003. There's plenty of time left on the 2004 wine. These are incredible wines, very consistent year to year. Justin should be proud of his accomplishments in these wines.

I do not drink much CA cab, I found this to be a very nice bottle. Tasted very nice, had complexity to it (for a young wine) and evolved over 3 hours in many subtle but enjoyable ways. Seemed to have plenty of life left in it as well.

Clear dark inky purple in colour. Clean nose of black currant and blackberry. Dry, med aciditiy, med tannin, full body, black currant, licorice, and vanilla on palate. Nice long finish. Should have decanted longer. Upon opening the alcohol was very dominant.

Nose: Surprising notes of candied ginger, anise and peppery spices.
Taste: Great acidity and berry tartness up front; peppermint, licorice and bittersweet chocolate in the very long finish. Considerable tannins throughout but not overwhelming.
All in all, a lot of life left in this wine -- could even sit a few more years. A real treat.

Beautiful to enjoy now, well-balanced, layers of fruit, fruit liqueur, oak, mint, over a core minerality. Medium-long, easy finish with no rough edges. Surprised me how enjoyable this was. 92-94

Decanted 3 hours. Beautiful nose of sweets baking and a strawberry field. Very rounded, balanced body. Seems soft at first but there is oak, acid, alcohol, and some stiff tannins after a second or so. Full, concentrated flavors of chambord, mint, chocolate, and resin. After a couple more hours hickory, roasted almonds, and some tart berry flavors emerge. Aftertaste coats the mouth with nutmeg and a hint of wet cardboard. Twenty seconds or so. An incredible, complete experience. Hard for a Cali meritage to get much better.

Like a good Bordeaux blend, this wine sings with meat. This was Justin at their best. Rich red fruitiness sings from a solid stage of minerality. A wonderful wine to share with wine newbies who aren't quite ready for the more abstract barnyardy/exotic flavors that can characterize higher end bordeaux.

Slow-O 2 hours, served blind, at cellar temperature. Still a dark ruby color with virtually no sign of age. As this was not my bottle, I have no idea of the provenance, but this came across as ripe and ready to go; I didn't see a tremendous amount of structure here to suggest cellaring. If I had some of these, I'd be opening them and enjoying what freshness remains over the next 5 years. Full-bodied, unmistakably Cali, with vivid aromatics and juicy, layered red and black fruits. This is not my style of wine - I prefer more elegance in place of the open-knit, loosely structured style. Perhaps it was bottle variation, I'd be willing to give it a go one more time. Score B/B+

What a great wine. Dense crimson. Powerful scents of black plum and red raspberry with smoke and toasted oak. Creamy flavors of black cherry. Firm, yet velvety tannins in the lingering close. Very lush and fruity, yet well balanced with supporting acidity and tannin.

Silky smooth and absolutely delicious. Dark fruits, plum, blackberry and perfectly balanced, this wine just blew me away. Wish I had another 12 bottles of this. Have no idea how this drank a few years ago, but it is just perfect right now. Hints of milk chocolate only further makes this wine terrific.

Very nice full bodied cabernet blend. Deacanted for an hour. Better than I expected given others' notes, with fruit forward black cherry, cassis, cranberry, and vanilla, balanced with moderate tannins and acids. Still tastes very young, but enjoyable now.

From magnum. Black color. Big smoky nose that dominates the black fruit. Lush entry of blackberry & black currant with a lot of tannin on the finish. Needs time to evolve, this is still quite young. There should be enough fruit to out live the tannin.

Finally, back to a more consistent split. Mature cherry with a chewy earthiness. Round, sweet tannins. One of the better splits I have had recently. Not sure if the inconsistency comes from the wine or size of bottle. Drinking well now if this bottle is the correct sample.

Lots of cherry on the nose and also some candied fruit. I decanted this for about two hours. Tastes of ripe, ripe fruit. This is a fruit bomb. The palate is so big and complex that it overpowered my dinner. I guess that I needed a more flavorful cut of beef. There are lots of tannins still at work. Maybe this still needs some time. I didn't enjoy it.

Shared with the Grumm's as a early birthday gift to Gunther. Color and body is good with a soft mouth feel. Flavors were NOT there at first, the wine needed time to open up. Give this 30 to 45 minutes to breath before consuming. Flavors were suttle, nothing complex.

Currant fruit on a medium to full body profile, low to medium acidity, with some oak notes, but less than expected. No heat despite 15% alcohol. What hurt the score was a mid palate thinness that I do not expect at this price point. I prefer the 07 regular Justin cab to this wine at less than half the price.

Made from a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot this is deep garnet colour in the glass. On the nose - intense baked plums, blackcurrant and a hint of leather. Ripe red cherry, plum, and red licorice on a bright and redolent nose. The wine is also very bright on the palate, as the fruit is ripe, even plump, with sweet red cherry and plum flavors balanced by ripe tannins on a finish that is long and surprisingly tannic, and buffered by wood that imparts a milk chocolate flavor on the backend. While this perhaps lacks the roundness and richness of a top Napa cabernet, perhaps the Insignia, which is very similiar in style, this is outstanding for its balance. This is young, and I think it needs perhaps a couple years to round out.

Made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot this wine is aged in oak for 18 months. Deep purple in colour I found blackcurrant, blackberry and cherry characters on the nose. Not impressed. A lot of fruit ( Welchs Grape Juice)as others have said maybe its just not ready yet. Frankly I don't think this will get any better. As far QPR goes there is a lot of better wines out there at a much lower price point. I would not by any more Justin based on this experience.

From a 375ml bottle. Right out of the bottle. Great nose of slightly stewed black cherry, blueberry and vanilla. Supple but lengthy slightly mouth drying tannins. The fruit is vibrant. An impressive bordeaux blend. Smooth and structured at the same time. I'd like to revisit in a few years.
The Justin Isosceles is a wine to seek out. Still young but consistently interesting and unique. 91+Pts

Decanted, but for only an hour, and this needed more time than that. Within that time, however, the alcohol blew off a bit and some of the potential came through. Notes of liquorice & black fruit aromas. Round in the mouth with very dry & slightly dusty finish. Paired really well with grilled rib-eyes. This needs more time in the cellar IMO.

Let me preface this by saying don't open this yet!!! Echoing what others have said, it is not nearly ready. All the makings of a great wine are there - a knockout nose of ripe red fruits...a LOT of tannin/struture, but the fruit is obscuring itself right now...harsh finish. Did I mention we triple-decanted this? And still without much progress. Let this wine sleep for at least a few more years and you'll be rewarded.

Purchased from tiny liquor store in Garretsville, OH. Unfortunately the bottle was cooked. The cork showed the tell tale signs of excessive heat. The liquor shop must have either not stored it properly or received it in the heat of the summer. What a shame. I learned my lesson. Don't buy good wines from marginal stores.

Just way too tight and tannic right now. Almost off putting. Decanted at the restaurant with hopes that it would breathe, but didnt move much during the course of the meal. As is, the nose was very tight. Palate consisted of a punch of sour cherries and mouth gripping tannins. Towards the end of the meal, got slight hints of milk chocolate, but not much fruit. I would sit on this for at least 2 years.

very dark opaque purple. Opened and sampled and thought it was to tannic to drink. Decanted for about and hour which allowed a little fruit to show but was woulnd tight for the rest of the night. I am not sure this would open into anything spectacular either. Felt a bit hollow

I think that they over-oaked this one. Compared to the 94 or 95, it had more of a california style as opposed to a true Bordeaux effort. That being said, massive dark fruit flavors emerged and paired quite nicely with a heart beef stew.

Justin Winery has been at the forefront of Cabernet Sauvignon production in Paso Robles for over two decades. Their extraordinary wines not only highlight the unique volcanic soils and warm climate of Paso Robles, but have proven that Bordeaux Style varieties can strive in the precipitously challenged California Central Coast. Isosceles, Justin’s Bordeaux Style blend is the benchmark for excellence in the region. Brash aromatics of macerated blackberry, blueberry, and overripe raspberry bring forth intensely integrated spiced cedar framed by dampened earth and wet worn leather. Opaque as black ink in the glass, the wine carries its own sense of gravity to the bottom of the stem that unfurls hedonistic dark fruit and concentrated eucalyptus leaf. Sweet black licorice rounds out a bottomless finish of ashen mineral, tobacco, and coffee ground.

Popped and poured at a restaurant. At first the wine showed tart red fruit with a bit of coffee...not much else. As the meal continued the wine took on a milk chocolate component that was a bit overbearing. It was like eating a chocolate covered cherries with my Strip Steak. I won't repeat.

The nose has a lovely cigar box feel to it, with lots of black fruit, the blackcurrant showing more on the nose with some aeration. Soft and open palate. This is very balanced with quite nice ripe flavours, but without being jammy. There’s nice structure, but you don’t really notice the tannins till the finish and after.

Notes from memory - drunk at last night's poker game. This bottle had recently been shipped, and also had a lengthy car ride, so travel shock is likely. Also so recently bottled, I'd take a serious grain of salt with this. Loads of bright red and purple fruits, solid acidity which is just a bit overbearing but likely will settle with time. Not alot of complexity at this point. Seems like once it has a chance to settle down, it should be quite nice, although I'm not sure it'll be one of the best years. Only time will tell. 88 for how it's drinking now, but will definitely notch up a bit with some time.

Justin should be proud of his accomplishments in these wines.

Color: Dark crimson bordering on inky.

Score B/B+
